Star-Triangle Relation for a Three Dimensional Model

Abstract

The solvable $sl(n)$-chiral Potts model can be interpreted as a three-dimensional lattice model with local interactions. To within a minor modification of the boundary conditions it is an Ising type model on the body centered cubic lattice with two- and three-spin interactions. The corresponding local Boltzmann weights obey a number of simple relations, including a restricted star-triangle relation, which is a modified version of the well-known star-triangle relation appearing in two-dimensional models. We show that these relations lead to remarkable symmetry properties of the Boltzmann weight function of an elementary cube of the lattice, related to spatial symmetry group of the cubic lattice. These symmetry properties allow one to prove the commutativity of the row-to-row transfer matrices, bypassing the tetrahedron relation. The partition function per site for the infinite lattice is calculated exactly.

INVERSION AND SYMMETRY RELATIONS FOR A THREE-DIMENSIONAL SOLVABLE MODEL

Vladimir V. Bazhanov

The solvable sl(n)-chiral Potts model can be interpreted as a three-dimensional lattice model with local interactions. To within a minor modification of the boundary conditions it is an Ising type model on the body centered cubic lattice with two- and three-spin interactions. We discuss the spatial symmetry properties of the model and show that its partition function per site obeys the inversion relation. The connection with the free boson model is also discussed.

A distant descendant of the six-vertex model

Vladimir V. Bazhanov, С. М. Сергеев

In this paper we present a new solution of the star-triangle relation having positive Boltzmann weights. The solution defines an exactly solvable two-dimensional Ising-type (edge interaction) model of statistical mechanics where the local “spin variables” can take arbitrary integer values, i.e., the number of possible spin states at each site of the lattice is infinite. There is also an equivalent “dual” formulation of the model, where the spins take continuous real values on the circle. From algebraic point of view this model is closely related to the to the 6-vertex model. It is connected with the construction of an intertwiner for two infinite-dimensional representations of the quantum affine algebra Uq(slˆ(2)) without the highest and lowest weights. The partition function of the model in the large lattice limit is calculated by the inversion relation method. Amazingly, it coincides with the partition function of the off-critical 8-vertex free-fermion model.

Symmetry relations in exactly soluble models

Marc-Thierry Jaekel, J.-M. Maillard

Symmetry relations such as the star-triangle or the inverse relation are very useful in determining the partition function of two-dimensional exactly soluble models. A common construction of the three-dimensional equivalents of these symmetry relations is presented. They are used to derive, in a geometric way applying simultaneously to different kinds of spin models, the consequent global properties, i.e. the commutativity of the transfer matrices and the inverse functional equations on the transfer matrix and the partition function. The usefulness of the inverse relation is illustrated by an application to the three-dimensional Ising model.

Star-Triangle and Star-Star Relations in Statistical Mechanics

R. J. Baxter

The homogeneous three-layer Zamolodchikov model is equivalent to a four-state model on the checkerboard lattice which closely resembles the four-state critical Potts model, but with some of its Boltzmann weights negated. Here we show that it satisfies a "star-to-reverse-star" (or simply star-star) relation, even though we know of no star-triangle relation for this model. For any nearest-neighbour checkerboard model, we show that this star-star relation is sufficient to ensure that the decimated model (where half the spins have been summed over) satisfies a "twisted" Yang-Baxter relation. This ensures that the transfer matrices of the original model commute in pairs, which is an adequate condition for "solvability".

SPATIAL SYMMETRY, LOCAL INTEGRABILITY AND TETRAHEDRON EQUATIONS IN THE BAXTER-BAZHANOV MODEL

Rinat Kashaev, Vladimir V. Mangazeev, Yu. G. Stroganov

We show that the Baxter-Bazhanov model is invariant under the action of the cube’s symmetry group. The three-dimensional star-star relations, proposed by Baxter and Bazhanov as local integrability conditions, correspond to a particular transformation from this group. Invariant Boltzmann weights, parametrized in terms of the Zamolodchikov angle variables, apparently satisfy the tetrahedron equations.

Partition Function of the Three-Dimensional Zamolodchikov Model

R. J. Baxter

It is shown that the Zamolodchikov model on the cubic lattice of $N$ sites is equivalent to a spin model on a lattice of $2N$ sites with just two-spin and three-spin interactions. Together with the known transfer-matrix commutativity, this implies that the partition function $Z$ (for $N$ large) factors into a product of single-variable functions. These functions, and hence $Z$, are calculated by using symmetry relations. The model appears to be a critical free-fermion model.
