Non-equilibrium stationary state of a two-temperature spin chain

Abstract

A kinetic one-dimensional Ising model is coupled to two heat baths, such that spins at even (odd) lattice sites experience a temperature T-e (T-o). Spin-flips occur with Glauber-type rates generalized to the case of two temperatures. Driven by the temperature differential, the spin chain settles into a nonequilibrium steady state which corresponds to the stationary solution of a master equation. We construct a perturbation expansion of this master equation in terms of the temperature difference and compute explicitly the first two corrections to the equilibrium Boltzmann distribution. The key result is the emergence of additional spin operators in the steady state, increasing in spatial range and order of spin products. We comment on the violation of detailed balance and entropy production in the steady state.

Stationary correlations for a far-from-equilibrium spin chain

B. Schmittmann, Frank Schmüser

A kinetic one-dimensional Ising model on a ring evolves according to a generalization of Glauber rates, such that spins at even (odd) lattice sites experience a temperature T(e) (T(o)). Detailed balance is violated so that the spin chain settles into a nonequilibrium stationary state, characterized by multiple interactions of increasing range and spin order. We derive the equations of motion for arbitrary correlation functions and solve them to obtain an exact representation of the steady state. Two nontrivial amplitudes reflect the sublattice symmetries; otherwise, correlations decay exponentially, modulo the periodicity of the ring. In the long-chain limit, they factorize into products of two-point functions, in precise analogy to the equilibrium Ising chain. The exact solution confirms the expectation, based on simulations and renormalization group arguments, that the long-time, long-distance behavior of this two-temperature model is Ising-like, in spite of the apparent complexity of the stationary distribution.

One-dimensional kinetic Ising model with competing spin-flip and spin-exchange dynamics: Ordering in the case of long-range exchanges

Michel Droz, Zoltàn Ràcz, P. Tartaglia

Ordering of a one-dimensional stochastic Ising model evolving by a combination of spin flips and spin exchanges is investigated. The spin-flip rates satisfy detailed balance for the equilibrium state of the Ising model at temperature T, while the spin exchanges are random and of arbitrary range. Analytical methods and Monte Carlo simulations are used to show that, depending on the details of the spin-flip rate, finite-temperature phase transition may or may not occur in the system. When ordering occurs, it is of mean-field type and the scaling function describing the finite-size scaling of the magnetization fluctuations is found to be indistinguishable from that of an equilibrium Ising model with infinite-range interaction.

Nonequilibrium thermal entanglement for simple spin chains

Ilya Sinayskiy, N. Pumulo, Francesco Petruccione

The dynamics of a chain of two and three spins coupled at both ends to separate bosonic baths at different temperatures is studied. An exact analytical solution of the quantum master equation in the Born-Markov approximation for the reduced density matrix of the chain is constructed. It is shown that for long times the reduced density matrix converges to the nonequilibrium steady-state. Dynamical and steady state properties of the concurrence between the first and the last spin are studied.

The Glauber and Metropolis Transition Rates on the Stationary States of the Ising Model

G. L. S. Paula, W. Figueiredo

We have applied the Glauber and Metropolis prescriptions to investigate the stationary states of the Ising model in one and two dimensions. We have employed the formalism of the master equation to follow the evolution of the system towards the stationary states. Although the Glauber and Metropolis transition rates lead the system to the same equilibrium states for the Ising model in the Monte Carlo simulations, we show that they can predict different results if we disregard the correlations between spins. The critical temperature of the one-dimensional Ising model cannot even be found by using the Metropolis algorithm and the mean field approximation. However, taking into account only correlations between nearest neighbor spins, the resulting stationary states become identical for both Glauber and Metropolis transition rates.

Dynamics of Ising models near zero temperature: real-space renormalization approach

Cécile Monthus, Thomas Garel

We consider the stochastic dynamics of Ising ferromagnets (either pure or random) near zero temperature. The master equation satisfying detailed balance can be mapped onto a quantum Hamiltonian which has an exact zero-energy ground state representing the thermal equilibrium. The largest relaxation time $t_{eq}$ governing the convergence towards this Boltzmann equilibrium in finite-size systems is determined by the lowest non-vanishing eigenvalue $E_1=1/t_{eq}$ of the quantum Hamiltonian $H$. We introduce and study a real-space renormalization procedure for the quantum Hamiltonian associated to the single-spin-flip dynamics of Ising ferromagnets near zero temperature. We solve explicitly the renormalization flow for two cases. (i) For the one-dimensional random ferromagnetic chain with free boundary conditions, the largest relaxation time $t_{eq}$ can be expressed in terms of the set of random couplings for various choices of the dynamical transition rates. The validity of these RG results in $d=1$ is checked by comparison with another approach. (ii) For the pure Ising model on a Cayley tree of branching ratio $K$, we compute the exponential growth of $t_{eq}(N)$ with the number $N$ of generations.
