Chiral p-wave pairing of ultracold fermionic atoms due to a quadratic band touching

Abstract

We study the superfuild ground state of ultracold fermions in optical lattices with a quadratic band touching. Examples are a checkerboard lattice around half filling and a kagome lattice above one third filling. Instead of pairing between spin states, here we focus on pairing interactions between different orbital states. We find that our systems have only odd-parity (orbital) pairing instability while the singlet (orbital) pairing instability vanishes thanks to the quadratic band touching. In the mean field level, the ground state is found to be a chiral p-wave pairing superfluid (mixed with finite f-wave pairing order-parameters) which supports Majorana fermions.

Emergence of triplet orbital pairing and non-Abelian states in ultracold multi-orbital optical lattices with quadratic band touching

Jian‐Hua Jiang

It is found that all the {\em singlet orbital pairing} instabilities are {\em absent} in a class of spin-polarized multi-orbital systems with quadratic band touching, which opens the way for {\em triplet orbital pairing} order. The ground states are found to be {\em non-Abelian} states with p-wave orbital pairing in checkerboard (away from 1/2 filling) and kagome (above 1/3 filling) lattices with {\em isotropic} attractive interaction which can be realized in ultracold multi-orbital optical lattices. The special property of such systems is generalized to more classes of multi-orbital systems, where the fully-gapped {\em non-Abelian} states are possibly the ground states. Those findings are helpful in achieving topological quantum computation.

Topological superfluid of s -wave-interacting fermions by engineered orbital hybridization in an optical lattice

Maksims Arzamasovs, Shuai Li, Shuqi Han +2 more

Recent advanced experimental implementations of optical lattices with highly tunable geometry open up new regimes for exploring quantum many-body states of matter that had not been accessible previously. Here we report that a topological fermionic superfluid with higher Chern number emerges spontaneously from $s$-wave spin-singlet pairing in an orbital optical lattice when its geometry is tuned to explicitly break reflection symmetry. Qualitatively distinct from the conventional scheme that relies on higher partial-wave pairing, the crucial ingredient of our model is topology originating from mixing higher Wannier orbitals. It leads to unexpected changes in the topological band structure at the single-particle level, i.e., the bands are transformed from possessing two flux-$\ensuremath{\pi}$ Dirac points into a single quadratic touching point with flux $2\ensuremath{\pi}$. Based on such engineered single-particle bands, spin-singlet pairing of ultracold fermions arising from standard $s$-wave attractive interaction is found to induce higher Chern number (Chern number of 2) and topologically protected chiral edge modes, all occurring at a higher critical temperatures in relative scales, potentially circumventing one of the major obstacle for its realization in ultracold gases.

Odd-parity topological superfluidity for fermions in a bond-centered square optical lattice

Zhi-Fang Xu, Andreas Hemmerich, W. Vincent Liu

We propose a physical scheme for the realization of two-dimensional topological odd-parity superfluidity in a spin-independent bond-centered square optical lattice based upon interband fermion pairing. The ${D}_{4}$ point-group symmetry of the lattice protects a quadratic band crossing, which allows one to prepare a Fermi surface of spin-up fermions with odd parity close to the degeneracy point. In the presence of spin-down fermions with even parity populating a different energetically well-separated band, odd-parity pairing is favored. Strikingly, as a necessary prerequisite for pairing, both Fermi surfaces can be tuned to match well. As a result, topological superfluid phases emerge in the presence of merely $s$-wave interaction. Due to the ${Z}_{2}$ symmetry of these odd-parity superfluids, we infer their topological features simply from the symmetry and the Fermi-surface topology as confirmed numerically.

