Loop symmetry of integrable vertex models at roots of unity

Abstract

It has been recently discovered in the context of the six vertex or XXZ model in the fundamental representation that new symmetries arise when the anisotropy parameter $(q+q^{-1})/2$ is evaluated at roots of unity $q^{N}=1$. These new symmetries have been linked to an $U(A^{(1)}_1)$ invariance of the transfer matrix and the corresponding spin-chain Hamiltonian. In this paper these results are generalized for odd primitive roots of unity to all vertex models associated with trigonometric solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation by invoking representation independent methods which only take the algebraic structure of the underlying quantum groups $U_q(\\hat g)$ into account. Here $\\hat g$ is an arbitrary Kac-Moody algebra. Employing the notion of the boost operator it is then found that the Hamiltonian and the transfer matrix of the integrable model are invariant under the action of $U(\\hat{g})$. For the simplest case $\\hat g=A_1^{(1)}$ the discussion is also extended to even primitive roots of unity.

Auxiliary matrices for the six-vertex model atqN 1 and a geometric interpretation of its symmetries

Christian Korff

The construction of auxiliary matrices for the six-vertex model at a root of unity is investigated from a quantum group theoretic point of view. Employing the concept of intertwiners associated with the quantum loop algebra U q ( 2 ) at q N = 1, a three-parameter family of auxiliary matrices is constructed. The elements of this family satisfy a functional relation with the transfer matrix allowing one to solve the eigenvalue problem of the model and to derive the Bethe ansatz equations. This functional relation is obtained from the decomposition of a tensor product of evaluation representations and involves auxiliary matrices with different parameters. Because of this dependence on additional parameters, the auxiliary matrices break in general the finite symmetries of the six-vertex model, such as spin-reversal or spin-conservation. More importantly, they also lift the extra degeneracies of the transfer matrix due to the loop symmetry present at rational coupling values. The extra parameters in the auxiliary matrices are shown to be directly related to the elements in the enlarged centre Z of the algebra U q ( 2 ) at q N = 1. This connection provides a geometric interpretation of the enhanced symmetry of the six-vertex model at rational coupling. The parameters labelling the auxiliary matrices can be interpreted as coordinates on a hypersurface Spec Z ⊂ ℂ 4 which remains invariant under the action of an infinite-dimensional group G of analytic transformations, called the quantum coadjoint action.

Thesl2loop algebra symmetry of the twisted transfer matrix of the six-vertex model at roots of unity

Tetsuo Deguchi

We discuss a family of operators which commute or anti-commute with the twisted transfer matrix of the six-vertex model at q being roots of unity, q 2 N = 1. The operators commute with the Hamiltonian of the XXZ spin chain under the twisted boundary conditions, and they are also valid for the inhomogeneous case. For the case of the anti-periodic boundary conditions, we show explicitly that the operators generate the sl 2 loop algebra in the sector of the total spin operator S Z ≡ N /2(mod N ). The infinite-dimensional symmetry leads to exponentially-large spectral degeneracies, as shown for the periodic boundary conditions (Deguchi T, Fabricius K and McCoy B M 2001 J. Stat. Phys. 102 701). Furthermore, we derive explicitly the sl 2 loop algebra symmetry for the periodic XXZ spin chain with an odd number of sites in the sector S Z ≡ N /2(mod N ) when q is a primitive N th root of unity with N odd. Interestingly, in the case of N = 3, various conjectures of combinatorial formulae for the XXZ spin chain with odd sites have been given by Stroganov and other authors. We also note a connection to the spectral degeneracies of the eight-vertex model.

The twisted XXZ chain at roots of unity revisited

Christian Korff

The symmetries of the twisted XXZ spin-chain (alias the twisted six-vertex model) at roots of unity are investigated. It is shown that when the twist parameter is chosen to depend on the total spin an infinite-dimensional non-abelian symmetry algebra can be explicitly constructed for all spin sectors. This symmetry algebra is identified to be the upper or lower Borel subalgebra of the sl_2 loop algebra. The proof uses only the intertwining property of the six-vertex monodromy matrix and the familiar relations of the six-vertex Yang-Baxter algebra.

Extension of a Borel subalgebra symmetry into the sl(2) loop algebra symmetry for the twisted XXZ spin chain at roots of unity and the Onsager algebra

Tetsuo Deguchi

We discuss a conjecture that the twisted transfer matrix of the six-vertex model at roots of unity with some discrete twist angles should have the sl(2) loop algebra symmetry. As an evidence of this conjecture, we show the following mathematical result on a subalgebra of the sl(2) loop algebra, which we call a Borel subalgebra: any given finite-dimensional highest weight representation of the Borel subalgebra is extended into that of the sl(2) loop algebra, if the parameters associated with it are nonzero. Thus, if operators commuting or anti-commuting with the twisted transfer matrix of the six-vertex model at roots of unity generate the Borel subalgebra, then they also generate the sl(2) loop algebra. The result should be useful for studying the connection of the sl(2) loop algebra symmetry to the Onsager algebra symmetry of the superintegrable chiral Potts model.

Quantized six-vertex model at roots of unity: Frobenius property and free-parafermion spectra

Rei Inoue, Atsuo Kuniba, Yuji Terashima +1 more

We study the quantized six-vertex (Q6V) model on arbitrary admissible diagrams at $q=\varepsilon$, where $\varepsilon$ is a primitive $N$th root of unity with $N$ odd. For the commuting layer transfer matrices $\mathbb{T}(y)$ with mixed boundary conditions, we establish the quantum Frobenius property \[ \mathbb{T}(y)\mathbb{T}(\varepsilon y)\cdots \mathbb{T}(\varepsilon^{N-1}y) = \mathscr{P}_N(y^N)\mathbb{I}, \] where $\mathscr{P}_N$ is a scalar Laurent polynomial obtained directly from the monomial expansion of $\mathbb{T}(y)$. Our proof exploits the underlying three-dimensional integrability, in particular the tetrahedron equations and their consequences. The quantum Frobenius relation essentially determines the joint eigenvalues of the associated Hamiltonians up to multiplicities and shows that they take a free-parafermion form, thereby extending such structures from previously known one-dimensional examples to a broad class of genuinely two-dimensional quantized six-vertex models. The construction also admits independent local gauge choices and recovers the long-range-interacting $τ_{\; 2}$ model, which includes the original free-parafermion model as a special case. We also apply the same framework to the relativistic quantum Toda chain at odd roots of unity and obtain the free-parafermion spectra for the relevant Q6V transfer matrices with fixed boundary states.

TheQ-operator for root-of-unity symmetry in the six-vertex model

Shi-shyr Roan

We construct the explicit Q -operator incorporated with the sl 2 -loop-algebra symmetry of the six-vertex model at roots of unity. The functional relations involving the Q -operator, the six-vertex transfer matrix and fusion matrices are derived from the Bethe equation, parallel to the Onsager-algebra-symmetry discussion in the superintegrable N -state chiral Potts model. We show that the whole set of functional equations is valid for the Q -operator. Direct calculations in certain cases are also given here for clearer illustration about the nature of the Q -operator in the symmetry study of root-of-unity six-vertex model from the functional-relation aspect.
