One-dimensional spin-orbit coupling Bose gases with harmonic trapping

Abstract

Rabi model is a popular model in quantum optics and describes a two-level system coupling to a quantum resonator. The fruitful physics appears when the coupling strength is comparable to the frequency of the resonator. We investigate the Bose gases of Raman induced spin-orbit coupling with an external harmonic trapping. Using the displacement Fock state in quantum optics we seek for an approximate ground state. We find the superposition state of left and right displaced oscillator state with odd parity has lower energy than the displaced state itself. Besides, we study the time evolution of both the momentum and the position of the system at single particle level to demonstrate the Zitterbewegung oscillating characteristics, which present an intuitive physical picture and are in qualitative agreement with the relevant experimental results. The results are useful to study the Rabi model in deep-strong coupling regime, the model that is difficult to realize in today’s experiment based on the high controllability property of laser, and these results are also instructive for the cold atom physics field.

Novel Spin-orbit Coupling in Cold Atoms

Chuanzhou Zhu

In cold atom, the coupling between "spin" (atomic internal hyperfine states) and "orbit" (atomic center-of-mass motion) can be induced by Raman transition, where different hyperfine states are coupled by a pair of Raman lasers. In recent years, this synthetic spin-orbit coupling has received tremendous attention, as it leads to a variety of novel quantum phenomena in precisely controllable cold atom systems. In this thesis, we first present a comprehensive analysis of one-, two- and many- particle physics of harmonically trapped atoms with spin-orbit coupling, followed by the study of "novel spin-orbit coupling" in two different systems: (1) cold atom spinor mixtures and (2) cold atoms in an optical cavity. In the first system, we consider a spinor mixture consisting of two species of cold atoms, where the spin-orbit coupling can be transmitted from one species to the other, and we discuss novel topological properties and the supersolid stripe phase in this mixture. In the second system, we consider the coupling among three parts: the cavity photon field, the atomic internal hyperfine states, and the atomic external center-of-mass motion, and we discuss how this coupling affects familiar quantum optical phenomena, such as Rabi oscillation and Dicke superradiance phase transition. Our novel systems contribute new and practical platforms for the research field of synthetic spin-orbit coupling in cold atoms.

Properties of Bose gases with the Raman-induced spin–orbit coupling

Wei Zheng, Zeng-Qiang Yu, Xiaoling Cui +1 more

In this paper we investigate the properties of Bose gases with Raman-induced spin-orbit(SO) coupling. It is found that the SO coupling can greatly modify the single particle density-of-state, and thus lead to non-monotonic behavior of the condensate depletion, the Lee-Huang-Yang correction of ground-state energy and the transition temperature of a non-interacting Bose-Einstein condensate. The presence of the SO coupling also breaks the Galilean invariance, and this gives two different critical velocities, corresponding to the movement of the condensate and the impurity respectively. Finally, we show that with SO coupling, the interactions modify the BEC transition temperature even at Hartree-Fock level, in contrast to the ordinary Bose gas without SO coupling. All results presented here can be directly verified in the current cold atom experiments using Raman laser-induced gauge field.

Quantum Rabi dynamics of trapped atoms far in the deep strong coupling regime

Johannes Koch, Geram R. Hunanyan, Till Ockenfels +3 more

The coupling of a two-level system with an electromagnetic field, whose fully quantized version is the quantum Rabi model, is among the central topics of quantum physics. When the coupling strength becomes large enough that the field mode frequency is reached, the deep strong coupling regime is approached, and excitations can be created from the vacuum. Here we demonstrate a periodic variant of the quantum Rabi model in which the two-level system is encoded in the Bloch band structure of cold rubidium atoms in optical potentials. With this method we achieve a Rabi coupling strength of 6.5 times the field mode frequency, which is far in the deep strong coupling regime, and observe a subcycle timescale raise in bosonic field mode excitations. In a measurement recorded in the basis of the coupling term of the quantum Rabi Hamiltonian, a freezing of dynamics is revealed for small frequency splittings of the two-level system, as expected when the coupling term dominates over all other energy scales, and a revival for larger splittings. Our work demonstrates a route to realize quantum-engineering applications in yet unexplored parameter regimes.

Periodic quantum Rabi model with cold atoms at deep strong coupling

Geram R. Hunanyan, Johannes Koch, Stefanie Moll +3 more

The quantum Rabi model describes the coupling of a two-state system to a bosonic field mode. Recent theoretical work has pointed out that a generalized periodic version of this model, which maps onto Hamiltonians applicable in superconducting qubit settings, can be quantum simulated with cold trapped atoms. Here, we experimentally demonstrate atomic dynamics predicted by the periodic quantum Rabi model far in the deep strong-coupling regime. The two-state system is represented by two Bloch bands of cold atoms in an optical lattice, and the bosonic mode by oscillations in a superimposed optical dipole trap potential. The observed dynamics beyond the usual quantum Rabi physics becomes relevant when the edge of the Brillouin zone is reached, and evidence for collapse and revival of the initial state is revealed at extreme coupling conditions. Mapping trapped atomic gas with spin-orbit coupling to quantum Rabi-like model

Haiping Hu, Shu Chen

We construct a connection of the ultracold atomic system in a harmonic trap with Raman-induced spin-orbit coupling to the quantum Rabi-like model. By mapping the trapped atomic system to a Rabi-like model, we can get the exact solution of the Rabi-like model following the methods to solve the quantum Rabi model. The existence of such a mapping implies that we can study the basic model in quantum optics by using trapped atomic gases with spin-orbit coupling.

Zitterbewegungeffect in spin-orbit-coupled spin-1 ultracold atoms

Yi‐Cai Zhang, Shu-Wei Song, Chaofei Liu +1 more

The Zitterbewegung effect in spin-orbit-coupled spin-1 cold atoms is investigated in the presence of the Zeeman field and a harmonic trap. It is shown that the Zeeman field and the harmonic trap have significant effect on the Zitterbewegung oscillatory behaviors. The external Zeeman field could suppress or enhance the Zitterbewegung amplitude and change the frequencies of oscillation. A much slowly damping Zitterbewegung oscillation can be achieved by adjusting both the linear and the quadratic Zeeman fields. Multifrequency Zitterbewegung oscillation can be induced by the applied Zeeman field. In the presence of the harmonic trap, the subpackets corresponding to different eigenenergies would always keep coherent, resulting in the persistent Zitterbewegung oscillations. The Zitterbewegung oscillation would display very complicated and irregular oscillation characteristics due to the coexistence of different frequencies of the Zitterbewegung oscillation. Furthermore, numerical results show that the Zitterbewegung effect is robust even in the presence of interaction between atoms.