Modulated pair condensate of p -orbital ultracold fermions

Zixu Zhang, Hsiang-Hsuan Hung, Chiu Man Ho +2 more

We show that an interesting kind of pairing occurs for spin-imbalanced Fermi gases under a specific experimental condition---the spin up and spin down Fermi levels lying within the ${p}_{x}$ and $s$ orbital bands of an optical lattice, respectively. The pairs condense at a finite momentum equal to the sum of the two Fermi momenta of spin up and spin down fermions and form a $p$-orbital pair condensate. This $2{k}_{F}$ momentum dependence has been seen before in spin- and charge-density waves, but it differs from the usual $p$-wave superfluids such as $^{3}\mathrm{He}$, where the orbital symmetry refers to the relative motion within each pair. Our conclusion is based on the density matrix renormalization group analysis for the one-dimensional (1D) system and mean-field theory for the quasi-1D system. The phase diagram of the quasi-1D system is calculated, showing that the $p$-orbital pair condensate occurs in a wide range of fillings. In the strongly attractive limit, the system realizes an unconventional BEC beyond Feynman's no-node theorem. The possible experimental signatures of this phase in molecule projection experiment are discussed.

Majorana fermions in quasi-one-dimensional and higher-dimensional ultracold optical lattices

Chunlei Qu, Ming Gong, Yong Xu +2 more

We study Majorana fermions (MFs) in quasi-one dimensional (quasi-1D) and higher-dimensional fermionic optical lattices with a strictly 1D spin-orbit coupling, which has already been realized in cold atom experiments. We show that when the superfluid order parameters are homogeneous and are enforced to be identical along different chains, there are multiple MFs at each end with or without an experimentally tunable in-plane Zeeman field ${V}_{y}$. For ${V}_{y}=0$ the multiple MFs are topologically protected by a chiral symmetry; however, for ${V}_{y}\ensuremath{\ne}0$ the existence of multiple MFs is related to the peculiar spectrum properties of the system despite the broken chiral symmetry. In the generalization to higher dimensions, the multiple MFs form a zero-energy flat band. Furthermore, when the superfluid order parameters are solved self-consistently, the multiple MFs are usually destroyed because of the inhomogeneous order parameters of either Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (${V}_{y}=0$) type or Fulde-Ferrell (${V}_{y}\ensuremath{\ne}0$) type. Our results are useful to guide the experimentalists on searching for MFs in ultracold spin-orbit coupled fermionic superfluids.

ULTRACOLD QUANTUM GASES

Zixu Zhang

In this thesis, we discuss ultracold quantum gases both in continuum and optical lattices. For the continuum Fermi gases in BCS-BEC crossover, we present an effective field theory study on the recently discovered puzzling damping phenomena on the BCS side of the crossover. We find that in contrast to the previous proposed pair-breaking mechanism of damping, the damping process is due to the interaction between superfluid phonons and thermally excited fermionic quasi particles. Results from our effective field theory are compared quantitatively with experiments, showing a good agreement. For the ultracold fermionic atoms in optical lattices, we propose two novel quantum phases. Firstly, we show that a novel superconducting pairing occurs for spin-imbalanced Fermi gases with the spin up and down Fermi levels lying within the px- and s- orbital bands of a quasi-one-dimensional optical lattice. The pairs condense at a finite momentum equal to the sum of the two Fermi momenta of spin up and down fermions, and form a p-orbital condensate. The phase diagram shows that the p-orbital pair condensate occurs in a wide range of fillings. Secondly, we study instabilities of single-species fermionic atoms in the p-orbital bands in two-dimensional square optical lattices. From the nearly-perfect nesting Fermi surfaces, charge density wave and orbital density wave orderings with stripe or checkerboard patterns are found for attractive and repulsive interactions, respectively. The superconducting phase, usually expected of attractively interacting fermions, is strongly suppressed. We also use field theory to analyze the possible liquid crystal phases in our system. For bosons, we study ultracold bosonic atoms loaded in a one-dimensional optical lattice of two-fold p-orbital degeneracy at each site, and find an anti-ferro-orbital, a homogeneous px Mott insulator phase and two kinds of superfluid phases distinguished by the orbital ordering.
