Abstract

We present a mathematical derivation of some of the most important physical quantities arising in topological bilayer systems with permutation twist defects as introduced by Barkeshli et al. (Phys Rev B 87:045130_1-23, 2013). A crucial tool is the theory of permutation equivariant modular functors developed by Barmeier et al. (Int Math Res Notices 2010:3067–3100, 2010; Transform Groups 16:287–337, 2011).

Point-like topological defects in bilayer quantum Hall systems

Gerardo Cristofano, Vincenzo Marotta, Adele Naddeo +1 more

Following a suggestion given in Cristofano et al (2003 Phys. Lett. B 571 250; 2004 Nucl. Phys. B 679 621), we show how a bilayer quantum Hall system at fillings ν = m /( pm + 2) can exhibit a point-like topological defect in its edge state structure. Indeed our CFT theory for such a system, the Twisted Model (TM), gives rise in a natural way to such a feature in the twisted sector. Our results are in agreement with recent experimental findings of Deviatov et al (2005 Phys. Rev. B 72 041305) which evidence the presence of a topological defect in the bilayer system.

Fusion rules for permutation extensions of modular tensor categories

Colleen Delaney

We give a construction and algorithmic description of the fusion ring of permutation extensions of an arbitrary modular tensor category using a combinatorial approach inspired by the physics of anyons and symmetry defects in bosonic topological phases of matter. The definition is illustrated with examples, namely bilayer symmetry defects and $S_3$-extensions of small modular tensor categories like the Ising and Fibonacci theories. An implementation of the fusion algorithm is provided in the form of a Mathematica package. We introduce the notions of confinement and deconfinement of anyons and defects, respectively, which develop the tools to generalize our approach to more general fusion rings of $G$-crossed extensions.

Braiding statistics and congruent invariance of twist defects in bosonic bilayer fractional quantum Hall states

Jeffrey C. Y. Teo, Abhishek Roy, Xiao Chen

We describe the braiding statistics of topological twist defects in fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states. In particular, we study Abelian bosonic $(mmn)$ FQH states with bilayer symmetries. Twist defects are staircases that lift orbiting quasiparticles from one layer to another. These point defects exhibit semiclassical non-Abelian characteristics. We develop a procedure to evaluate consistent basis transformations ($F$ symbols) of the defect fusion theory. Unlike quantum anyonic excitations of a topological phase, the exchange and braiding statistics of twist defects is not characterized by modular transformations, but instead a subcollection known as congruent transformations. We also characterize the projective nature of unitary braiding operations and relate it to the global ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ bilayer symmetry.
