Measure of phonon-number moments and motional quadratures through infinitesimal-time probing of trapped ions

Abstract

A method for gaining information about the phonon-number moments and the generalized nonlinear and linear quadratures in the motion of trapped ions (in particular, position and momentum) is proposed, valid inside and outside the Lamb-Dicke regime. It is based on the measurement of first time derivatives of electronic populations, evaluated at the motion-probe interaction time τ = 0.In contrast to other state-reconstruction proposals, based on measuring Rabi oscillations or dispersive interactions, the present scheme can be performed resonantly at infinitesimal short motion-probe interaction times, remaining thus insensitive to decoherence processes.

Motional-state analysis of a trapped ion by ultranarrowband composite pulses

Marion Mallweger, Milena Guevara-Bertsch, Boyan T. Torosov +7 more

In this work, we present a method for measuring the motional state of a two-level system coupled to a harmonic oscillator. Our technique uses ultranarrowband composite pulses on the blue sideband transition to scan through the populations of the different motional states. Our approach does not assume any previous knowledge of the motional state distribution and is easily implemented. It is applicable both inside and outside of the Lamb-Dicke regime. For higher phonon numbers especially, the composite pulse sequence can be used as a filter for measuring phonon number ranges. We demonstrate this measurement technique using a single trapped ion and show good detection results with the numerically evaluated pulse sequence. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Reconstructing the phonon distribution of trapped ions out of the Lamb-Dicke regime

Christophe H. Valahu, Prachi Nagpal, Teerawat Chalermpusitarak +6 more

Characterizing the phonon distribution of trapped-ion motional states is essential for many applications in quantum information processing, but existing methods become ill-conditioned beyond the Lamb-Dicke regime. We overcome this limitation by recasting phonon-state reconstruction as a filter-function inversion problem. Using composite pulses on the carrier and multiple sidebands, we engineer well-conditioned filters in phonon space to characterize pure and mixed states, study heating dynamics, and reconstruct Fock states up to $n=250$.

Cross-Kerr Nonlinearity for Phonon Counting

Shiqian Ding, Gleb Maslennikov, Roland Hablützel +1 more

State measurement of a quantum harmonic oscillator is essential in quantum optics and quantum information processing. In a system of trapped ions, we experimentally demonstrate the projective measurement of the state of the ions' motional mode via an effective cross-Kerr coupling to another motional mode. This coupling is induced by the intrinsic nonlinearity of the Coulomb interaction between the ions. We spectroscopically resolve the frequency shift of the motional sideband of the first mode due to the presence of single phonons in the second mode and use it to reconstruct the phonon number distribution of the second mode.

Motion tomography of a single trapped ion

J. F. Poyatos, R. Walser, J. I. Cirac +2 more

A method for the experimental reconstruction of the quantum state of motion for a single trapped ion is proposed. It is based on the measurement of the ground-state population of the trap after a sudden change of the trapping potential. In particular, we show how the $Q(\ensuremath{\alpha})$ function and the quadrature distribution $P(x, \ensuremath{\theta})$ can be measured directly. In an example we demonstrate the principle and analyze the sensitivity of the reconstruction process to experimental uncertainties as well as to finite grid limitations. Our method is not restricted to the Lamb-Dicke Limit and works in one or more dimensions.

Direct Measurement of Squeezing in the Motion of Trapped Ions

Zeng Hao-Sheng, Hu Ai-Qin, Qiong Liu +1 more

We present a simple method that can be used to directly measure the squeezing of the quantum motional states of a trapped ion. Through the use of the interaction between the trapped ion and classical lasers, one can design a required coupling between the internal electronic and external vibrational degrees of freedom of the ion and can transfer information of the expectation value of a vibrational operator to the atomic internal populations. Thus measurement of squeezing on the quantum motional state can directly be realized. By adjusting the phases of the interacting lasers, one can measure the squeezing of both position and momentum quadratures.
