We explore the evolution of an ultracold quantum gas of interacting fermions crossing from a Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) superfluidity to a Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of molecular bosons in the presence of a tunable-range interaction among the fermions and of an artificial magnetic field, which can be used to simulate a pseudo-spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and to produce topological states. We find that the crossover is affected by a competition between the finite range of the interaction and the SOC and that the threshold for the topological transition is affected by the interactions only in the small pair size, BEC-like, regime. Below , we find persistence of universal behavior in the critical temperature, chemical potential, and condensate fraction, provided that the pair correlation length is used as a driving parameter. Above threshold, universality is lost in the regime of large pair sizes. Here, the limiting ground state departs from a weakly interacting BCS-like one so that a different description is required. Our results can be relevant in view of current experiments with cold atoms in optical cavities, where tunable-range effective atomic interactions can be engineered.
We investigate the non-universal behavior of the BCS-BEC crossover model at the normal to superfluid transition. By using a finite temperature quantum field theoretical approach due to Nozieres and Schmitt-Rink and by making the effective range expansion of the effective two-body interaction we numerically calculate the crossover transition temperature as a function of the scattering length,
aF, and the effective range parameter,
re. In an ultracold two-component atomic Fermi gas BCS-BEC crossover physics is expected to appear near magnetic-field-induced Feshbach resonances. By matching two-body scattering properties near a Feshbach resonance to a simple renormalized model potential, a broad resonance is characterized by a small effective range and the gas displays a universal BCS-BEC crossover behavior. On the other hand, for a narrow resonance thermodynamic quantities depend the effective range which may be large and negative at resonance. For increasing values of
−re we find the transition temperature to be suppressed in the crossover region. We furthermore argue for existence of a lower bound of
Tc at fixed coupling for increasing
−re in the crossover region.
We study the virial relations for ultracold trapped two component Fermi gases in the case of short finite range interactions. Numerical verifications for such relations are reported through the BCS-BEC crossover. As an intermediate step, it is necessary to evaluate the partial derivatives of the many body energy with respect to the inverse of the scattering length and with respect to the interaction range. They are found to have extreme values at the unitary limit. The virial results are used to check the quality of the variational wave function involved in the calculations.
