Bloch oscillations of cold atoms in optical lattices

Abstract

This work is devoted to Bloch oscillations (BO) of cold neutral atoms in optical lattices. After a general introduction to the phenomenon of BO and its realization in optical lattices, we study different extentions of this problem, which account for recent developments in this field. These are two-dimensional BO, decoherence of BO, and BO in correlated systems. Although these problems are discussed in relation to the system of cold atoms in optical lattices, many of the results are of general validity and can be well applied to other systems showing the phenomenon of BO.

Bloch oscillations of cold atoms in two-dimensional optical lattices

Andrey R. Kolovsky, H. J. Korsch

Bloch oscillations of cold atoms in two-dimensional optical lattices are studied. The cases of separable and nonseparable potentials are compared by simulating the wave-packet dynamics. For these two classes of optical potential, the Bloch oscillations were found to be qualitatively the same in the case of a weak static field but fundamentally different in the case of a strong field. In addition, the dynamics of the atoms in a double-period potential (which can easily be realized in two dimensions) is studied for the regime of a weak static field.

Damped Bloch oscillations of cold atoms in optical lattices

Andrey R. Kolovsky, A. V. Ponomarev, H. J. Korsch

The paper studies Bloch oscillations of cold neutral atoms in the optical lattice. The effect of spontaneous emission on the dynamics of the system is analyzed both analytically and numerically. The spontaneous emission is shown to cause (i) the decay of Bloch oscillations with the decrement given by the rate of spontaneous emission and (ii) the diffusive spreading of the atoms with a diffusion coefficient depending on both the rate of spontaneous emission and the Bloch frequency.

Cold neutral atoms in optical lattices

Rui Zhang

In this thesis, I study the properties of cold neutral atoms, including Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC), inside periodic light-shift potentials created by optical lattices. In the first part, a new optical-lattice scheme, employing Raman transitions, hereafter referred to as a Raman Optical Lattice (ROL), is investigated. This optical lattice possesses a novel sub-Doppler cooling mechanism and a reduced periodicity. Both theoretical and experimental results con¯rm these two characteristics of the ROL. In the second half of the thesis, instead of thermal atoms, optical lattices are loaded with condensate atoms. Our BEC apparatus and the procedure towards forming a BEC are described in detail. After the achievement of the BEC, a 1D far-detuned optical lattice is applied to the BEC. A number of phenomena are observed, including Kapitza-Dirac diffraction, thermal atom interference, atom interferometry, Bloch oscillations, and a superfluid to Mott-insulator transition. Finally a brief discussion about future work is given.

New Bloch Period for Interacting Cold Atoms in 1D Optical Lattices

Andrey R. Kolovsky

This paper studies Bloch oscillations of ultracold atoms in an optical lattice, in the presence of atom-atom interactions. A new, interaction-induced Bloch period is identified. Analytical results are corroborated by realistic numerical calculations.

Dipole and Bloch oscillations of cold atoms in a parabolic lattice

A. V. Ponomarev, Andrey R. Kolovsky

The paper studies the dynamics of a Bose-Einstein condensate loaded in a 1D parabolic optical lattice and excited by a sudden shifting of the lattice center. Depending on the initial shift, this dynamics is either the dipole or Bloch oscillations of the atoms. The effects of the dephasing and atom-atom interactions on the above atomic oscillations are discussed.
