EFFECTIVE INTERACTIONS OF PLANAR FERMIONS IN A STRONG MAGNETIC FIELD-THE EFFECT OF LANDAU LEVEL MIXING

Abstract

We obtain expressions for the current operator in the lowest Landau level (L.L.L.) field theory, where higher Landau level mixing due to various external and interparticle interactions is sytematically taken into account. We consider the current operators in the presence of electromagnetic interactions, both Coulomb and time-dependent, as well as local four-fermi interactions. The importance of Landau level mixing for long-range interactions is especially emphasized. We also calculate the edge-current for a finite sample.

Fractional quantum Hall effect in the second Landau level: The importance of inter-composite-fermion interaction

Csaba Tőke, Michael R. Peterson, Gun Sang Jeon +1 more

Exact diagonalization of a two-dimensional electron gas in a strong magnetic field in the disk geometry shows that there exists a filling-factor range in the second Landau level where the states significantly differ from those in the lowest Landau level. We show that the difference arises because the interaction between composite fermions is not negligible in higher Landau levels, as indicated by a substantial mixing between composite-fermion Landau-like levels, or $\ensuremath{\Lambda}$ levels. We find that the exact ground state is well reproduced by composite-fermion theory with $\ensuremath{\Lambda}$-level mixing incorporated at the lowest level of approximation. Using the same variational approach in the spherical geometry we estimate the excitation gap at filling $1∕3$ in the second Landau level (which corresponds to $7∕3$ of experiment).

Berry phase of the composite-fermion Fermi sea: Effect of Landau-level mixing

Songyang Pu, Mikael Fremling, Jainendra K. Jain

We construct explicit lowest-Landau-level wave functions for the composite-fermion Fermi sea and its low-energy excitations following a recently developed approach [Pu, Wu, and Jain, Phys. Rev. B 96, 195302 (2017)] and demonstrate them to be very accurate representations of the Coulomb eigenstates. We further ask how the Berry phase associated with a closed loop around the Fermi circle, predicted to be $\ensuremath{\pi}$ in a Dirac composite fermion theory satisfying particle-hole symmetry [D. T. Son, Phys. Rev. X 5, 031027 (2015)], is affected by Landau-level mixing. For this purpose, we consider a simple model wherein we determine the variational ground state as a function of Landau-level mixing within the space spanned by two basis functions: the lowest-Landau-level projected and the unprojected composite-fermion Fermi sea wave functions. We evaluate Berry phase for a path around the Fermi circle within this model following a recent prescription, and find that it rotates rapidly as a function of Landau-level mixing. We also consider the effect of a particle-hole symmetry-breaking three-body interaction on the Berry phase while confining the Hilbert space to the lowest Landau level. Our study deepens the connection between the $\ensuremath{\pi}$ Berry phase and the exact particle-hole symmetry in the lowest Landau level.

Exact polaron-polaron interactions between heavy impurities in a quantum Hall fluid

Jia Wang, Xia-Ji Liu, Hui Hu

We present an exact solution for effective polaron-polaron interactions between heavy impurities, mediated by a sea of noninteracting light fermions in the quantum Hall regime with highly degenerate Landau levels. For weak attraction between impurities and fermions, where only the manifold of lowest Landau levels is relevant, we obtain an analytical expression of mediated polaron-polaron interactions. Remarkably, polaron interactions are exactly zero when fermions in the lowest Landau levels outnumber heavy impurities. For strong attraction, different manifolds of higher Landau levels come into play and we derive a set of equations that can be used to numerically solve the mediated polaron interaction potential. We find that the potential vanishes when the distance R between impurities is larger than the magnetic length, but strongly diverges at short range following a Coulomb form − 1 / R . Our exact results of polaron-polaron interactions might be examined in cold-atom setups, where a system of Fermi polarons in the quantum Hall regime is realized with a synthetic gauge field or under fast rotation. Our predictions could also be useful to understand the effective interaction between exciton-polarons in electron-doped semiconductors under strong magnetic field.

Effect of the Landau Level Mixing on the Ground State of Two-Dimensional Electrons

D. Yoshioka

Two dimensional electrons in a strong magnetic field show the fractional quantum Hall effect at low temperatures. This effect is explained successfully by a discovery of a new liquid type ground state. However the infinitely strong magnetic field has been assumed in existing theories. Here the ground state around one third filling of the lowest Landau level is investigated at a finite magnetic field by numerical diagonalization of the Hamiltonian. When the cyclotron energy is not too small compared to a typical Coulomb energy, no qualitative change of the ground state is found: A natural generalization of the liquid state at the infinite magnetic field describes the ground state. Excitation energies of quasiparticles decrease as the magnetic field decreases.

Behavior of fractional quantum Hall states in LLL and 1LL with in-plane magnetic field and Landau level mixing: A numerical investigation

Lin-Peng Yang, Qi Li, Zi-Xiang Hu

By exactly solving the effective two-body interaction for two-dimensional electron system with layer thickness and an in-plane magnetic field, we recently found that the effective interaction can be described by the generalized pseudopotentials (PPs) without the rotational symmetry. With this pseudopotential description, we numerically investigate the behavior of the fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states both in the lowest Landau level (LLL) and first Landau level (1LL). The enhancements of the 7/3 FQH state on the 1LL for a small tilted magnetic field are observed when layer thickness is larger than some critical values. While the gap of the 1/3 state in the LLL monotonically reduced with increasing the in-plane field. From the static structure factor calculation, we find that the systems are strongly anisotropic and finally enter into a stripe phase with a large tilting. With considering the Landau level mixing correction on the two-body interaction, we find the strong LL mixing cancels the enhancements of the FQH states in the 1LL.

Real Space Effective Interaction and Phase Transition in the Lowest Landau Level

Naokazu Shibata, D. Yoshioka

The transition between the stripe state and the liquid state in a high magnetic field is studied by the density-matrix renormalization-group (DMRG) method. Systematic analysis on the ground state of two-dimensional electrons in the lowest Landau level shows that the transition from the stripe state to the liquid state at v=3/8 is caused by a reduction of repulsive interaction around r=3. The same reduction of the interaction also stabilizes the incompressible liquid states at v=1/3 and 2/5, which shows a similarity between the two liquid states at v=3/8 and 1/3. It is also shown that the strong short-range interaction around r=1 in the lowest Landau level makes qualitatively different stripe correlations compared with that in higher Landau levels.
