Abstract

We introduce an effectively one-dimensional model of a bosonic gas of particles carrying collinear dipole moments which are induced by an external polarizing field with the strength periodically modulated along the coordinate, which gives rise to an effective nonlocal nonlinear lattice in the condensate. The existence, shape and stability of bright solitons, appearing in this model, are investigated by means of the variational approximation and numerical methods. The mobility of solitons and interactions between them are studied too.

Solitons in atomic condensates, with optical lattices and field-induced dipole moments

Lauro Tomio, H. L. F. da Luz, A. Gammal +1 more

We report some investigations on the existence of matter-wave solitons when considering cross-combined optical lattices (OL) in three dimensions (3D), where we have a nonlinear OL in one of the directions, which is perpendicular to a two-dimensional (2D) plane with linear OLs in either one or both directions. This study can be useful to manage 3D solitons through spatial modulations of the scattering length in one of the OL directions. Another independent study is reported, by considering bright solitons manifested in a bosonic condensate gas carrying collinear dipole moments, which induces an external polarizing field with strength periodically modulated along one of the coordinates. This leads to an effective nonlocal nonlinear lattice, with solitonic solutions. Their dynamics and mobility can be investigated by an effective one-dimensional (1D) model. Interactions between solitons are also reported within this 1D model. In all the cases, we consider full numerical and variational approaches.

Bright solitons in quasi-one-dimensional dipolar condensates with spatially modulated interactions

F. Kh. Abdullaev, A. Gammal, Boris A. Malomed +1 more

We introduce a model for the condensate of dipolar atoms or molecules, in which the dipole-dipole interaction (DDI) is periodically modulated in space due to a periodic change of the local orientation of the permanent dipoles, imposed by the corresponding structure of an external field (the necessary field can be created, in particular, by means of magnetic lattices, which are available to the experiment). The system represents a realization of a nonlocal nonlinear lattice, which has a potential to support various spatial modes. By means of numerical methods and variational approximation (VA), we construct bright one-dimensional solitons in this system and study their stability. In most cases, the VA provides good accuracy and correctly predicts the stability by means of the Vakhitov-Kolokolov criterion. It is found that the periodic modulation may destroy some solitons, which exist in the usual setting with unmodulated DDI and can create stable solitons in other cases, not verified in the absence of modulations. Unstable solitons typically transform into persistent localized breathers. The solitons are often mobile, with inelastic collisions between them leading to oscillating localized modes.

Dipolar Matter-Wave Soliton in One-Dimensional Optical Lattice with Tunable Local and Nonlocal Nonlinearities

Zhihuan Luo, Yongyao Li, Wei Pang +1 more

We study dipolar Bose–Einstein condensate (BEC) solitons in a one-dimensional optical lattice with the combined effect of local and nonlocal nonlinearities. The local nonlinearity is imposed by a magnetic or optical field via the Feshbach (FB) resonance. In contrast, the nonlocal nonlinearity is created by the long-range dipole–dipole interaction among the condensates. The orientations of the dipoles are directed by a rotatable uniform external field, which gives rise to a controllable nonlocal nonlinearity resulting from the angle θ between the direction of the dipole and the elongation of the lattice. If the lattice is sufficiently deep, this model can be described by the Gross–Pitaevskii equation (GPE) with tunable local and nonlocal nonlinear strengths (\(g\) and θ respectively). The formation, motion, and collision of the solitons in this system are studied by numerical simulations. The combined effect of the local and nonlocal nonlinearities gives a controllable scheme for all these characteristics via the relation between \(g\) and θ.

Matter-wave solitons supported by field-induced dipole-dipole repulsion with spatially modulated strength

Yongyao Li, Jingfeng Liu, Wei Pang +1 more

We demonstrate the existence of one- and two-dimensional (1D and 2D, respectively) bright solitons in the Bose-Einstein condensate with repulsive dipole-dipole interactions induced by a combination of dc and ac polarizing fields, oriented perpendicular to the plane in which the BEC is trapped, assuming that the strength of the fields grows in the radial ($r$) direction faster than ${r}^{3}$. Stable tightly confined 1D and 2D fundamental solitons, twisted solitons in 1D, and solitary vortices in 2D are found in a numerical form. The fundamental solitons remain robust under the action of an expulsive potential, which is induced by the interaction of the dipoles with the polarizing field. The confinement and scaling properties of the soliton families are explained analytically. The Thomas-Fermi approximation is elaborated for fundamental solitons. The mobility of the fundamental solitons is limited to the central area. Stable 1D even and odd solitons are also found in the setting with a double-well modulation function, along with a regime of Josephson oscillations.

Matter-wave bright solitons in bose-einstein condensate / Abdelaziz Benseghir

We investigate the properties of modulational instability in the Salerno equation in quasi-one dimension in Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). We analyzed the regions of modulational instability of nonlinear plane waves and determine the conditions of its existence in BEC. The existence and stability of strongly localized modes in discrete media is investigated with the framework of the Salerno model by using a linear analysis method. The regions of stability and instability are determined. Also the existence of localized modes for different values of parameters is shown numerically by homoclinic orbits intersection method. The response of Bose–Einstein condensates is studied with strong dipole–dipole atomic interactions to periodically varying perturbation. The dynamics is governed by the Gross–Pitaevskii equation with an additional nonlinear term, corresponding to nonlocal dipolar interactions. A mathematical model, based on the variational approximation, has been developed and applied to study parametric excitation of the condensates due to coefficient of nonlocal nonlinearity varying periodically. The model predicts the waveform of solitons in dipolar condensates and describes their small amplitude dynamics quite accurately. Theoretical predictions are verified by numerical simulations of the nonlocal Gross–Pitaevskii equation and a good agreement between them is found. The results can lead to better understanding of the properties of ultra-cold quantum gases, such as 52Cr, 164Dy and 168Er, where the long-range dipolar atomic interactions dominate the usual contact interactions. Dynamics of a matter wave soliton bouncing on the reflecting surface (atomic mirror) under the effect of gravity has been studied by analytical and numerical means. The iv analytical description is based on the variational approach. Resonant oscillations of the soliton's center of mass and width, induced by appropriate modulation of the atomic scattering length and the slope of the linear potential are analyzed. In numerical experiments, we observe the Fermi type acceleration of the soliton when the vertical position of the reflecting surface is periodically varied in time. Analytical predictions are compared with the results of numerical simulations of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation and a qualitative agreement between them is found.
