Abstract

The optical radiometric calibration method based on correlated photons generated by spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) is a promising method, because it is based on the basic physical phenomena and does not need radiometric traceability. At the present, the SPDC calibration technology is applicable for the photon-counting detector with a highest calibration accuracy of 0.18%.More and more researchers are making effort to improve its calibration accuracy and expand its applicable targets to analog detectors.Correlated photon circles have the high photon rate characteristic. The photon rates of signal and idle light can be improved significantly by using correlated photon circles in calibration. It has very important significance to study the time-correlation characteristic of correlated photon circles. In this paper, the spatial distribution of emission angle of the broadband (450-1000 nm) correlated photons generated by type-I spontaneous parametric down-conversion is presented through the theoretical calculations. The ZEMAX optical software is used to design the optical system which can receive the broadband correlated photon circles and remove the pump laser which is the main source of stray light. The 355 nm wavelength laser is used to pump -barium borate (BBO) crystal to generate the broadband correlated photon circles.A low-light-level CMOS camera is used to adjust and align the opt-mechanical system. Finally, the 430 nm-860 nm correlated photon circles are received by the optical system and detected by the low-light-level CMOS camera. An experimental measurement system is established to measure the time-correlation characteristics of 685 nm and 736.89 nm correlated photon circles.Using 1.0 mW continuous-wave laser to pump BBO crystal,a coincidence peak is observed evidently. The results show that the correlated photon circles generated by type-I SPDC have the characteristics of time-correlation and high photon rates. It can be conductive to improving optical radiometric calibration accuracy based on correlated photons and promoting the development and application in analog detector calibration.

[Research on the Distribution of Broad-Band Correlated Photon Spectra and the Measurement of Time-Correlation].

The correlated photon technique makes it possible to achieve a radiation calibration processing without chain transferring. The study of the spectral radiation character and time correlation of the photon is of great significance for broad-band radiometric calibration. To absolutely calibrate quantum efficiency of photoelectric detector, it is necessary to extend calibration band from single band to more bands. According to the phase-matching condition of the spontaneous parametric down-conversion, non-collinear angle formula of correlated photon in the crystal is derived. The distribution of the photon spectrum is simulated. Meanwhile, the phase-matching angle of the crystal is optimized. The photon generated by the spontaneous parameters down-conversion has a broad spectral distribution and the correlated photon wavelength is corresponding to its emission angle. Based on the result of the simulation, the experimental measurement system of the spectral distribution and time-correlation of the correlated photon is established. The spectral distribution, the time-correlation and the polarization properties of the four pair photon were measured by using this system. The experimental results show that, (1) the spectral distribution of the measurements is 633~808 nm, where the maximum spectral distribution measurement bias is 1.51 mm. The experiment result is highly consistent with theoretical ones; (2) the correlation time of four pairs correlated photon is measured, during which “three coincidence-peaks” is observed and the minimum correlation time was 0.32 ns; (3) single photon count rate along with coincidence count rate of correlated photon vary with the polarization direction of the pump as sine function. The experimental result is shown that the correlated photon pairs are ranging from the visible to near infrared band distribution, and that the spectrum has time-correlation and polarization characteristic. The research result is firstly reported at home and abroad, and the results are promising for the application of the photoelectric detector in the multi-band radiometric calibration.

Research in absolute calibration of single photon detectors by means of correlated photons

Yu Feng, Xiaobing Zheng, Jianjun Li +1 more

There are two general methods in radiometric calibration of detectors, one is based on radiation sources and the other based on detectors. Because the two methods need to establish a primary standard of high precision and a transfer chain, precision of the standard will be reduced by extension of the chain. A new calibration method of detectors can be realized by using correlated photons generated in spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) effect of nonlinear crystal, without needing transfer chain. Using 351.1-nm output of a tunable laser to pump 'beta'-barium borate (BBO) crystal, an absolute calibration experimental system of single photon detectors based on correlated photons is performed. The quantum efficiency of photomultiplier (PMT) at 702.2 nm is measured by the setup. Advantages of this method over traditional methods are also pointed out by comparison.

A new calibration method of detectors can be realized by using correlated photons generated in spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) effect of nonlinear crystal. An absolute calibration system of detector quantum efficiency is performed. And its principle and experimental setup are introduced.A continuouswave (CW) ultraviolet (351 nm), diode-pumped, frequency-doubled, and solid-state laser is used to pump BBO crystal. The quantum efficiencies of the photomultiplier at 633, 702, and 789 nm are measured respectively. The coincidence peaks are observed using coincidence circuit. Some measurement factors including the filter bandwidth of trigger channel, the detector position alignment and polarization of the pump light are analyzed. The uncertainties of this calibration method are also analyzed, and the relative uncertainties of total calibration are less than 5.8%.The accuracy of this method could be improved in the future.

Characterizing a 474 nm Laser as a Source for Spontaneous Parametric Down Conversion

J. A. Balmer, L.C. Howard

There is an important class of experiments that characterize the properties of quantum mechanical systems using correlated photons, and a typical source for correlated photons is the process of Spontaneous Parametric Down Conversion (SPDC). SPDC is a quantum mechanical process in which a single “pump” photon is converted into two photons that have half the frequency and double the wavelength of the original photon. This process takes place inside a crystal with particular optical properties that allow for SPDC, and we used a uniaxial Beta Barium Borate crystal. A single photon counting module (SPCM) was used as a detector for the photons. Our goal was to characterize a 474 nanometer (nm) Diode Pumped Solid State (DPSS) laser as a possible source for SPDC correlated photons. Measurements of the DPSS laser radiation showed that it emitted photons with a wavelength of both 474 nm and 948 nm, which was expected. The SPDC photons produced by our apparatus would also have a wavelength of 948 nm, so we tested whether the down converted photons could be detected without the 948 nm signal from the DPSS laser overwhelming the SPCM. Software for determining the parameters of SPDC in a given system is available from the National Institute of Standards and Technology, and we used it to determine where we could expect to see SPDC photons. Initial measurements suggest that the system can produce SPDC photons, and we will continue to characterize the apparatus.

The frequency correlation (or decorrelation) of photon pairs is of great importance in long-range quantum communications and photonic quantum computing. We experimentally characterize a spontaneous parametric down conversion (SPDC) source, based on a β-Barium Borate (BBO) crystal cut for type-II phase matching at 1550 nm which has the capability to emit photons with positive or no spectral correlations. Our system, depicted in Fig. 1a), employs a carefully designed detection method exploiting two InGaAs detectors.
