Deterministic Quantum State Transformations

Abstract

We derive a necessary condition for the existence of a completely-positive, linear, trace-preserving map which deterministically transforms one finite set of pure quantum states into another. This condition is also sufficient for linearly-independent initial states. We also examine the issue of quantum coherence, that is, when such operations maintain the purity of superpositions. If, in any deterministic transformation from one linearly-independent set to another, even a single, complete superposition of the initial states maintains its purity, the initial and final states are related by a unitary transformation.

Quantum State Transformations, Majorization and Distinguishability

Anthony Chefles

We give a unified treatment of quantum operations which transform one set of pure states into a another pure set. Extremal cases are deterministic transformations, which have unit success probability, and unambiguous state discrimination, which reveals the state and has the lowest success probability for a fixed initial ensemble. We obtain necessary and, for linearly independent initial states, sufficient conditions for the realisability of a given transformation with a fixed probability of success for each state. We then examine the relationship between deterministic transformations, majorization and distinguishability.

Physical transformations between quantum states

Zejun Huang, Chi-Kwong Li, Edward Poon +1 more

Given two sets of quantum states {A1, …, Ak} and {B1, …, Bk}, represented as sets as density matrices, necessary and sufficient conditions are obtained for the existence of a physical transformation T, represented as a trace-preserving completely positive map, such that T(Ai) = Bi for i = 1, …, k. General completely positive maps without the trace-preserving requirement, and unital completely positive maps transforming the states are also considered.

Transformations of superpositions by means of incoherent operations

Marcelo Losada, G. M. Bosyk, Héctor Freytes +1 more

In this paper we study how the coherence of a superposition of pure states is related with the coherence of its components. We consider two pure initial states and two pure final coherent states, such that the former ones cannot be transformed into the latter ones by means of incoherent transformations. In this situation, we analyze conditions for the existence of superpositions of the initial states that can be transformed into superpositions of the final states. In particular, we consider superpositions formed by quantum states belonging to orthogonal subspaces. By appealing to the majorization theory, we obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for such transformations to be possible. Finally, we provide some examples that illustrate the difference between the obtained conditions and the necessary criterion based on the relative entropy of coherence.

Catalytic coherence transformations

Kaifeng Bu, Uttam Singh, Junde Wu

Catalytic coherence transformations allow the otherwise impossible state transformations using only incoherent operations with the aid of an auxiliary system with finite coherence that is not being consumed in any way. Here we find the necessary and sufficient conditions for the deterministic and stochastic catalytic coherence transformations between a pair of pure quantum states. In particular, we show that the simultaneous decrease of a family of R\'enyi entropies of the diagonal parts of the states under consideration is a necessary and sufficient condition for the deterministic catalytic coherence transformations. Similarly, for stochastic catalytic coherence transformations we find the necessary and sufficient conditions for achieving a higher optimal probability of conversion. We thus completely characterize the coherence transformations among pure quantum states under incoherent operations. We give numerous examples to elaborate our results. We also explore the possibility of the same system acting as a catalyst for itself and find that indeed self-catalysis is possible. Further, for the cases where no catalytic coherence transformation is possible we provide entanglement-assisted coherence transformations and find the necessary and sufficient conditions for such transformations.

On the Origin of Linearity and Unitarity in Quantum Theory

Matt Wilson, Nick Ormrod

We reconstruct the transformations of quantum theory using a physically motivated postulate. This postulate states that transformations should be locally applicable, and recovers the linear isometries from pure quantum theory, as well as the completely positive, trace-preserving maps from mixed quantum theory. Notably, in the pure case, linearity with respect to the superposition rule and reversibility are both derived from this locality principle.

Entanglement transformation between sets of bipartite pure quantum states using local operations

H. F. Chau, Chi‐Hang Fred Fung, Chi-Kwong Li +2 more

Alice and Bob are given an unknown initial state chosen from a set of pure quantum states. Their task is to transform the initial state to a corresponding final pure state using local operations only. We prove necessary and sufficient conditions on the existence of such a transformation. We also provide efficient algorithms that can quickly rule out the possibility of transforming a set of initial states to a set of final states.
