Abstract

A wideband tuning of parametric four-wave mixing generation in a liquid-filled photonic crystal fiber is theoretically demonstrated, and influence of its temperature is investigated. The broadband spectrum is generated via a supercontinuum generation process induced by degenerate four-wave mixing (DFWM), for which the thermo-optic coefficient of the oil (the refractive index matching fluid) is considered. The signal band tuning from 734 nm to 923 nm, and the idler band from 1931 nm to 1255 nm, are observed when the temperature increases from 30°C to 90°C. The findings can be applied in many fields, such as CARS.

Modeling spectral correlations of photon-pairs generated in liquid-filled photonic crystal fibers

Lorena Velázquez-Ibarra, Antonio Diez, Enrique Silvestre +2 more

Abstract The generation of photon-pairs with controllable spectral correlations is crucial in quantum photonics. Here we present the design of a photonic crystal fiber to generate widely-spaced four-wave mixing bands with spectral correlations that can be tuned through the thermo-optic effect after being infiltrated with heavy water. We present a theoretical study of the purity of the signal and idler photons generated as a function of temperature, pump spectral linewidth and the length of the fiber.

Jie Su, Liang Cui, Xiaoying Li

By adjusting the central wavelength of pump, we generate wavelength tunable photon pairs via spontaneous four wave mixing in a photonics crystal fiber. The tuning range of the signal/idler photons is from 1310/757 nm to 1610/880 nm.

Wavelength Tunable Source of Correlated Photon Pairs Based on Photonic Crystal Fiber

Jie Su, Liang Cui, Xiaoying Li

Quantum-correlated photon pairs with tunable wavelength are highly desirable in a number of quantum technologies. In this letter, we demonstrate a wavelength tunable source of the correlated photon pairs based on pulse-pumped spontaneous four-wave mixing in photonic-crystal fiber. The wavelengths of the correlated signal and idler photons can be continuously tuned at room temperature by adjusting the wavelength of pump originating from an ytterbium-doped fiber laser. The tuning range of the idler photons is 757-880 nm and the range of the signal photons is 1310-1610 nm, which covers the 1310- and 1550-nm telecom bands.

All-Fiber Broadband Photon Pair Generation in Dispersion Flattened Highly Non-Linear Fibers

Anadi Agnihotri, Pradeep Kumar Krishnamurthy

We demonstrate an all-fiber broadband photon pair source based on four wave mixing (FWM) process in dispersion flattened highly non-linear fiber (DF-HNLF). The fiber exhibits a zero dispersion slope near 1550 nm, allowing phase-matched FWM over entire S, C, and L bands and thus efficient generation of signal and idler photons. A comparative theoretical study between conventional dispersion-shifted fiber (DSF) and DF-HNLF highlights the spectral range differences in the generation of photon pairs. We measure coincidence counts at three different sets of wavelengths. To study the effects of Raman scattering, which acts as noise source in these types of fibers, we calculate the correlation$g^{(2)}(\tau)$at different pump powers. We use stimulated emission tomography to characterize the generation of photon pairs across the S, C, and L bands. We show that DF-HNLF is an ideal medium for generating correlated photons over a broad spectral range ($>\!\!100\,\text{nm}$), making it suitable for frequency-multiplexed quantum communication systems. We estimate the photon pair generation efficiency to be 0.05$\text{mW}^{-2}/\text{pulse}$.

Spectral properties of photon pairs generated by spontaneous four-wave mixing in inhomogeneous photonic crystal fibers

Liang Cui, Xiaoying Li, Ningbo Zhao

The photonic crystal fiber (PCF) is one of the excellent media for generating photon pairs via spontaneous four-wave mixing. Here we study how the inhomogeneity of PCFs affect the spectral properties of photon pairs from both the theoretical and experimental aspects. The theoretical model shows that the photon pairs born in different places of the inhomogeneous PCF are coherently superposed, and a modulation in the broadened spectrum of phase-matching function will appear, which prevents the realization of spectral factorable photon pairs. In particular, the inhomogeneity induced modulation can be examined by measuring the spectrum of the individual signal or idler field when the asymmetric group-velocity matching condition is approximately fulfilled. Our experiments are performed by tailoring the spectrum of pulsed pump to satisfy the specified phase-matching condition. The observed spectra of individual signal photons, which are produced from different segments of the 1.9 m inhomogeneous PCF, agree with the theoretical predictions. The investigations are not only useful for fiber-based quantum state engineering, but also provide a dependable method to test the homogeneity of PCF.

Wavelength shift of four-wave mixing bands in photonic crystal fibers pumped in the normal dispersion regime

Lorena Velázquez-Ibarra, Antonio Diez, Enrique Silvestre +4 more

The generation of correlated photon pairs plays a central role in several quantum mechanics applications, such as quantum information, and cryptography. Correlated photon pairs can be generated inside an optical fiber through the parametric process of degenerated four-wave mixing (FWM). In this paper the authors report the results of two different experiments where wavelength shift of FWM bands in normal dispersive PCFs is investigated.
