Abstract

The Kitaev model on the honeycomb lattice has been receiving substantial attention due to the discovery of quantum spin liquid state associated with this model. Consequently, its classical partners such as the Kitaev-Heisenberg (KH) model and associated phase transitions become concerned. Specifically, an intermediate Kosterlitz-Thouless (KT) phase engaged in the transition from the high-temperature (T) disordered state to the low-T sixfold degenerate state is predicted in the isotropic KH model [Phys. Rev. Lett. 109, 187201 (2012)10.1103/PhysRevLett.109.187201], but so far no sufficient experimental proof has been reported. In this work, we consider an essential extension of this KH model on the honeycomb lattice by including the Kitaev exchange anisotropy that is non-negligible in realistic materials. The associated phase transitions are thus investigated using the Monte Carlo simulations. It is found that such an anisotropy will result in a degradation of the sixfold degeneracy of the ground state in the isotropic KH model down to the fourfold or twofold degenerate ground state, and the finite-T phase transitions will also be modified remarkably. Interestingly, the intermediate KT phase can be suppressed by this Kitaev exchange anisotropy. This work thus provides a more realistic description of the physics ingredient with the KH model and presents a possible explanation on absence of the intermediate phase in real materials where the Kitaev exchange anisotropy can be more or less available.

Field-induced phase transitions in the Kitaev-Heisenberg model: A sign-problem-free quantum Monte Carlo study and possible application to α − RuCl 3

Xiangbin Zou, Shuo Liu, Wenan Guo +1 more

The frustrated magnet $\ensuremath{\alpha}\text{\ensuremath{-}}{\mathrm{RuCl}}_{3}$ is one of the prime candidates for realizing a Kitaev quantum spin liquid (QSL). However, the existence of a field-induced intermediate QSL phase in this material remains under debate. Here, we employ sign-free numerically exact quantum Monte Carlo simulations to investigate the Kitaev-Heisenberg (KH) model on the honeycomb lattice with $K=\ensuremath{-}2J$ under an applied magnetic field along the $z$ direction. Our findings reveal that the system undergoes a direct quantum phase transition from a zigzag magnetically ordered phase to a spin-polarized phase at zero temperature, which belongs to the 3D XY universality class. At finite temperatures, a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition line separates the spin-polarized phase from a quasi-long-range ordered state, eventually terminating at the quantum critical point. Our results convincingly show that there is no intermediate QSL phase in the KH model with a $z$-direction magnetic field, which we believe will shed important light on understanding experimental observations in $\ensuremath{\alpha}\text{\ensuremath{-}}{\mathrm{RuCl}}_{3}$.

Ordered states in the Kitaev-Heisenberg model: From 1D chains to 2D honeycomb

Cliò Efthimia Agrapidis, Jeroen van den Brink, Satoshi Nishimoto

Abstract We study the ground state of the 1D Kitaev-Heisenberg (KH) model using the density-matrix renormalization group and Lanczos exact diagonalization methods. We obtain a rich ground-state phase diagram as a function of the ratio between Heisenberg (J = cosϕ) and Kitaev (K = sinϕ) interactions. Depending on the ratio, the system exhibits four long-range ordered states: ferromagnetic-z, ferromagnetic-xy, staggered-xy, Néel-z, and two liquid states: Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid and spiral-xy. The two Kitaev points $${\boldsymbol{\phi }}{\boldsymbol{=}}\frac{{\boldsymbol{\pi }}}{{\bf{2}}}$$ ϕ=π2 and $${\boldsymbol{\varphi }}{\boldsymbol{=}}\frac{{\bf{3}}{\boldsymbol{\pi }}}{{\bf{2}}}$$ φ=3π2 are singular. Theϕ-dependent phase diagram is similar to that for the 2D honeycomb-lattice KH model. Remarkably, all the ordered states of the honeycomb-lattice KH model can be interpreted in terms of the coupled KH chains. We also discuss the magnetic structure of the K-intercalated RuCl3, a potential Kitaev material, in the framework of the 1D KH model. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the low-lying excitations of the 1D KH Hamiltonian can be explained within the combination of the known six-vertex model and spin-wave theory.

