Symmetry Breaking Boundary States and Defect Lines

Abstract

We present a large and universal class of new boundary states which break part of the chiral symmetry in the underlying bulk theory. Our formulas are based on coset constructions and they can be regarded as a non-abelian generalization of the ideas that were used by Maldacena, Moore and Seiberg to build new boundary states for SU(N). We apply our expressions to construct defect lines joining two conformal field theories with possibly different central charge. Such defects can occur e.g. in the AdS/CFT correspondence when branes extend to the boundary of the AdS-space.

Weyl anomalies of four dimensional conformal boundaries and defects

Adam Chalabi, Christopher P. Herzog, Andy O’Bannon +2 more

Abstract Motivated by questions about quantum information and classification of quantum field theories, we consider Conformal Field Theories (CFTs) in spacetime dimension d ≥ 5 with a conformally-invariant spatial boundary (BCFTs) or 4-dimensional conformal defect (DCFTs). We determine the boundary or defect contribution to the Weyl anomaly using the standard algorithm, which includes imposing Wess-Zumino consistency and fixing finite counterterms. These boundary/defect contributions are built from the intrinsic and extrinsic curvatures, as well as the pullback of the ambient CFT’s Weyl tensor. For a co-dimension one boundary or defect (i.e. d = 5), we reproduce the 9 parity-even terms found by Astaneh and Solodukhin, and we discover 3 parity-odd terms. For larger co-dimension, we find 23 parity-even terms and 6 parity-odd terms. The coefficient of each term defines a “central charge” that characterizes the BCFT or DCFT. We show how several of the parity-even central charges enter physical observables, namely the displacement operator two-point function, the stress-tensor one-point function, and the universal part of the entanglement entropy. We compute several parity-even central charges in tractable examples: monodromy and conical defects of free, massless scalars and Dirac fermions in d = 6; probe branes in Anti-de Sitter (AdS) space dual to defects in CFTs with d ≥ 6; and Takayanagi’s AdS/BCFT with d = 5. We demonstrate that several of our examples obey the boundary/defect a-theorem, as expected.

Cardy states, defect lines and chiral operators of coset CFTs on the lattice

Laurens Lootens, Robijn Vanhove, Frank Verstraete

We construct Cardy states, defect lines and chiral operators for rational coset conformal field theories on the lattice. The bulk theory is obtained by taking the overlap between tensor network representations of different string-nets, while the primary fields emerge from using the topological superselection sectors of the anyons in the original topological theory. This mapping provides an explicit manifestation of the equivalence between conformal field theories in two dimensions and topological field theories in three dimensions: their groundstates and elementary excitations are represented by exactly the same tensors.

Defect Conformal Field Theory from Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev Interactions

Yang Ge, Shao-Kai Jian

The coupling between defects and extended critical degrees of freedom gives rise to the intriguing theory known as defect conformal field theory (CFT). In this work, we introduce a novel family of boundary and interface CFTs by coupling N Majorana chains with SYK_{q} interactions at the defect. Our analysis reveals that the interaction with q=2 constitutes a new marginal defect. Employing a versatile saddle-point method, we compute unique entanglement characterizations, including the g function and effective central charge, of the defect CFT. Furthermore, we analytically evaluate the transmission coefficient using CFT techniques. Surprisingly, the transmission coefficient deviates from the universal relation with the effective central charge across the defect at the large N limit, suggesting that our defect CFT extends beyond all known examples of Gaussian defect CFT.

Entropy of conformal perturbation defects

Defect Lines in the Ising Model and Boundary States on Orbifolds

Masaki Oshikawa, Ian K. Affleck

Critical phenomena in the two-dimensional Ising model with a defect line are studied using boundary conformal field theory on the $c\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}1$ orbifold. Novel features of the boundary states arising from the orbifold structure, including continuously varying boundary critical exponents, are elucidated. New features of the Ising defect problem are obtained including a novel universality class of defect lines and the universal boundary to bulk crossover of the spin correlation function.
