Abstract

We present a conjecture for the exact expression of finite volume expectation values in excited states in integrable quantum field theories, which is an extension of an earlier conjecture to the case of general diagonal factorized scattering with bound states and a nontrivial bootstrap structure. The conjectured expression is a spectral expansion which uses the exact form factors and the excited state thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz as building blocks. The conjecture is proven for the case of the trace of the energy-moment tensor. Concerning its validity for more general operators, we provide numerical evidence using the truncated conformal space approach. It is found that the expansion fails to be well- defined for small values of the volume in cases when the singularity structure of the TBA equations undergoes a non-trivial rearrangement under some critical value of the volume. Despite these shortcomings, the conjectured expression is expected to be valid for all volumes for most of the excited states, and as an expansion above the critical volume for the rest.

On the finite volume expectation values of local operators in the sine-Gordon model

Árpád Hegedűs

In this paper we present sets of linear integral equations which make possible to compute the finite volume expectation values of the trace of the stress energy tensor (Θ) and the U ( 1 ) current ( J μ ) in any eigenstate of the Hamiltonian of the sine-Gordon model. The solution of these equations in the large volume limit allows one to get exact analytical formulas for the expectation values in the Bethe-Yang limit. These analytical formulas are used to test an earlier conjecture for the Bethe-Yang limit of expectation values in non-diagonally scattering theories. The analytical tests have been carried out upto three particle states and gave agreement with the conjectured formula, provided the definition of polarized symmetric diagonal form-factors is modified appropriately. Nevertheless, we point out that our results provide only a partial confirmation of the conjecture, and further investigations are necessary to confirm all of its subtleties. The most important missing piece in the confirmation is the mathematical proof of the finiteness of the symmetric diagonal limit of form-factors in a non-diagonally scattering theory.

Form factor approach to diagonal finite volume matrix elements in Integrable QFT

Balázs Pozsgay

We derive an exact formula for finite volume excited state mean values of local operators in 1+1 dimensional Integrable QFT with diagonal scattering. Our result is a non-trivial generalization of the LeClair-Mussardo series, which is a form factor expansion for finite size ground state mean values.

Quantum field theories in finite volume: Excited state energies

Vladimir V. Bazhanov, Sergei L. Lukyanov, Alexander B. Zamolodchikov

We develop a method of computing the excited state energies in Integrable Quantum Field Theories (IQFT) in finite geometry, with the spatial coordinate compactified on a circle of circumference R. The IQFT “commuting transfer matrices” introduced earlier [Commun. Math. Phys. 177 (1996) 381] for Conformal Field Theories (CFT) are generalized to non-conformal IQFT obtained by perturbing CFT with the operator Φ1,3. We study the models in which the fusion relations for these “transfer matrices” truncate and provide closed integral equations which generalize the equations of the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz to excited states. The explicit calculations are done for the first excited state in the “scaling Lee-Yang model”.

Excited state TBA and renormalized TCSA in the scaling Potts model

M. Lencsés, G. Takács

We consider the field theory describing the scaling limit of the Potts quantum spin chain using a combination of two approaches. The first is the renormalized truncated conformal space approach (TCSA), while the second one is a new thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz (TBA) system for the excited state spectrum in finite volume. For the TCSA we investigate and clarify several aspects of the renormalization procedure and counter term construction. The TBA system is first verified by comparing its ultraviolet limit to conformal field theory and the infrared limit to exact S matrix predictions. We then show that the TBA and the renormalized TCSA match each other to a very high precision for a large range of the volume parameter, providing both a further verification of the TBA system and a demonstration of the efficiency of the TCSA renormalization procedure. We also discuss the lessons learned from our results concerning recent developments regarding the low-energy scattering of quasi-particles in the quantum Potts spin chain.

Finite volume form factors and correlation functions at finite temperature

Balázs Pozsgay

In this thesis we investigate finite size effects in 1+1 dimensional integrable QFT. In particular we consider matrix elements of local operators (finite volume form factors) and vacuum expectation values and correlation functions at finite temperature. In the first part of the thesis we give a complete description of the finite volume form factors in terms of the infinite volume form factors (solutions of the bootstrap program) and the S-matrix of the theory. The calculations are correct to all orders in the inverse of the volume, only exponentially decaying (residual) finite size effects are neglected. We also consider matrix elements with disconnected pieces and determine the general rule for evaluating such contributions in a finite volume. The analytic results are tested against numerical data obtained by the truncated conformal space approach in the Lee-Yang model and the Ising model in a magnetic field. In a separate section we also evaluate the leading exponential correction (the $μ$-term) associated to multi-particle energies and matrix elements. In the second part of the thesis we show that finite volume factors can be used to derive a systematic low-temperature expansion for correlation functions at finite temperature. In the case of vacuum expectation values the series is worked out up to the third non-trivial order and a complete agreement with the LeClair-Mussardo formula is observed. A preliminary treatment of the two-point function is also given by considering the first nontrivial contributions.
