Abstract

Abstract A target whispering-gallery-mode microresonator (WGMM) directly coupled to a waveguide with an auxiliary side-coupled WGMM is proposed to deterministically extract both the resonant and non-resonant single incident photons from a waveguide. Based on the single-photon Raman interaction (SPRINT) between an Λ-type three-level atom and the target WGMM, a full quantum theory in real space is adopted to calculate the extraction efficiencies at the single-photon level. The results show that the extraction efficiencies can be significantly improved by appropriately tuning the frequencies of the auxiliary WGMM and the coupling strength between the two WGMMs, even when the atom and WGMMs have dissipations. Since mode redistribution is only externally imposed on the auxiliary WGMM, the population and phase of the atom are not directly affected. The nonlocal control, which ensures that the SPRINT takes place, results in high extraction efficiencies. We also find that the transmission probabilities of both the resonant and non-resonant incident photons can be controlled in a range from 0 to 100%, so that the proposed double-WGMM system has the potential to be used as a single-photon switch.

Fully quantum-mechanical analytic results for single-photon transport in a single-mode waveguide coupled to a whispering-gallery resonator interacting with a two-level atom

Jung‐Tsung Shen, Shanhui Fan

We analyze the single-photon transport in a single-mode waveguide coupled to a whispering-gallery-type resonator interacting with a two-level atom. The single-photon transport properties such as the transmission and reflection amplitudes, as well as the resonator and the atom responses, are solved exactly via a real-space approach. The treatment includes the inter-mode backscattering between the two degenerate whispering gallery modes of the resonator, and the dissipations of the resonator and the atom. We also show that a generalized critical coupling condition, that the single-photon transmission at the output of the waveguide goes to zero on resonance for a matched system, holds for the full coupled waveguide-ring resonator-atom system.

Single-Photon Transport Properties in Coupled-Resonator Waveguide with Nonlocal Coupling to a Whispering-Gallery Resonator Interacting with Two Separated Atoms

Tao Zhou, Xiaofei Zang, Jing Chen

We investigate the single-photon transport properties in a one-dimensional coupled-resonator waveguide non-locally coupled to a whispering-gallery resonator embedded with two separated two-level atoms based on the real-space approach. The control of single-photon transport is realized by modulating the detuning between two separated atoms, phase differences, and the symmetric/asymmetric nonlocal couplings. The multi-frequency photon-filter is obtained, and the influences of dissipation effects on single-photon transmission spectra and the phase shift are also discussed.

We investigate theoretically the single-photon scattering by a Λ-type three-level system interacting with a whispering-gallery-type resonator which is coupled to a one-dimensional waveguide by full quantum-mechanical approach. The single-photon transmission amplitude and reflection amplitude are obtained exactly via real-space approach. The single-photon transport properties controlling by classic optical field are discussed. The critical coupling condition in the coupled waveguide-whispering-gallery resonator-atom with three-level system is also analyzed.

Single-photon routing with whispering-gallery resonators

J. C. Huang, Jiahao Zhang, L. F. Wei

Abstract Quantum routing of single photons in a system with two waveguides coupled to two whispering-gallery resonators (WGRs) are investigated theoretically. Using a real-space full quantum theory, photonic scattering amplitudes along four ports of the waveguide network are analytically obtained. It is shown that, by adjusting the geometric and physical parameters of the two-WGR configuration, the quantum routing properties of single photons along the present waveguide network can be controlled effectively. The routing capability from input waveguide to another one can significantly exceed 0.5 near the resonance point of scattering spectra, which can be achieved with only one resonator. By properly designing the distance between two WGRs and the waveguide-WGR coupling strengths, the transfer rate between the waveguides can also reach certain sufficiently high values even in the non-resonance regime. Moreover, Fano-like resonances in the scattering spectra are designable. The proposed system may provide a potential application in controlling single-photon quantum routing.

Single-photon transport properties in a one-dimensional resonator waveguide coupled to a whispering-gallery resonator

Xiaofei Zang, Chun Jiang

We study single-photon transport properties in an array of coupled microcavities, coupled to a whispering-gallery-type resonator interacting with a two-level atom. The transmission and reflection coefficients for the single photon propagating in such a coupled system are deduced. We show that the coherent transport properties of the single photon can be well controlled by the intermode backscattering, the resonator–atom coupling and the detuning between the whispering-gallery resonator and the atom. In addition, the influence of the dissipation of the whispering-gallery resonator and the two-level atoms for the realistic physical system on the transport properties are also analysed.
