Abstract

We investigate the coupling efficiency of parametric downconversion light (PDC) into single and multi-mode optical fibers as a function of the pump beam diameter, crystal length and walk-off. We outline two different theoretical models for the preparation and collection of either single-mode or multi-mode PDC light (defined by, for instance, multi-mode fibers or apertures, corresponding to bucket detection). Moreover, we define the mode-matching collection efficiency, important for realizing a single-photon source based on PDC output into a well-defined single spatial mode. We also define a multimode collection efficiency that is useful for single-photon detector calibration applications. 1.

On the measurement of two-photon single-mode coupling efficiency in parametric down-conversion photon sources

Stefania Castelletto, Ivo Pietro Degiovanni, Alan L. Migdall +1 more

Photon-based quantum information schemes have increased the need for light sources that produce individual photons, with many such schemes relying on optical parametric down-conversion (PDC). Practical realizations of this technology require that the PDC light be collected into a single spatial mode defined by an optical fibre. We present two possible models to describe single-mode fibres coupling with PDC light fields in a non-collinear configuration, that lead to two different results. These approaches include factors such as crystal length and walk-off, non-collinear phase-matching and transverse pump field distribution. We propose an experimental test to distinguish between the two. The goal is to help clarify open issues, such as how to extend the theory beyond the simplest experimental arrangements and, more importantly, to suggest ways to improve the collection efficiency.

Optimizing the coupling efficiency of spontaneous parametric down-conversion photon pairs into single-mode fibers

Nicolas Schwaller, Geobae Park, Ryo Okamoto +1 more

Both correlated-mode coupling efficiency and photon pair flux (brightness) of spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) coupled into single-mode fibers are key parameters for various quantum information science applications. We present an experimental investigation on the optimization of the correlated-mode coupling efficiency and the brightness of frequency-degenerated SPDC photon pairs into single-mode optical fibers. Using photon pairs generated from a type-I phase-matched bulk $\ensuremath{\beta}$-barium borate crystal pumped by a continuous-wave laser, we carefully evaluated both the correlated-mode coupling efficiency and the brightness of SPDC light coupled to a single-mode optical fiber, while continuously changing the focusing of the pump and collection modes, experimenting with Rayleigh lengths from 3 to 280 (for the pump) and 0.2 to 20 (for the collection) times the crystal length. The measured data suggest that the correlated-mode coupling efficiency can be close to unity for any pump focus, however, the optimal Rayleigh length of the collection mode depends on the pump focus parameter, and the brightness can be increased by tightening the pump focus, provided that the Rayleigh length of the collection mode is precisely adjusted. A maximal correlated-mode coupling efficiency of $99.0\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1.3%$ was experimentally achieved. These results will be useful for photonic quantum science and technology using SPDC sources with high heralding efficiencies.

Spatial and spectral mode selection of heralded single photons from pulsed parametric down-conversion

Stefania Castelletto, Ivo Pietro Degiovanni, Valentina Schettini +1 more

We describe an experiment in which photon pairs from a pulsed parametric down-conversion (PDC) source were coupled into single-mode fibers with heralding efficiencies as high as 70%. Heralding efficiency or mode preparation efficiency is defined as the probability of finding a photon in a fiber in a definite state, given the detection of its twin. Heralding efficiencies were obtained for a range of down-conversion beam-size configurations. Analysis of spatial and spectral mode selection, and their mutual correlation, provides a practical guide for engineering PDC-produced single photons in a definite mode and spectral emission band. The spectrum of the heralded photons were measured for each beam configuration, to determine the interplay between transverse momentum and spectral entanglement on the preparation efficiency.

Optimal coupling of entangled photons into single-mode optical fibers

Roger Andrews, Edward R. Pike, Sarben Sarkar

We present a consistent multimode theory that describes the coupling of single photons generated by collinear Type-I parametric downconversion into single-mode optical fibers. We have calculated an analytic expression for the fiber diameter which maximizes the pair photon count rate. For a given focal length and wavelength, a lower limit of the fiber diameter for satisfactory coupling is obtained.
