Direct calculation of the boundary S matrix for the open heisenberg chain

Abstract

Abstract: We calculate the boundary S matrix for the open antiferromagnetic spin 1/2 isotropic Heisenberg chain with boundary magnetic fields. Our approach, which starts from the model's Bethe Ansatz solution, is an extension of the Korepin-Andrei-Destri method. Our result agrees with the boundary S matrix for the boundary sine-Gordon model with \\beta^2 \\rightarrow 8\\pi and with ``fixed'' boundary conditions.

Exact S matrices for integrable quantum spin chains

Luca Mezincescu, Rafael I. Nepomechie

We begin with a review of the antiferromagnetic spin 1/2 Heisenberg chain. In particular, we show that the model has particle-like excitations with spin 1/2, and we compute the exact bulk S matrix. We then review our recent work which generalizes these results. We first consider an integrable alternating spin 1/2 - spin 1 chain. In addition to having excitations with spin 1/2, this model also has excitations with spin 0. We compute the bulk S matrix, which has some unusual features. We then consider the open antiferromagnetic spin 1/2 Heisenberg chain with boundary magnetic fields. We give a direct calculation of the boundary S matrix. Low-temperature features of thermodynamics of an open isotropic Heisenberg chain

Andrei A. Zvyagin, A. V. Makarova

Low-temperature magnetic susceptibility and specific heat of an antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain with open boundary conditions are calculated with the help of the exact Bethe ansatz method. These characteristics behave with temperature in a different way from those of a periodic chain.

Boundary S -matrix for the XXZ chain

Anastasia Doikou, Luca Mezincescu, Rafael I Nepomechie

We compute by means of the Bethe ansatz the boundary S -matrix for the open anisotropic spin- chain with diagonal boundary magnetic fields in the noncritical regime . Our result, which is formulated in terms of q -gamma functions, agrees with the vertex-operator result of Jimbo et al .

Integrable quantum spin chains

Anastasia Doikou

Integrable quantum spin chains are exactly solvable quantum mechanical models of N quantum spins, of which the Heisenberg model solved by Bethe is the prototype. In the antiferromagnetic regime, such spin chains can be regarded as lattice versions of corresponding integrable relativistic quantum field theories. For integrable spin chains, quantities of physical interest (spectrum, S matrix, etc.) can be calculated exactly by direct means, starting from the microscopic Hamiltonian, while for the corresponding field theories, such exact information has been primarily obtained by indirect means, such as the “ bootstrap ” approach and semiclassical approximations. We have been focused basically on the Heisenberg XXX and XXZ chains and their generalizations. Basic aims of this work were the study of the symmetries of these models and the computation, by means of Bethe ansatz equations, of the bulk and boundary S matrices for the closed and open chains respectively...

Boundary effects on the lattice/continuum correspondence: the spin-1/2 XXZ chain and the sine-Gordon model

Chihiro Matsui

We derived the corresponding boundary condition on Fermi fields to the spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain with boundary magnetic fields. In order to obtain the correct boundary condition from the variation of the action at the edges, we carefully treat the oscillating terms which emerge as a result of the chiral decomposition of fermions and do not contribute to the bulk Lagrangian. The obtained result is checked by compared with the exact result derived from the Bethe ansatz, by considering the mode expansion of fermions on the light-cone coordinates. We also give the spin-wave interpretation to the emergence of boundary bound states.
