Abstract

Recently, longitudinal acoustic phonons have been identified as the main source of the intensity damping observed in Rabi rotation measurements of the ground-state exciton of a single InAs/GaAs quantum dot. Here we report experiments of intensity damped Rabi rotations in the case of detuned laser pulses. The results have implications for the coherent optical control of both excitons and spins using detuned laser pulses. (C) 2011 American Institute of Physics. [doi :10.1063/1.3577963]

Damping of Exciton Rabi Rotations by Acoustic Phonons in Optically Excited InGaAs/GaAs Quantum Dots

We report experimental evidence identifying acoustic phonons as the principal source of the excitation-induced-dephasing (EID) responsible for the intensity damping of quantum dot excitonic Rabi rotations. The rate of EID is extracted from temperature dependent Rabi rotation measurements of the ground-state excitonic transition, and is found to be in close quantitative agreement with an acoustic-phonon model.

Intensity damping of Rabi-oscillations and renormalization of the Rabi frequency in InGaAs/GaAs quantum dots

The source of intensity damping of Rabi-oscillations in quantum dots has long been in question. Here we identify acoustic phonons as the principal source of dephasing and demonstrate the re-normalization of the Rabi-frequency.

Phonon-Induced Rabi-Frequency Renormalization of Optically Driven Single InGaAs/GaAs Quantum Dots

A. J. Ramsay, Timothy M. Godden, S. J. Boyle +5 more

We study optically driven Rabi rotations of a quantum dot exciton transition between 5 and 50 K, and for pulse areas of up to 14π. In a high driving field regime, the decay of the Rabi rotations is nonmonotonic, and the period decreases with pulse area and increases with temperature. By comparing the experiments to a weak-coupling model of the exciton-phonon interaction, we demonstrate that the observed renormalization of the Rabi frequency is induced by fluctuations in the bath of longitudinal acoustic phonons, an effect that is a phonon analogy of the Lamb shift.

Exploring coherence of individual excitons in InAs quantum dots embedded in natural photonic defects: Influence of the excitation intensity

Daniel Wigger, Quentin Mermillod, Tomasz Jakubczyk +9 more

The exact optical response of quantum few-level systems depends crucially on the exact choice of the incoming pulse areas. We use four-wave mixing (FWM) spectroscopy to infer the coherent response and dynamics of single InAs quantum dots (QDs) and study their pulse area dependence. By combining atomic force microscopy with FWM hyperspectral imaging, we show that the retrieved FWM signals originate from individual QDs enclosed in natural photonic defects. The optimized light-matter coupling in these defects allows us to perform our studies in a wide range of driving field amplitudes. When varying the pulse areas of the exciting laser pulses, Rabi rotations of microscopic interband coherences can be resolved by the two-pulse FWM technique. We investigate these Rabi coherence rotations within two- and three-level systems, both theoretically and experimentally, and explain their damping by the coupling to acoustic phonons. To highlight the importance of the pulse area influence, we show that the phonon-induced dephasing of QD excitons depends on the pulse intensity.
