A general scheme for the effective-mass Schrodinger equation and the generation of the associated potentials

Abstract

A systematic procedure to study one-dimensional Schrodinger equation with a position-dependent effective mass (PDEM) in the kinetic energy operator is explored. The conventional free-particle problem reveals an interesting situation in that, in the presence of a mass background, formation of bound states is signalled. We also discuss coordinate-transformed, constant-mass Schrodinger equation, its matching with the PDEM form and the consequent decoupling of the ambiguity parameters. Many exact results are derived in this way.

A systematic procedure to study one-dimensional Schrödinger equation with a position-dependent effective mass (PDEM) in the kinetic energy operator is explored. The conventional free-particle problem reveals a new and interesting situation in that, in the presence of a mass background, formation of bound states is signalled. We also discuss coordinate-transformed, constant-mass Schrödinger equation, its matching with the PDEM form and the consequent decoupling of the ambiguity parameters. This provides a unified approach to many exact results known in the literature, as well as to a lot of new ones.

The coordinate transformation and the exact solutions of the Schrödinger equation with position-dependent effective mass

Ju Guo-Xing, Cai Chang-Ying, Xiang, Yang +1 more

Using the coordinate transformation method, we solve the one-dimensional Schrödinger equation with position-dependent mass(PDM). The explicit expressions for the potentials, energy eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the systems are given. The eigenfunctions can be expressed in terms of the Jacobi, Hemite and generalized Laguerre polynomials. All potentials for these solvable systems have an extra term $V_m$ which produced from the dependence of mass on the coordinate, compared with that for the systems of constant mass. The properties of $V_m$ for several mass functions are discussed.

On the position-dependent mass Schrödinger equation for Mie-type potentials

Gerardo Ovando, José Juan Peña, J. Morales +1 more

Abstract The exactly solvable Position Dependent Mass Schrödinger Equation (PDMSE) for Mie-type potentials is presented. To that, by means of a point canonical transformation the exactly solvable constant mass Schrödinger equation is transformed into a PDMSE. The mapping between both Schrödinger equations lets obtain the energy spectra and wave functions for the potential under study. This happens for any selection of the O von Roos ambiguity parameters involved in the kinetic energy operator. The exactly solvable multiparameter exponential-type potential for the constant mass Schrödinger equation constitutes the reference problem allowing to solve the PDMSE for Mie potentials and mass functions of the form given by m(x) = skx s-1/(xs + 1))2. Thereby, as a useful application of our proposal, the particular Lennard-Jones potential is presented as an example of Mie potential by considering the mass distribution m(x) = 6kx 5/(x 6 + 1))2. The proposed method is general and can be straightforwardly applied to the solution of the PDMSE for other potential models and/or with different position-dependent mass distributions.

Effective Mass Schrodinger Equation for Exactly Solvable Class of One-Dimensional Potentials

Metin Aktaş, R. Sever

We deal with the exact solutions of Schrodinger equation characterized by position-dependent effective mass via point canonical transformations. The Morse, Poschl-Teller and Hulthen type potentials are considered respectively. With the choice of position-dependent mass forms, exactly solvable target potentials are constructed. Their energy of the bound states and corresponding wavefunctions are determined exactly.

Semiclassical Method to Schrödinger Equation with Position-Dependent Effective Mass

Gang Chen, Pei-cai Xuan, Zidong Chen

In this paper, two novel semiclassical methods including the standard and supersymmetric WKB quantization conditions are suggested to discuss the Schrödinger equation with position-dependent effective mass. From a proper coordinate transformation, the formalism of the Schrödinger equation with position-dependent effective mass is mapped into isospectral one with constant mass and therefore for a given mass distribution and physical potential function the bound state energy spectrum can be determined easily by above method associated with a simple integral formula. It is shown that our method can give the analytical results for some exactly-solvable quantum systems.
