Giant enhancement of quantum decoherence by frustrated environments

Abstract

This Letter studies the decoherence in a system of two antiferromagnetically coupled spins that interact with a spin bath environment. Systems are considered that range from the rotationally invariant to highly anisotropic spin models, have different topologies and values of parameters that are fixed or are allowed to fluctuate randomly. We explore the conditions under which the two-spin system clearly shows an evolution from the initial spin-up - spin-down state towards the maximally entangled singlet state. We demonstrate that frustration and, especially, glassiness of the spin environment strongly enhances the decoherence of the two-spin system.

Evolution of a quantum spin system to its ground state: Role of entanglement and interaction symmetry

Shengjun Yuan, Mikhail I. Katsnelson, Hans A. De Raedt

We study the decoherence of two ferro- and antiferromagnetically coupled spins that interact with a frustrated spin-bath environment in its ground state. The conditions under which the two-spin system relaxes from the initial spin-up--spin-down state toward its ground state are determined. It is shown that the two-spin system relaxes to its ground state for narrow ranges of the model parameters only. It is demonstrated that the symmetry of the coupling between the two-spin system and the environment has an important effect on the relaxation process. In particular, we show that, if this coupling conserves the magnetization, the two-spin system readily relaxes to its ground state, whereas a nonconserving coupling prevents the two-spin system from coming close to its ground state.

Decoherence by a spin thermal bath: Role of spin-spin interactions and initial state of the bath

Shengjun Yuan, Mikhail I. Katsnelson, Hans A. De Raedt

We study the decoherence of two coupled spins that interact with a spin-bath environment. It is shown that the connectivity and the coupling strength between the spins in the environment are of crucial importance for the decoherence of the central system. For the anisotropic spin bath, changing the connectivity or coupling strength changes the decoherence of the central system from Gaussian to exponential decay law. The initial state of the environment is shown to affect the decoherence process in a qualitatively significant manner.

Enhanced decoherence in the vicinity of a phase transition

S. Camalet

We study the decoherence of a spin-1/2 induced by an environment which is on the verge of a continuous phase transition. We consider spin environments described by the ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic Heisenberg models on a square lattice. As is well known, these two dimensional systems undergo a continuous phase transition at zero temperature, where, the spins order spontaneously. For weak coupling of the central spin to these baths, we find that as one approaches the transition temperature, critical fluctuations make the central spin decohere faster. Furthermore, the decoherence is maximal at zero temperature as signalled by the divergence of the Markovian decoherence rate.

Weak-coupling study of decoherence of a qubit in disordered magnetic environments

Emilio A. Winograd, Marcelo J. Rozenberg, R. Chitra

We study the decoherence of a qubit weakly coupled to frustrated spin baths. We focus on spin baths described by the classical Ising spin glass and the quantum random transverse Ising model which are known to have complex thermodynamic phase diagrams as a function of an external magnetic field and temperature. Using a combination of numerical and analytical methods, we show that for baths initially in thermal equilibrium, the resulting decoherence is highly sensitive to the nature of the coupling to the environment and is qualitatively different in different parts of the phase diagram. We find an unexpected strong non-Markovian decay of the coherence when the random transverse Ising model bath is prepared in an initial state characterized by a finite temperature paramagnet. This is contrary to the usual case of exponential decay (Markovian) expected for spin baths in finite temperature paramagnetic phases, thereby illustrating the importance of the underlying nontrivial dynamics of interacting quantum spinbaths.
