Holographic entropy inequalities and gapped phases of matter

Abstract

Here, we extend our studies of holographic entropy inequalities to gapped phases of matter. For any number of regions, we determine the linear entropy inequalities satisfied by systems in which the entanglement entropy satisfies an exact area law. In particular, we find that all holographic entropy inequalities are valid in such systems. In gapped systems with topological order, the “cyclic inequalities” derived recently for the holo-graphic entanglement entropy generalize the Kitaev-Preskill formula for the topological entanglement entropy. Finally, we propose a candidate linear inequality for general 4-party quantum states.

A graphical framework for proving holographic entanglement entropy inequalities in multipartite systems

Chia-Jui Chou, Hans B. Lao, Yi Yang

We present a graphical method for proving holographic entanglement entropy inequalities (HEIs) in general multipartite systems. By introducing a geometric representation of the entanglement structure, we develop a systematic approach that enables one to visualize and verify the validity of HEIs for any number of subsystems $n$. Several theorems are established to formalize this method, and explicit examples are provided for systems with $n = 4$ to $7$ entangled regions.

Topological entanglement entropy meets holographic entropy inequalities

Joydeep Naskar, Sai Satyam Samal

Topological entanglement entropy (TEE) is an efficient way to detect topological order in the ground state of gapped Hamiltonians. The seminal work of Kitaev and Preskill~\cite{preskill-kitaev-tee} and simultaneously by Levin and Wen~\cite{levin-wen-tee} proposed information quantities that can probe the TEE. In the present work, we explain why the subtraction schemes in the proposed information quantities~\cite{levin-wen-tee,preskill-kitaev-tee} work for the computation of TEE and generalize them for arbitrary number of subregions by explicitly noting the necessary conditions for an information quantity to capture TEE. Our conditions differentiate the probes defined by Kitaev-Preskill and Levin-Wen into separate classes. While there are infinitely many possible probes of TEE, we focus particularly on the cyclic quantities $Q_{2n+1}$ and multi-information $I_n$. We also show that the holographic entropy inequalities are satisfied by the quantum entanglement entropy of the non-degenerate ground state of a topologically ordered two-dimensional medium with a mass gap.

Non-linear Holographic Entanglement Entropy Inequalities for Single Boundary 2D CFT

Brown, Emory, Ning Bao, Sepehr Nezami

Significant work has gone into determining the minimal set of entropy inequalities that determine the holographic entropy cone. Holographic systems with three or more parties have been shown to obey additional inequalities that generic quantum systems do not. We consider a two dimensional conformal field theory that is a single boundary of a holographic system and find four additional non-linear inequalities which are derived from strong subadditivity and the formula for the entanglement entropy of a region on the conformal field theory. We also present an equality obtained by application of a hyperbolic extension of Ptolemy's theorem to a two dimensional conformal field theory.

Structure of the entanglement entropy of (3+1)-dimensional gapped phases of matter

Yunqin Zheng, Huan He, Barry Bradlyn +3 more

We study the entanglement entropy of gapped phases of matter in three spatial dimensions. We focus in particular on size-independent contributions to the entropy across entanglement surfaces of arbitrary topologies. We show that for low energy fixed-point theories, the constant part of the entanglement entropy across any surface can be reduced to a linear combination of the entropies across a sphere and a torus. We first derive our results using strong sub-additivity inequalities along with assumptions about the entanglement entropy of fixed-point models, and identify the topological contribution by considering the renormalization group flow; in this way we give an explicit definition of topological entanglement entropy ${S}_{\mathrm{topo}}$ in (3+1)D, which sharpens previous results. We illustrate our results using several concrete examples and independent calculations, and show adding ``twist'' terms to the Lagrangian can change ${S}_{\mathrm{topo}}$ in (3+1)D. For the generalized Walker-Wang models, we find that the ground state degeneracy on a 3-torus is given by $exp(\ensuremath{-}3{S}_{\mathrm{topo}}[{T}^{2}])$ in terms of the topological entanglement entropy across a 2-torus. We conjecture that a similar relationship holds for Abelian theories in $(d+1)$ dimensional spacetime, with the ground state degeneracy on the $d$-torus given by $exp(\ensuremath{-}d{S}_{\mathrm{topo}}[{T}^{d\ensuremath{-}1}])$.

Physical proof of the topological entanglement entropy inequality

Michael Levin

It is generally believed that two-dimensional gapped phases of matter with anyon excitations have a special pattern of entanglement in their ground-state wave function. Recently, this intuition was formalized by a universal inequality relating the topological entanglement entropy of a gapped ground state to the total quantum dimension of its anyon excitations. This paper presents an alternative, more direct proof of this inequality.
