Pure Goldstone mode in the quench dynamics of a confined ultracold Fermi gas in the BCS-BEC crossover regime

P. Kettmann, S. Hannibal, Mihail D Croitoru +2 more

We present a numerical study of the dynamic response of a confined superfluid Fermi gas to a rapid change of the scattering length (i.e., an interaction quench). Based on a fully microscopic time-dependent density-matrix approach within the full Bogoliubov--de Gennes formalism that includes a 3D harmonic confinement we simulate and identify the emergence of a Goldstone mode of the BCS gap in a cigar-shaped $^{6}\mathrm{Li}$ gas. By analyzing this Goldstone mode over a wide range of parameters, we show that its excitation spectrum is gapless and that its main frequency is not fixed by the trapping potential but that it is determined by the details of the quench. Thus we report the emergence of a pure Goldstone mode of the BCS gap that---in contrast to situations in many previous studies---maintains its gapless excitation spectrum predicted by the Goldstone theorem. Furthermore, we observe that the size-dependent superfluid resonances resulting from the atypical BCS-BEC crossover have a direct impact on this Goldstone mode. Finally, we find that the interaction quench-induced Goldstone mode leads to a low-frequency in-phase oscillation of the single-particle occupations with complete inversion of the lowest-lying single-particle states which could provide a convenient experimental access to the pure gapless Goldstone mode.

Highly anisotropic collective modes of altermagnetic superconductors with Bogoliubov Fermi surfaces

Huaisong Zhao, Peng Zou, Xia-Ji Liu +1 more

We investigate collective modes in charge-neutral altermagnetic superconductors with $d$-wave spin-split bands, focusing on the impact of emergent Bogoliubov Fermi surfaces. In the absence of a magnetic field, the BCS state supports collective modes that inherit the underlying $d$-wave symmetry, resulting in pronounced momentum-space anisotropy. The broken time-reversal symmetry further couples these modes to spin-density fluctuations, allowing their signatures to emerge in the spin dynamical structure factor. Upon applying a magnetic field, Bogoliubov Fermi surfaces emerge and qualitatively reshape the collective-mode dynamics through gapless particle-hole excitations and strongly anisotropic Landau damping. The damping is strongest along the momentum-space diagonal, where it can suppress the low-energy phonon mode at small momenta. Remarkably, the suppressed phonon is accompanied by the emergence of an in-gap structure in the Higgs mode and an associated pronounced enhancement of the spin response. These results establish Bogoliubov Fermi surfaces as a mechanism for generating highly anisotropic collective-mode dynamics and identify spin response as a sensitive probe of in-gap Higgs excitations in altermagnetic superconductors.

Damping of Long-Wavelength Collective Modes in Spinor Bose-Fermi Mixtures

J. H. Pixley, Xiaopeng Li, S. Das Sarma

Using an effective field theory we describe the low energy bosonic excitations in a three-dimensional ultracold mixture of spin-1 bosons and spin-1/2 fermions. We establish an interesting fermionic excitation induced generic damping of the usual undamped long-wavelength bosonic collective Goldstone modes. Two states with bosons forming either a ferromagnetic or polar superfluid are studied. The linear dispersion of the bosonic Bogoliubov excitations is preserved with a renormalized sound velocity. For the polar superfluid we find both gapless modes (density and spin) are damped, whereas in the ferromagnetic superfluid we find the density (spin) mode is (not) damped. We find that this holds for any mixture of bosons and fermions that are coupled through at least a density-density interaction. In addition, we predict the existence of the Kohn anomaly in the bosonic excitation spectrum of Bose-Fermi mixtures. We discuss the implications of our many-body interaction results for experiments on Bose-Fermi mixtures.

Based on a fully microscopic time-dependent density-matrix approach within the full Bogoliubov--de Gennes formalism that includes a 3D harmonic confinement we simulate and identify the emergence of a Goldstone mode of the BCS gap in a cigar-shaped 6Li^{6}\mathrm{Li}6Li gas. By analyzing this Goldstone mode over a wide range of parameters, we show that its excitation spectrum is gapless and that its main frequency is not fixed by the trapping potential but that it is determined by the details of the quench.
