Abstract

We predict edge defects induced by spin-spin interaction in a paradigmatic Heisenberg spin chain. Such defects proportional to interaction can trap one magnon and magnon pair which are termed as one-magnon edge state and bound-magnon edge states, respectively. Besides, there are modulation-induced defects by introducing a time-periodic tunneling. The interplay between the two types of defects allows us to switch one of the defects and manipulate the interaction-induced bound-magnon edge state into the continuum this http URL the high-frequency regime, we analytically derive an effective model by a multiscale perturbation analysis to interpret the corresponding physical mechanisms for edge physics. Our work makes an important progress in understanding the edge physics of spin chains which has been overlooked for a long time, but also offers a new route to control the quantum dynamics of magnons.

Edge states in quantum spin chains: The interplay among interaction, gradient magnetic field, and Floquet engineering

Wenjie Liu, Bo Zhu, Li Zhang +2 more

We explore the edge defects induced by spin-spin interaction in a finite paradigmatic Heisenberg spin chain. By introducing a gradient magnetic field and a periodically modulated spin-exchange strength, the resonance between modulation frequency and magnetic-field gradient can also induce asymmetric defects at the edges, dubbed as Floquet-Wannier-Zeeman edge defects. The interplay between these two types of edge defects allows us to manipulate the magnon edge states from an isolated band into a continuum one. In the high-frequency regime, we analytically derive effective models to interpret the formation mechanisms for edge states by employing the multiscale perturbation analysis. Our study offers insights to understand and control the magnon edge states governed by the interplay between edge defects induced by the spin-spin interaction and the Floquet-Wannier-Zeeman manipulation.

Modulation-induced long-range magnon bound states in one-dimensional optical lattices

Wenjie Liu, Yongguan Ke, Bo Zhu +1 more

Abstract Magnon excitations play an important role in understanding quantum magnetism and magnon bound states observed with ultracold atoms in optical lattices. Here, we investigate how gradient magnetic field and periodically modulated spin-exchange strength affect the two-magnon excitations. In the Stark resonance where the driving frequency matches and smooths the potential bias, the system gains translational invariance in both space and time in the rotating frame, and thus we can develop a Floquet–Bloch band theory for two magnons. We find a new kind of bound states with relative distance no less than two sites, apart from the conventional bound states with relative distance at one site, which indicates the modulation-induced long-range interaction. We analytically derive an effective Hamiltonian via the many-body perturbation theory for a deeper understanding of such novel bound states and explore the interplay between these two types of bound states. Moreover, we propose to probe modulation-induced bound states via quantum walks. Our study not only provides a scheme to form long-range magnon bound states, but also lays a cornerstone for engineering exotic quantum states in multi-particle Floquet systems.

Magnon-polaron formation in XXZ quantum Heisenberg chains

D. Morais, F. A. B. F. de Moura, Wandearley S. Dias

We study the formation of magnon-polaron excitations and the consequences of different timescales between the magnon and lattice dynamics. The spin-spin interactions along the one-dimensional lattice are ruled by a Heisenberg Hamiltonian in the anisotropic form XXZ, in which each spin exhibits a vibrational degree of freedom around its equilibrium position. By considering a magnetoelastic coupling as a linear function of the relative displacement between nearest-neighbor spins, results provide an original framework for achieving a hybridized magnon-polaron state. Such a state is characterized by high cooperation between the underlying excitations, where nondispersive profiles of the magnon wave function and the lattice deformations exhibit a bound dynamics. Traveling or stationary formation of a magnon-polaron depends on the effective magnetoelastic coupling, and the critical amount $({\ensuremath{\chi}}_{c})$ separating both regimes is shown. Different characteristic timescales of the magnon and the vibrational dynamics unveiled the threshold between such behaviors, as well as a limit value of critical magnetoelastic interaction, above which the magnon velocity no longer interferes at the critical magnetoelastic coupling capable of inducing the stationary regime.

Long-lived $\pi$ edge modes of interacting and disorder-free Floquet spin chains

Daniel J. Yates, Alexander G. Abanov, Aditi Mitra

Floquet spin chains have been a venue for understanding topological states of matter that are qualitatively different from their static counterparts by, for example, hosting $\pi$ edge modes that show stable period-doubled dynamics. However the stability of these edge modes to interactions has traditionally required the system to be many-body localized in order to suppress heating. In contrast, here we show that even in the absence of disorder, and in the presence of bulk heating, $\pi$ edge modes are long lived. Their lifetime is extracted from exact diagonalization and is found to be non-perturbative in the interaction strength. A tunneling estimate for the lifetime is obtained by mapping the stroboscopic time-evolution to dynamics of a single particle in Krylov subspace. In this subspace, the $\pi$ edge mode manifests as the quasi-stable edge mode of an inhomogeneous Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model whose dimerization vanishes in the bulk of the Krylov chain.

Spin squeezing in open Heisenberg spin chains

Tanausú Hernández Yanes, Giedrius Žlabys, Marcin Płodzień +4 more

Spin squeezing protocols successfully generate entangled many-body quantum states, the key pillars of the second quantum revolution. In our recent work [Phys. Rev. Lett. 129, 090403 (2022)] we showed that spin squeezing described by the one-axis twisting model can be generated in the Heisenberg spin-$1/2$ chain with periodic boundary conditions when accompanied by a position-dependent spin-flip coupling induced by a single laser field. In this work, we show analytically that the change in boundary conditions from the periodic to the open ones significantly modifies spin squeezing dynamics. A broad family of twisting models can be simulated by the system in the weak-coupling regime, including one- and two-axis twisting under specific conditions, providing the Heisenberg level of squeezing and acceleration of the dynamics. Our analytical findings are confirmed by full numerical simulations.
