Abstract

Rydberg dressing provides optically controllable interactions between neutral atoms, of interest for generating many-body entanglement. We demonstrate these interactions and emulate transverse-field Ising dynamics in a cold gas of cesium atoms.

Transverse-Field Ising Dynamics in a Rydberg-Dressed Atomic Gas

Victoria Borish, Ognjen Marković, Jacob Hines +2 more

We report on the realization of long-range Ising interactions in a cold gas of cesium atoms by Rydberg dressing. The interactions are enhanced by coupling to Rydberg states in the vicinity of a Förster resonance. We characterize the interactions by measuring the mean-field shift of the clock transition via Ramsey spectroscopy, observing one-axis twisting dynamics. We furthermore emulate a transverse-field Ising model by periodic application of a microwave field and detect dynamical signatures of the paramagnetic-ferromagnetic phase transition. Our results highlight the power of optical addressing for achieving local and dynamical control of interactions, enabling prospects ranging from investigating Floquet quantum criticality to producing tunable-range spin squeezing.

Quantum simulation of transverse Ising models with Rydberg atoms

Peter Schauß

Abstract Quantum Ising models are canonical models for the study of quantum phase transitions (Sachdev 1999 Quantum Phase Transitions (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press)) and are the underlying concept for many analogue quantum computing and quantum annealing ideas (Tanaka et al Quantum Spin Glasses, Annealing and Computation (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press)). Here we focus on the implementation of finite-range interacting Ising spin models, which are barely tractable numerically. Recent experiments with cold atoms have reached the interaction-dominated regime in quantum Ising magnets via optical coupling of trapped neutral atoms to Rydberg states. This approach allows for the tunability of all relevant terms in an Ising spin Hamiltonian with 1 / r 6 interactions in transverse and longitudinal fields. This review summarizes the recent progress of these implementations in Rydberg lattices with site-resolved detection. Strong correlations in quantum Ising models have been observed in several experiments, starting from a single excitation in the superatom regime up to the point of crystallization. The rapid progress in this field makes spin systems based on Rydberg atoms a promising platform for quantum simulation because of the unmatched flexibility and strength of interactions combined with high control and good isolation from the environment.

Simulating magnetic fields in Rydberg-dressed neutral atoms

Xiaofeng Shi, T. A. B. Kennedy

A Rydberg interaction that can effectively exchange the states of two atoms may be used to transfer the optical phase of laser fields to the atomic pair wave function. A similar phase mapping may occur for many neutral atoms in a two-dimensional lattice when subjected to off-resonant optical Rydberg dressing fields, simulating the effect of a magnetic field. This all-optical method of simultaneously simulating magnetic fields and strong two-body interaction may have application to the study of quantum magnetism and topological physics.

A Platform of Rydberg-Dressed Cesium Atoms for Quantum Control Applications.

Grant W. Biedermann

We demonstrate a Rydberg-dressed ground-state blockade that provides a strong tunable interaction energy (~1 MHz in units of Planck's constant) between spins of individually trapped cesium atoms. With this interaction we directly produce Bell-state entanglement between two atoms with a fidelity ≥ 81(2)%, excluding atom loss events, and ≥ 60(3)% when loss is included [arXiv].Our method is based on a new technique that produces a blockade of Rydberg-dressed ground states. This approach allows single-step, direct entanglement of long-lived ground (clock) states in our cesium atoms. The on-demand interaction we employ-Rydberg-dressed ground states-is a long sought after fundamental capability for numerous proposals spanning from new phases of matter in ultracold quantum gases to spin-squeezed metrology in clocks and quantum computation protocols. We not only clearly measure this elusive Rydberg-dressed interaction, but also employ it to demonstrate high fidelity Bell-state generation. The entanglement generation differs from previous work in a fundamental way; the probability remains entirely in the Rydberg-dressed ground state, freeing the approach from the experimental burden of coherently exciting optical transitions to and from the Rydberg states. In principle Rydberg-dressed atoms are more insensitive to various decoherence mechanisms and lead to a better quantum control fidelity [Keating PRA].In addition, the interaction we demonstrate is nearly 4 orders of magnitude larger than that produced in the typical experiment based on ultra cold collisions.

Analog Quantum Simulation via Rydberg Dressing

Arinjoy De, Majd Hamdan, Milan Kornjača +1 more

Analog quantum simulations with Rydberg atoms in optical tweezers have emerged as a powerful tool for exploring strongly correlated many-body physics. However, the range of accessible phenomena remains limited by constraints in controlling many-body interactions in these systems. Here, we propose an alternative approach to realizing tunable interactions using Rydberg dressing on Aquila, a 256-atom quantum simulator based on optical tweezer arrays. By weakly admixing a Rydberg state via off-resonant laser coupling, we generate long-range interactions with temporal control. In combination with programmable atom geometries and site-selective control, this dressing protocol enables simulation of quantum spin models with state preparation and measurement in arbitrary basis. These capabilities enable access to exciting regimes of quantum simulation, including Quantum spin liquids, XYZ lattice models and broader application of quantum reservoir computing. Our approach establish Rydberg dressing as a practical and scalable tool for expanding the class of many-body systems accessible to analog quantum simulation and provides a critical stepping stone toward quantum machine learning and hybrid analog-digital quantum simulation with neutral atoms.