Critical Properties of the Kitaev-Heisenberg Model

Craig Price, Natalia Borisovna Perkins

We study the critical properties of the Kitaev-Heisenberg model on the honeycomb lattice at finite temperatures that might describe the physics of the quasi-two-dimensional compounds, Na(2)IrO(3) and Li(2)IrO(3). The model undergoes two phase transitions as a function of temperature. At low temperature, thermal fluctuations induce magnetic long-range order by the order-by-disorder mechanism. This magnetically ordered state with a spontaneously broken Z(6) symmetry persists up to a certain critical temperature. We find that there is an intermediate phase between the low-temperature, ordered phase and the high-temperature, disordered phase. Finite-sized scaling analysis suggests that the intermediate phase is a critical Kosterlitz-Thouless phase with continuously variable exponents. We argue that the intermediate phase has been observed above the low-temperature, magnetically ordered phase in Na(2)IrO(3), and also, likely exists in Li(2)IrO(3).

Simulation of Kosterlitz-Thouless (KT) Transition with Classical Monte-Carlo Simulation

Nepal Banerjee

Spontaneous symmetry breaking of 2D isotropic Heisenberg magnet is restricted by Mermin-Wagner theorem at any finite temperature in presence of short-range exchange interaction.Kosterlitz and Thouless using XY spin model showed that how an order state could developed in 2D spin system in presence of short range isotropic interaction.Very recent discovery of several van der waals magnet revised and redefined our understanding on 2D Heisenberg magnet and its ground state properties. After a rigorous and careful study of several 2D magnetic material we have realized from both experimentally and numerically that the finite size of a 2D system has great impact on the ground state symmetry breaking.Because of that finite size effect more often an anisotropic residual magnetic moment is generated and trigger the spontaneous symmetry breaking at finite temperature(T) and even only presence of short-range interaction we observed the phase transition of that Heisenberg spin system. In this present work we have shown the basic role of finite size, anisotropy during the symmetry breaking of 2D Heisenberg XY magnet. Here we have simulated Kosterlitz-Thouless transition using classical Monte-carlo simulation and study the effect of anisotropy during the phase transition. We presented the behaviour of different thermodynamic properties of 2D XY spin model system during the Kosterlitz-Thouless(KT) transition. The generic characteristic of KT transition which make it distinct from other critical phenomena is that the peak of heat capacity is not diverging with increase of system size rather peak is decreasing with the increasing of system size near at transition temperature. Here we are observing that behaviour in our present simulation and that specific behaviour help us for classifying the present transition as Kosterlitz-Thouless(KT) transition.

Stability of ordered and disordered phases in the Heisenberg-Kitaev model in a magnetic field

Pedro M. Cônsoli, Eric C. Andrade

Abstract The S = 1/2 Kitaev honeycomb model has attracted significant attention as an exactly solvable example with a quantum spin liquid ground state. In an properly oriented external magnetic field, the system exhibits chiral Majorana edge modes with an associated quantized thermal Hall conductance, and a distinct spin-disordered phase emerges at intermediate field strengths, below the polarized phase. However, since material realizations of Kitaev magnetism invariably display competing exchange interactions, the stability of these exotic phases with respect to additional couplings is a key issue. Here, we report a 24-site exact diagonalization study of the Heisenberg-Kitaev model in a magnetic field applied in the [001] and [111] directions. By mapping the full phase diagram of the model and contrasting the results to recent nonlinear spin-wave calculations, we show that both methods agree well, thus establishing that quantum corrections substantially modify the classical phase diagram. Furthermore, we find that, in a [111] field, the intermediate-field spin-disordered phase is remarkably stable to Heisenberg interactions and may potentially end in a novel quantum tricritical point.
