Abstract

We study the distortions in the dispersion and absorption spectra that arise when rotating wave approximation (RWA) is applied to multilevel atomic system driven by a polychromatic field. The density matrix equations are solved numerically without applying the RWA and when using it. The obtained polarization spectra are compared with each other in terms of maximum and frequency-averaged deviations.

One step beyond the RWA: a way to obtain precise polarization spectra without having to consider high-frequency density matrix fluctuations

The method to improve the traditional rotating wave approximation in solving density matrix equation is proposed. We use the additional transformation to obtain more close approach to an exact solution than the usual rotating wave approximation. The proposed method is illustrated by the example of a two-level system driven by a polychromatic field.

Polarization spectra of a two-level system in a polychromatic field were obtained in two cases: using the rotating wave approximation and without using this approximation. The obtained spectra were compared using two indicators: the average deviation across the entire frequency range and the deviation at the transition frequency. Both indicators allow quantitative assessment of the distortion in polarization spectra introduced by the application of the rotating wave approximation. The dependencies of the above indicators on key model parameters were obtained – on the central frequency, detuning, and spectral width of the applied polychromatic field. The obtained dependencies allow evaluating the applicability limits of the rotating wave approximation for a given level of acceptable distortions in the polarization spectrum.

Nonlinear interaction between a two-level atom and a weak polychromatic field

A. G. Antipov, S. A. Pulkin, Svetlana Uvarova

The interaction between two-level media and a polychromatic field is considered in the limit of small field amplitudes. The obtained third-order corrections allow us to describe a nonlinear response to the field and intermodal interaction. The obtained polarization spectra are compared to numerical solutions to the density matrix equation in the rotating wave approximation. The results can be used in nonlinear comb spectroscopy.

Polarization spectrum of three-level atoms in weak polychromatic fields

Differential density matrix equations for a three-level atomic system driven by polychromatic fields are solved numerically. The polarization spectrum of the probe field is obtained. Ultra-narrow resonances in the polarization spectrum on the probe field frequency emerge at multiple harmonics and subharmonics.

an interaction of two-level media with a symmetric polychromatic field is considered in the limit of small field amplitudes. Corrections of the third order and above allow us to describe a nonlinear response to the field and a multimodal interaction. The obtained absorption spectra were compared with numerical solutions of density matrix equation in the rotating wave approximation.

Absorption spectra of two-level atoms interacting with a strong polychromatic pump field and an arbitrarily intense probe field

Tai Hyun Yoon, Myung Sai Chung, Hai-Woong Lee

A numerical method is introduced that solves the optical Bloch equations describing a two-level atom interacting with a strong polychromatic pump field with an equidistant spectrum and an arbitrarily intense monochromatic probe field. The method involves a transformation of the optical Bloch equations into a system of equations with time-independent coefficients at steady state via double harmonic expansion of the density-matrix elements, which is then solved by the method of matrix inversion. The solutions so obtained lead immediately to the determination of the polarization of the atomic medium and of the absorption and dispersion spectra. The method is applied to the case when the pump field is bichromatic and trichromatic, and the physical interpretation of the numerically computed spectra is given.
