Exponential Operators, Dobinski Relations and Summability

Abstract

We investigate properties of exponential operators preserving the particle number using combinatorial methods developed in order to solve the boson normal ordering problem. In particular, we apply generalized Dobinski relations and methods of multivariate Bell polynomials which enable us to understand the meaning of perturbation-like expansions of exponential operators. Such expansions, obtained as formal power series, are everywhere divergent but the Pade summation method is shown to give results which very well agree with exact solutions got for simplified quantum models of the one mode bosonic systems.

Combinatorics of Boson Normal Ordering: the Dobinski Formula Revisited

K. A. Penson, A. I. Solomon

We derive explicit formulas for the normal ordering of powers of arbitrary monomials of boson operators. These formulas lead to generalisations of conventional Bell and Stirling numbers and to appropriate generalisations of the Dobinski relations. These new combinatorial numbers are shown to be coherent state matrix elements of powers of the monomials in question. It is further demonstrated that such Bell-type numbers, when considered as power moments, give rise to positive measures on the positive half-axis, which in many cases can be written in terms of known functions.

Combinatorics and Boson normal ordering: A gentle introduction

Paweł Błasiak, A. Horzela, K. A. Penson +2 more

We discuss a general combinatorial framework for operator ordering problems by applying it to the normal ordering of the powers and exponential of the boson number operator. The solution of the problem is given in terms of Bell and Stirling numbers enumerating partitions of a set. This framework reveals several inherent relations between ordering problems and combinatorial objects, and displays the analytical background to Wick’s theorem. The methodology can be straightforwardly generalized from the simple example we discuss to a wide class of operators.

From Quantum Mechanics to Quantum Field Theory: The Hopf route

A. I. Solomon, Gérard Duchamp, Paweł Błasiak +2 more

We show that the combinatorial numbers known as Bell numbers are generic in quantum physics. This is because they arise in the procedure known as Normal ordering of bosons, a procedure which is involved in the evaluation of quantum functions such as the canonical partition function of quantum statistical physics, inter alia . In fact, we shall show that an evaluation of the non-interacting partition function for a single boson system is identical to integrating the exponential generating function of the Bell numbers, which is a device for encapsulating a combinatorial sequence in a single function. We then introduce a remarkable equality, the Dobinski relation, and use it to indicate why renormalisation is necessary in even the simplest of perturbation expansions for a partition function. Finally we introduce a global algebraic description of this simple model, giving a Hopf algebra, which provides a starting point for extensions to more complex physical systems.

A note on normal ordering of degenerate integral powers of number operator

Taekyun Kim, Dae San Kim, Kyo Shin Hwang

This study derives the normal ordering expansion of degenerate integral powers of the number operator, (a†a)_{n,λ}, using recurrence relations for the coefficients and an operator action on number states. Here a† and a are respectively the boson creation and annihilation operators. We also determine the inverse of this normal ordering expansion. By analyzing diagonal coherent state elements of the degenerate integral powers of the number operator, we establish a combinatorial identity which yields a Dobinski-like formula for the degenerate Bell numbers at a specific value, connecting degenerate quantum operator calculus with combinatorics.

COHERENT STATE MEASURES AND THE EXTENDED DOBIŃSKI RELATIONS

K. A. Penson, A. I. Solomon

Conventional Bell and Stirling numbers arise naturally in the normal ordering of simple monomials in boson operators. By extending this process we obtain generalizations of these combinatorial numbers, defined as coherent state matrix elements of arbitrary monomials, as well as the associated Dobinski relations. These Bell-type numbers may be considered as power moments and give rise to positive measures which allow the explicit construction of new classes of coherent states.
