Quantization of Wilson loops in Wess-Zumino-Witten models

Abstract

We describe a non-perturbative quantization of classical Wilson loops in the WZW model. The quantized Wilson loop is an operator acting on the Hilbert space of closed strings and commuting either with the full Kac-Moody chiral algebra or with one of its subalgebras. We prove that under open/closed string duality, it is dual to a boundary perturbation of the open string theory. As an application, we show that such operators are useful tools for identifying fixed points of the boundary renormalization group flow.

Defect loops in gauged Wess-Zumino-Witten models

Constantin P. Bachas, Samuel Monnier

We consider loop observables in gauged Wess-Zumino-Witten models, and study the action of renormalization group flows on them. In the WZW model based on a compact Lie group G, we analyze at the classical level how the space of renormalizable defects is reduced upon the imposition of global and affine symmetries. We identify families of loop observables which are invariant with respect to an affine symmetry corresponding to a subgroup H of G, and show that they descend to gauge-invariant defects in the gauged model based on G/H. We study the flows acting on these families perturbatively, and quantize the fixed points of the flows exactly. From their action on boundary states, we present a derivation of the “generalized Affleck-Ludwig rule”, which describes a large class of boundary renormalization group flows in rational conformal field theories.

Exact operator dynamics in Lindbladian Wess-Zumino-Witten conformal field theories

Qicheng Tang, Ruhanshi Barad, Xueda Wen

Understanding the time evolution of physical observables in open quantum many-body systems coupled to external environments is a natural and difficult problem, and exact results are still rare. In this work, we study this problem for Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) conformal field theories with Lindblad jump operators linear in Kac-Moody current modes. We investigate the exact operator dynamics generated by these Lindbladians, identifying classes of current operators whose Heisenberg equations close and can therefore be solved analytically using the underlying current algebra. In Abelian $U(1)_k$ WZW theories, this closure of operator dynamics holds for arbitrary settings of jump rates and includes exactly tractable cooling dynamics. In contrast, for non-Abelian WZW theories, exact closure occurs only for symmetric current-mode dissipation, where upward and downward current-mode transitions occur with equal rates, and even then it leads to a simple closed evolution only for a single current operator. Generic imbalances, including those needed for cooling, produce additional non-Abelian terms and prevent closure of the opeartor dynamics. Consequently, the current algebra gives rise to a broad family of exactly solvable dissipative dynamics in the Abelian setting, whereas in the non-Abelian case it singles out only a special exactly solvable dynamics corresponding to an infinite-temperature bath.

Non-Lagrangian phases of matter from Wilsonian renormalization of 3D Wess-Zumino-Witten theory on Stiefel manifolds

Shouryya Ray

I study the renormalization of D-dimensional level-k Wess-Zumino-Witten theory with Stiefel-manifold target space $\mathrm{St}_{N,N-D-1} \cong \mathrm{SO}(N)/\mathrm{SO}(D+1)$, with a particular focus on $D = 3$. I investigate in particular whether such a theory admits IR-stable fixed points of the renormalization group flow. Such fixed points have been suggested to describe conformal phases of matter that do not have a known dual (super-)renormalizable Lagrangian for $N \geq 7$ in $D = 3$. They are hence of interest both from the point of view of quantum phases of matter as well as pure field theory. The $D$-dimensional expressions enable the computation, by analytic computation, of beta functions in $D = 2 + ε$, at least to first non-trivial order. In $D = 2$, a stable fixed point is found, serving a generalization of the famed $\mathrm{SU}(2)_k$ Wess-Zumino-Witten conformal field theory; it annihilates in $D = 2 + ε$ with an unstable fixed point which splits off from the Gaussian one for $ε> 0$. Although the story is thus qualitatively similar to that of SO(5) deconfined (pseudo-)criticality, for $N \geqslant 6$, the annihilation appears to occur only for $ε> 1$, suggesting the existence of a stable phase in $D = 3$. Comparisons of the scaling dimension of the lowest singlet operator are made with known results for $N = 6$, which is dual to QED$_3$ with $N_\mathrm{f} = 4$ fermion flavors. The predictions for the $N = 7$ Stiefel liquid represent to my knowledge the first computation of this kind for a Wess-Zumino-Witten theory without a known gauge theory dual.

Loop Operators and the Kondo Problem

Constantin P. Bachas, Matthias R. Gaberdiel B

We analyse the renormalisation group flow for D-branes in WZW models from the point of view of the boundary states. To this end we consider loop operators that perturb the boundary states away from their ultraviolet fixed points, and show how to regularise and renormalise them consistently with the global symmetries of the problem. We pay particular attention to the chiral operators that only depend on left-moving currents, and which are attractors of the renormalisation group flow. We check (to lowest non-trivial order in the coupling constant) that at their stable infrared fixed points these operators measure quantum monodromies, in agreement with previous semiclassical studies. Our results help clarify the general relationship between boundary transfer matrices and defect lines, which parallels the relation between (non-commutative) fields on (a stack of) D-branes and their push-forwards to the target-space bulk.

Functional renormalization group analysis of the O ( 3 ) nonlinear sigma model and non-Abelian bosonization duality

Junichi Haruna, Keito Shimizu, Masatoshi Yamada

It is known that the U ( 2 ) Wess-Zumino-Witten model is dual to the free fermion theory in two dimensions via non-Abelian bosonization. While it is decomposed into the S U ( 2 ) Wess-Zumino-Witten model and a free compact boson, the former is believed to be equivalent to the O ( 3 ) nonlinear sigma model with the theta term at θ = π . In this work, we reexamine this duality through the lens of nonperturbative renormalization group (RG) flow. We analyze the RG flow structure of the O ( 3 ) nonlinear sigma model with the theta term in two dimensions using the functional renormalization group. Our results reveal a nontrivial fixed point with a nonzero value of the topological coupling. The scaling dimensions (critical exponents) at this fixed point suggest the realization of a duality between the O ( 3 ) nonlinear sigma model with the theta term and the free fermion theory, indicating that these models belong to the same universality class.

Effective Hamiltonians and Wilson-Polchinski renormalisation

R K Li, Benoît Vicedo

A bstract We develop a novel approach to the Wilsonian renormalisation of Hamiltonians for 2-dimensional quantum field theories on the cylinder described in the UV by marginally relevant deformations of conformal field theories. To introduce a Wilsonian short-distance cutoff we make essential use of free field realisations of the full vertex operator algebra in the UV. Our method is intrinsically non-perturbative; we derive a Hamiltonian analogue of Polchinski’s equation describing the flows of all couplings. As a primary example of our general method, we apply it to the marginal anisotropic deformation of the $$ {\mathfrak{su}}_2 $$ su 2 Wess-Zumino-Witten model at level 1, which is equivalent to the sine-Gordon model on the cylinder. In particular, we reproduce the standard renormalisation group flow of the sine-Gordon model near the Kosterlitz-Thouless point to second order in the couplings, a result usually derived using Lagrangian/path-integral methods.
