Boundary Quantum Field Theories with Infinite Resonance States

Abstract

We extend a recent work by Mussardo and Penati on integrable quantum field theories with a single stable particle and an infinite number of unstable resonance states, including the presence of a boundary. The corresponding scattering and reflection amplitudes are expressed in terms of Jacobian elliptic functions, and generalize the ones of the massive thermal Ising model and of the Sinh-Gordon model. In the case of the generalized Ising model we explicitly study the ground state energy and the one-point function of the thermal operator in the short-distance limit, finding an oscillating behaviour related to the fact that the infinite series of boundary resonances does not decouple from the theory even at very short-distance scales. The analysis of the generalized Sinh-Gordon model with boundary reveals an interesting constraint on the analytic structure of the reflection amplitude. The roaming limit procedure which leads to the Ising model, in fact, can be consistently performed only if we admit that the nature of the bulk spectrum uniquely fixes the one of resonance states on the boundary.

TOWARDS THE CONSTRUCTION OF WIGHTMAN FUNCTIONS OF INTEGRABLE QUANTUM FIELD THEORIES

H. Babujian, M. Karowski

The purpose of the "bootstrap program" for integrable quantum field theories in 1+1 dimensions is to construct a model in terms of its Wightman functions explicitly. In this article, the program is mainly illustrated in terms of the sine-Gordon and the sinh-Gordon model and (as an exercise) the scaling Ising model. We review some previous results on sine-Gordon breather form factors and quantum operator equations. The problem to sum over intermediate states is attacked in the short distance limit of the two point Wightman function for the sinh-Gordon and the scaling Ising model.

Reflecting boundaries and massless factorized scattering in two dimensions

João Nuno Prata

This thesis is concerned with two-dimensional models that are integrable in the presence of a boundary and whose spectrum in the bulk is constituted of massless particles. Although there is already a vast literature on the subject (e.g. Kondo and Callan-Rubakov models), the common minimal denominator in all these situations is the fact that the bulk theory is conformal invariant and it is the boundary that is responsible for the broken scale invariance. Here, our purpose is to consider the alternative situation, where the boundary respects the conformal invariance of the theory and the renormalization group trajectory is controlled by a bulk perturbation. The model in question is the principal chiral model at level k = 1. We propose the set of permissible boundary conditions suggested by the symmetries of the problem and compute the corresponding minimal reflection matrices. For one of the boundary conditions we compute the boundary ground state energy and the boundary entropy using the technique of boundary thermodynamic Bethe ansatz. In the infrared limit our results are shown to be in complete agreement with the predictions of the boundary conformal field theory approach. Finally, we consider the classical supersymmetric Liouville theory on the half-line and compute the boundary conditions compatible with the superconformal invariance. We construct an infinite set of commuting integrals of motion using Lax-pair techniques and discuss some aspects of the quantum theory as well as its relation to the super Korteweg-de Vries equation.

Variational Method in Quantum Field Theory

Arthur Hutsalyuk, Márton Lájer, Giuseppe Mussardo +1 more

We develop a variational framework for addressing two-dimensional non-integrable quantum field theories through the exact structure of their integrable counterparts. Concentrating on the $\varphi^4$ Landau-Ginzburg model, we use the analytical Vacuum Expectation Values and Form Factors of local operators in the sinh-Gordon theory as the foundation of a variational ansatz. In this way, we obtain controlled estimates of central physical quantities of the $\varphi^4$ theory - such as the finite-volume ground-state energy and the physical mass as a function of the coupling constant. The strengths of the variational methods are leveraged in combination with the Hamiltonian truncation techniques and the LeClair-Mussardo formula, which also allow to probe the accuracy of the variational approximation varying the system size. Within the weak-coupling regime, a detailed numerical analysis reveals the behaviour of the finite-volume spectrum, the ground-state energy, and the elastic part of the scattering matrix, showing how the rigorous machinery of integrable models can serve as a guiding light into the complex landscape of non-integrable quantum field dynamics.

Boundary Field Theory

Giuseppe Mussardo

Abstract Quantum field theory with boundaries is a very rich subject both from purely theoretical point of view or applicative aims. Chapter 21 presents the basis results relative to critical systems and massive integrable field theories. It covers stress-energy tensor in boundary conformal field theories and integrable deformations of these theories (including the single Virasoro algebra), reflection amplitudes, conformal boundary operators and states (including the Hilbert space and Ishibashi state), non-renormalizable states of the Hilbert space, operator product expansion involving a boundary operator, massive integrable boundary field theory, the massive boundary Ising model, boundary magnetic fields and correlation functions.

Topics in 2D integrable field theories with boundary interactions

Sergei Skorik

We study different aspects of integrable boundary quantum field theories, focusing mostly on the ``boundary sine-Gordon model'' and its applications to condensed matter physics. The first part of the review deals with formal problems. We analyze the classical limit and perform semi-classical quantization. We show that the non-relativistic limit corresponds to the Calogero-Moser model with a boundary potential. We construct a lattice regularization of the problem via the XXZ chain. We classify boundary bound states. We generalize the Destri de Vega method to compute the ground state energy of the theory on a finite interval. The second part deals with some applications to condensed matter physics. We show how to compute analytically time and space dependent correlations in one-dimensional quantum integrable systems with an impurity. Our approach is based on a description of these systems in terms of massless scattering of quasiparticles. Correlators follow then from matrix elements of local operators between multiparticle states -- the massless form-factors. Although, in general an infinite sum of these form-factors has to be considered, we find that for the current, spin and energy operators only a few (two or three) are necessary to obtain an accuracy of more than 1\%. Our results hold for arbitrary impurity strength, in contrary to the perturbative expansions in the coupling constants. As an example, we compute the frequency dependent condunctance, at zero temperature, in a Luttinger liquid with an impurity, and also discuss the susceptibility in the Kondo model and the time-dependent properties of the two-state problem with dissipation.
