Local field distributions in spin glasses

Abstract

Abstract. Numerical results for the local field distributions of a family of Ising spinglass models are presented. In particular, the Edwards-Anderson model in dimensions two, three, and four is considered, as well as spin glasses with long-range powerlaw-modulated interactions that interpolate between a nearest-neighbour Edwards-Anderson system in one dimension and the infinite-range Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model. Remarkably, the local field distributions only depend weakly on the range of the interactions and the dimensionality, and show strong similarities except for near zero local field. Numerical study of the dynamics of some long range spin glass models

Alain H. Billoire

We present results of a Monte Carlo study of the equilibrium dynamics of the one dimensional long-range Ising spin glass model. By tuning a parameter , this model interpolates between the mean field Sherrington–Kirkpatrick model and a proxy of the finite dimensional Edward-Anderson model. Activated scaling fits for the behavior of the relaxation time as a function of the number of spins N (Namely ) give values of that are not stable against inclusion of subleading corrections. Critical scaling ( ) gives more stable fits, at least in the non mean field region. We also present results on the scaling of the time decay of the critical remanent magnetization of the Sherrington–Kirkpatrick model, a case where the simulation can be done with quite large systems and that shows the difficulties in obtaining precise values for dynamical exponents in spin glass models.

Analytic and computational studies of spin glasses

The Sherrington-Kirkpatrick and the nearest-neighbour X-Y spin-glass models are studied. The effect of a small uniform symmetry breaking field on the infinite-ranged Sherrington-Kirkpatrick Ising spin-glass model is discussed. It is shown that the off-diagonal contributions to the fluctuation-dissipation formula vanish for a symmetric distribution of interactions and the limit of zero field. This contradicts the result of Young and Kirkpatrick based on numerical evidence for small samples. The dynamics of the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick spin-glass are investigated.Below the critical temperature this model exhibits non-ergodic behaviour.Consequently, in order to obtain timedependent correlation functions it is necessary to average over the initial states with a Boltzmann weight. This necessitates the use of "replicas".It is shown that in Parisi's scheme the "dynamical" Edwards-Anderson order parameter is given by q(x =1), whereas the statistical mechanics order parameter is given by r 1 q(x)dx.The result for the statistical mechanics order parameter j 0 implies that there is no violation of the fluctuation-dissipation theorem once an average over samples is performed. It is also shown that the system in general keeps its memory of the initial state for all time. However, this memory is "lost" if one makes a replica symmetric ansatz for the order parameters. This illus trates the connection between replica symmetry breaking and nonergodicity. The nearest neighbour X-Y spin-glass in both two-and threedimensions is investigated by Monte Carlo simulation. In two--11ln[ln Xcn + 1-42] versus In T SG } X2 (Tq ) for T (3D) 4.11 4.12a 4.12b 4.12c 4.13a ' 4.13b > Plots of the data for T (3D) 4.13c 4.14a 4.14b 4.15a 4.15b Plots of £ ^ for 3D SG A plot of the data for £ assuming that LCD = 3 SG A plot of the data for £ assuming that LCD = 3 SG and p__ = 1.2 SG A5.1a A5.

Low-temperature behavior of the statistics of the overlap distribution in Ising spin-glass models

Matthew Wittmann, Burcu Yücesoy, Helmut G. Katzgraber +2 more

Using Monte Carlo simulations, we study in detail the overlap distribution for individual samples for several spin-glass models including the infinite-range Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model, short-range Edwards-Anderson models in three and four space dimensions, and one-dimensional long-range models with diluted power-law interactions. We study three long-range models with different powers as follows: The first is approximately equivalent to a short-range model in three dimensions, the second to a short-range model in four dimensions, and the third to a short-range model in the mean-field regime. We study an observable proposed earlier by some of us which aims to distinguish the ``replica symmetry breaking'' picture of the spin-glass phase from the ``droplet picture,'' finding that larger system sizes would be needed to unambiguously determine which of these pictures describes the low-temperature state of spin glasses best, except for the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model, which is unambiguously described by replica symmetry breaking. Finally, we also study the median integrated overlap probability distribution and a typical overlap distribution, finding that these observables are not particularly helpful in distinguishing the replica symmetry breaking and the droplet pictures.

Finite-size scaling analysis of the distributions of pseudo-critical temperatures in spin glasses

Alain H. Billoire, L. A. Fernández, A. Maiorano +3 more

Using the results of large scale numerical simulations we study the probability distribution of the pseudo-critical temperature for the three-dimensional Edwards–Anderson Ising spin glass and for the fully connected Sherrington–Kirkpatrick model. We find that the behaviour of our data is nicely described by straightforward finite-size scaling relations.

Numerical simulations on spin glasses (invited)

A. P. Young

We discuss the results of numerical simulations of two spin-glass models, the infinite range Sherrington–Kirkpatrick (SK) model, and a nearest–neighbor model in three dimensions. The probability distribution PN(q) for the spin glass order parameter q has been evaluated for the SK model below Tc with N, the number of spins, up to 192. It shows the same basic features as the Parisi function dx/dq as expected, but with sizeable finite size corrections. Results for the short-range model show evidence for a finite temperature transition but further work is needed to confirm this.

Distribution of metastable states of Ising spin glasses

Stefan Schnabel, Wolfhard Janke E

Local minima, also known as inherent structures, are expected to play an essential role in the behavior of spin glasses. Here, we propose techniques to efficiently sample these configurations in Monte Carlo simulations. For the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick and the three-dimensional Edwards-Anderson model their spectra are determined and compared to analytical results.
