Abstract

We study the properties of the double-frequency sine–Gordon model in the vicinity of the Ising quantum phase transition displayed by this model. Using a mapping onto a generalised lattice quantum Ashkin-Teller model, we obtain critical and nearly-off-critical correlation functions of various operators. We discuss applications of the double-sine-Gordon model to one-dimensional physical systems, like spin chains in a staggered external field and interacting electrons in a staggered potential. Correlation functions of one-dimensional quantum systems

Thierry Giamarchi, Heinz J. Schulz

A number of one-dimensional quantum systems like interacting fermions or spin chains can be described in terms of a generalized quantum sine-Gordon Hamiltonian. The transfer-matrix formulation of critical two-dimensional models also frequently leads to sine-Gordon Hamiltonians. We compute here the different correlation functions of such a model using a real-space renormalization technique. Our renormalization calculation gives us the exponents of the correlation functions as well as the corrections to the usual power-law behavior due to marginally irrelevant operators. Except on the critical line, where logarithmic corrections exist at all length scales, the correlation functions decay like power laws, with amplitude corrections from the marginal operators. The logarithmic corrections always appear at short length scale. The complete crossover between the two behaviors is given by our equations. The implication of our calculation for physical systems like the one-dimensional electron gas, quantum spin chains, and two-dimensional statistical systems is discussed.

The Ising Transition in the double-frequency sine-Gordon model

Ye, Fei, Guo-Hui Ding, Bo-Wei Xu

In the present paper we utilize the renormalization group(RG) technique to analyse the Ising critical behavior in the double frequency sine-Gordon model. The one-loop RG equations obtained show unambiguously that there exist two Ising critical points besides the trivial Gaussian fixed point. The topology of the RG flows is obtained as well.

Tensor network study of deconfined quantum criticality in a one-dimensional spin-phonon model

Anton Romen, Josef Willsher, David Hofmeier +2 more

Deconfined quantum critical points (DQCPs) describe continuous transitions between ordered phases beyond the Landau paradigm. A simple example is the Néel antiferromagnet (AFM) to valence bond solid (VBS) transition in a 1D antiferromagnetic $J_1-J_2$ model. In analogy to the spin-Peierls instability of critical spin chains, DQCPs are predicted to be unstable towards lattice distortions below a critical phonon frequency. In this work, we use tensor network simulations to investigate this instability in the antiferromagnetic $J_1-J_2$ model coupled to lattice vibrations. We confirm the stability of DQCP for large phonon frequencies and demonstrate that the transition turns strongly first-order below a critical frequency. The instability is caused by a reduction of the Luttinger parameter due to spin-phonon interactions and we identify the effective theory of the behavior as the double sine-Gordon model. The same effective theory is known to describe the classical Ashkin-Teller model, which enables us to show that the critical endpoint is in the four-state Potts universality class. We argue based on non-linear bosonization that the sign of the double-frequency term is fixed, which provides a microscopic justification for the first-order transition. Furthermore, we provide quantitative numerical scaling results for the phonon spectral function, offering an experimental signature to probe DQCP-phonon coupling in low-dimensional materials.

Critical behavior of the quantum double-sine-Gordon model

S. De Martino, Silvio De Siena, Pasquale Sodano

We investigate the critical behavior of systems modeled by the quantum double-sine-Gordon theory. We find the existence of a Kosterlitz-Thouless transition in a region of the phase space. For different ranges of the physical parameters, the model is shown to be equivalent to a free massive Dirac field.
