Squeezed quantum states on an interval and uncertainty relations for nanoscale systems

Abstract

We construct families of squeezed quantum states on an interval and analyze their asymptotic behavior. We study the localization properties of a kind of such states constructed on the basis of the theta function. For the coordinate and momentum dispersions of a quantum particle on an interval, we obtain estimates that apply, in particular, to nanoscale systems.

Localization properties of squeezed quantum states in nanoscale space domains

Anton Sergeevich Trushechkin, I. V. Volovich

We construct families of squeezed quantum states on an interval (depending on boundary conditions, we interpret the interval as a circle or as the infinite square potential well) and obtain estimates of position and momentum dispersions for these states. A particular attention is paid to the possibility of proper localization of a particle in nanoscale space domains. One of the constructed family of squeezed states is based on the theta function. It is a generalization of the known coherent and squeezed states on the circle. Also we construct a family of squeezed states based on truncated Gaussian functions and a family of wave packets based on the discretization of an arbitrary continuous momentum probability distribution. The problem of finiteness of the energy dispersion for the squeezed states in the infinite well is discussed. Finally, we perform the limit of large interval length and the semiclassical limit. As a supplementary general result, we show that an arbitrary physical quantity has a finite dispersion if and only if the wave function of a quantum system belongs to the domain of the corresponding self-adjoint operator. This can be regarded as a physical meaning of the domain of a self-adjoint operator.

Morse-like squeezed coherent states and some of their properties

O de los Santos-Sánchez, J. Récamier

Using the f-deformed oscillator formalism, we introduce a class of squeezed coherent states for a Morse potential system (Morse-like squeezed coherent states) defined as approximate eigenstates of a linear combination of f-deformed ladder operators. For the states thus constructed, we analyze their statistical properties, their uncertainty relations, their Wigner function and their temporal evolution on phase space.

Position eigenstates via application of an operator on the vacuum

H. M. Moya-Cessa, Francisco Soto

The squeezed states are states of minimum uncertainty, but unlike the coherent states, in which the uncertainty in the position and the momentum are the same, these allow to reduce the uncertainty, either in the position or in the momentum, while maintaining the principle of uncertainty in its minimum. It seems that this property of the squeezed states would allow you to get the position eigenstates as a limit case of them, doing null the uncertainty in the position and infinite at the momentum. However, there are two equivalent ways to define the squeezed states, which lead to different expressions for the limit states. In this work, we analyze these two definitions of the squeezed states and show the advantages and disadvantages of using such definition to find the position eigenstates. With this idea in mind, but leaving aside the definitions of the squeezed states, we find an operator applied to the vacuum that gives us the position eigenstates. We also analyze some properties of the squeezed states, based on the new expressions obtained for the eigenstates of the position.

On the uncertainty relations and squeezed states for the quantum mechanics on a circle

K. Kowalski, Jakub Rembieliński

The uncertainty relations for the position and momentum of a quantum particle on a circle are identified as minimized by the corresponding coherent states. The squeezed states in the case of the circular motion are introduced and discussed in the context of the uncertainty relations.

Correlations in open quantum systems and associated uncertainty relations

Sergey A. Ponomarenko, E. Wolf

We study how correlations in a state of an open quantum system affect the intrinsic uncertainties of the expectation values of an arbitrary pair of noncommuting observables. We show that for such observables, there exist Heisenberg-type uncertainty relations that take fully into account correlations in the state of the system. If the quantum system is in a pure state, such uncertainty relations reduce to the conventional one. We obtain an equation for the density operator of a general state that minimizes the new uncertainty relations, and demonstrate that in the important case of coordinate and momentum operators, the minimum-uncertainty states are displaced squeezed thermal states.

Squeezed coherent states and the Morse quantum system

Maia N Angelova, Véronique Hussin

The Morse potential quantum system is a realistic model for studying vibrations of atoms in a diatomic molecule. This system is very close to the harmonic oscillator one. We thus propose a construction of squeezed coherent states similar to the one of harmonic oscillator using ladder operators. Properties of these states are analysed with respect to the localization in position, minimal Heisenberg uncertainty relation, the statistical properties and illustrated with examples using the finite number of states in a well-known diatomic molecule.
