ENTANGLEMENT ENTROPY FROM SURFACE TERMS IN GENERAL RELATIVITY

Abstract

Entanglement entropy in local quantum field theories is typically ultraviolet divergent due to short distance effects in the neighborhood of the entangling region. In the context of gauge/gravity duality, we show that surface terms in general relativity are able to capture this entanglement entropy. In particular, we demonstrate that for 1+1-dimensional (1 + 1d) conformal field theories (CFTs) at finite temperature whose gravity dual is Banados-Teitelboim-Zanelli (BTZ) black hole, the Gibbons-Hawking-York term precisely reproduces the entanglement entropy which can be computed independently in the field theory.

Entanglement Entropy and TT¯ Deformation

William Donnelly, Vasudev Shyam

Quantum gravity in a finite region of spacetime is conjectured to be dual to a conformal field theory (CFT) deformed by the irrelevant operator TT[over ¯]. We test this conjecture with entanglement entropy, which is sensitive to ultraviolet physics on the boundary, while also probing the bulk geometry. We find that the entanglement entropy for an entangling surface consisting of two antipodal points on a sphere is finite and precisely matches the Ryu-Takayanagi formula applied to a finite region consistent with the conjecture of McGough et al. We also consider a one-parameter family of conical entropies, which are finite and verify a conjecture due to Dong. Since ultraviolet divergences are local, we conclude that the TT[over ¯] deformation acts as an ultraviolet cutoff on the entanglement entropy. Our results support the conjecture that the TT[over ¯]-deformed CFT is the holographic dual of a finite region of spacetime.

Entanglement Entropy at Finite Density from Extremal Black Holes

Brian G. Swingle

I compute the entanglement entropy of a strongly coupled 2+1d quantum field theory containing fermions at finite density using gauge/gravity duality. The dual geometry is an extremal black hole in 3+1d Einstein-Maxwell theory. This system was recently shown to exhibit non-Fermi liquid behavior, but the leading geometrical contribution to the entanglement entropy does not produce an expected violation of the boundary law. I discuss this negative result in the context of attempts to find highly entangled states of quantum matter.

Entanglement entropy of two-dimensional anti-de Sitter black holes

Mariano Cadoni

Using the AdS/CFT correspondence we derive a formula for the entanglement entropy of the anti-de Sitter black hole in two spacetime dimensions. The leading term in the large black hole mass expansion of our formula reproduces exactly the Bekenstein–Hawking entropy SBH, whereas the subleading term behaves as lnSBH. This subleading term has the universal form typical for the entanglement entropy of physical systems described by effective conformal fields theories (e.g. one-dimensional statistical models at the critical point). The well-known form of the entanglement entropy for a two-dimensional conformal field theory is obtained as analytic continuation of our result and is related with the entanglement entropy of a black hole with negative mass.

Vacuum entanglement and black hole entropy of gauge fields

William Donnelly

Black holes in general relativity carry an entropy whose value is given by the Bekenstein-Hawking formula, but whose statistical origin remains obscure. Such horizons also possess an entanglement entropy, which has a clear statistical meaning but no a priori relation to the dynamics of gravity. For free minimally-coupled scalar and spinor fields, these two quantities are intimately related: the entanglement entropy is the one-loop correction to the black hole entropy due to renormalization of Newton's constant. For gauge fields, the entanglement entropy and the one-loop correction to the black hole entropy differ. This dissertation addresses two issues concerning the entanglement entropy of gauge fields, and its relation black hole entropy. First, for abelian gauge fields Kabat identified a negative divergent contribution to the black hole entropy that is not part of the entanglement entropy, known as a ``contact term''. We show that the contact term can be attributed to an ambiguous expression for the gauge field's contribution to the Wald entropy. Moreover, in two-dimensional de Sitter space, the contact term arises from an incorrect treatment of zero modes and is therefore unphysical. In a manifestly gauge-invariant reduced phase space quantization of two-dimensional gauge theory, the gauge field contribution to the entropy is positive, finite, and equal to the entanglement entropy. This suggests that the contact term in more than two dimensions may also be unphysical. Second, we consider lattice gauge theory and point out that the Hilbert space corresponding to a region of space includes edge states that transform nontrivially under gauge transformations. By decomposing these edge states in irreducible representations of the gauge group, the entanglement entropy of an arbitrary state is shown to be a sum of a bulk entropy and a boundary entropy associated to the edge states. This entropy formula agrees with the two-dimensional results from the reduced phase space quantization. These results are applied to several examples, including the ground state in the strong coupling expansion of Kogut and Susskind, and the entropy of the edge states is found to be the dominant contribution to the entanglement entropy.

Entanglement entropy of extremal BTZ black holes

Paweł Caputa, Vishnu Jejjala, Hesam Soltanpanahi

In this paper, we use entanglement entropy as a tool to explore the universal properties of conformal field theories (CFTs) dual to extremal BTZ black holes. We demonstrate that the entanglement entropies computed in the CFTs at the boundary of the extremal BTZ and the boundary of the near-horizon limit of the extremal BTZ are in perfect agreement and have the form appropriate to a two-dimensional CFT with only the chiral part excited and the antichiral in the ground state. Furthermore, we analyze the universal limits of the entanglement entropy and recover the correct value of the thermal entropy for large entangling intervals and the first-law-like relation for the small interval.
