Two-photon interaction between trapped ions and cavity fields

Abstract

In this paper, we generalize the ordinary two-photon Jaynes-Cummings model (TPJCM) by considering the atom (or ion) to be trapped in a simple harmonic well. A typical setup would be an optical cavity containing a single ion in a Paul trap. Due to the inclusion of atomic vibrational motion, the atom-field coupling becomes highly nonlinear what brings out quite different behaviors for the system dynamics when compared to the ordinary TPJCM. In particular, we derive an effective two-photon Hamiltonian with dependence on the number operator of the ion's center-of-mass motion. This dependence occurs both in the cavity induced Stark-shifs and in the ion-field coupling, and its role in the dynamics is illustrated by showing the time evolution of the probability of occupation of the electronic levels for simple initial preparations of the state of the system.

Jaynes-Cummings Model Dynamics in Two Trapped Ions

Hao‐Sheng Zeng, Le‐Man Kuang, Kelin Gao

We showed that in Lamb-Dicke regime and under rotating wave approximation, the dynamical behavior of two trapped ions interacting with a laser beam resonant to the first red side-band of center-of-mass mode can be described by Jaynes-Cummings Model. An exact analytic solution for this kind of Jaynes-Cummings model is presented. The results showed that quantum collapses and revivals for the occupation of two atoms, and squeezing for vibratic motion of center-of-mass mode existed in both two different types of initial conditions. The maximum momentum squeezing for center-of-mass mode in these two types of conditions are found to be 42.4% and 43.8% respectively. The coherence, in the first type of initial conditions can keeps long times, and in the second type of initial conditions, a concrete form of coherent state is obtained, when the initial average number is very small.

Quantum behavior of a two-level atom interacting with two modes of light in a cavity

Shih-Chuan Gou

A generalized Jaynes-Cummings model is investigated where the transition is mediated by two different modes of photons. For different types (uncorrelated and correlated) of field states, the dynamical behavior of the generalized Jaynes-Cummings model exhibits very different aspects. With the high-Q limit, the effects of cavity damping in the presence of correlated field states are also considered.

Experiments in cavity QED and with trapped ions

Christopher C. Gerry, P. L. Knight

In this chapter, we discuss two more experimental realizations of quantum optical phenomena, namely the interaction of an effective two-level atom with a quantized electromagnetic field in a high Q microwave cavity, the subject usually referred to as cavity QED, or sometimes CQED, and in the quantized motion of a trapped ion. Strictly speaking, these experiments are not optical, but they do realize interactions of exactly the type that are of interest in quantum optics, namely the Jaynes–Cummings interaction between a two-level system (an atom) and a bosonic degree of freedom, a single-mode cavity field in the case of a microwave cavity, and a vibrational mode of the center-of-mass motion of a trapped ion, the quanta being phonons in this case. We shall begin with a description of the useful properties of the so-called Rydberg atoms that are used in the microwave CQED experiments, proceed to discuss some general considerations of the radiative behavior of atoms in cavities, the CQED realization of the Jaynes–Cummings model, and then discuss the use of the dispersive, highly off-resonant, version of the model to generate superpositions of coherent states, i.e. the Schrödinger cat states of the type discussed in Chapters 7 and 9 for traveling wave optical fields but this time for a microwave cavity field. Finally, we discuss the realization of the Jaynes–Cummings interaction in the vibrational motion of a trapped ion.

Generalized Jaynes-Cummings models with a time-dependent atom-field coupling

Amitabh Joshi, S. V. Lawande

An extension of the standard one-photon as well as the two-photon Jaynes-Cummings (JC) model has been done to include transient effects due to a modulation of the atom-field coupling coefficient. An explicit time dependence is given for the case of a linear sweep of the coupling parameter. We have shown the effects of such a sweep on the dynamical evolution of a two-level atom undergoing a one- or two-photon process in a single nondecaying mode of the field in a coherent state. The statistical aspects of the field, such as intensity-intensity correlation and squeezing, are also investigated and are found to be both qualitatively as well as quantitatively different from the standard JC models.

Coupled dynamics of an atom and an optomechanical cavity

X. X. Yi, Hongchang Sun, L. C. Wang

We consider the motion of the end mirror of a cavity inside which a two-level atom trapped. The fast vibrating mirror induces nonlinear couplings between the cavity field and the atom. We analyze this optical effect by showing the population of the atom in its internal degrees of freedom as a function of time. On the other side, fast atom-field variables result in an additional potential for the atomic center-of-mass motion and the mirror vibration, leading to entanglement in the motion and the vibration. The entanglement has been numerically simulated and discussed.

Influence of Squeezing Effects on Nonlinear of a Trapped Ion

Starting from the Jaynes-Cummings(J-C) model describing the interaction of a trapped ion with a standing wave laser field,we derive the interaction Hamiltonian on the nonlinear J-C model of the trapped ion excited resonantly with single quantum vibrational mode. After solving the time dependent states of this model,we study the ion centroid motion of squeezing effects by utilizing the ion numerical model. It is shown that the ion squeezing effects is related with the Lamb-Dicke parameter and the position of the ion in the standing wave laser field.
