Optical phase conjugation for time-domain undoing of dispersive self-phase-modulation effects

Robert A. Fisher, B. R. Suydam, David O. Yevick

We show that the temporal distortion and spectral broadening of a pulse generated by the combined effects of group-velocity dispersion and self-phase modulation is removed by reflection of a cw-pumped, broadband, unityreflecting Kerr-like optical phase conjugator followed by retraversal of the nonlinear medium. We also examinenumerically the effects of finite linear loss in the material, of nonunity conjugate reflectivity, and of finite conjugator thickness.

Phase-conjugate resonator dynamics

Ari T. Friberg, Martti Olavi Kauranen, Rainer Salomaa

Optical phase conjugation has in recent years attracted a considerable amount of interest. A whole host of devices will soon be constructed that are based on phase-conjugating components. Of particular interest is a phase-conjugate resonator that may be used to investigate phenomena such as bistability1 and chaos.2 It also serves as a convenient Instrument for verifying some theorems on phase-conjugate scattering.3

Phase conjugation of nonstationary optical signals

J. A. Tataronis, Bahaa E. A. Saleh

The generation of phase conjugated replicas of optical signals has been the subject of many theoretical and experimental studies. Phase conjugation of harmonic signals is a byproduct of certain nonlinear processes such as degenerate four- wave mixing and stimulated Brillouin scattering. Although conjugation of steady signals is well established, the possibility and the effectiveness of conjugating unsteady signals remain largely unexplored. When the envelope of an optical signal varies, new physical phenomena in the conjugation process arise. As previously shown,1 dispersion in the conjugation process distorts the phase conjugate replica of a pulsed signal. Distortion appears even if the response of the medium to the applied optical signal is instantaneous.
