Abstract

We theoretically analyze the behavior of single optical bistability (OB), double OB, and tristability (OT) in a three-level V-type atomic system confined in a unidirectional optical ring cavity. The physics behind the emergence of various bistable and tristable states, and switching from the absorptive to the dispersive characteristics, are explored. The role of probe- and control-field detunings on the input-output characteristics is probed. Further, it is found that the switching between various bistable phenomena is defined by the ratio between the absolute peak values of the parameters describing dispersion and absorption, respectively. This ratio sets a criterion for obtaining absorptive OB, OT, double OB, and dispersive OB. The role of control-field intensity and detuning as well as the cooperation parameter on the input-output characteristics are explored. Finally, a scheme is discussed to control the width of the middle branch of double OB and OT as well as single OB.

Optical bistability and multistability via atomic coherence in an N -type atomic medium

Jiahua Li, Xin‐You Lü, Jing-Min Luo +1 more

We analyze hybrid absorptive-dispersive optical bistability (OB) and multistability (OM) behavior in a generic $N$-type atomic system driven by a degenerate probe field and a coherent coupling field by means of a unidirectional ring cavity. We show that the OB can be controlled by adjusting the intensity and the detuning of the coupling field, and the OM can also be observed under the appropriate detuning. The influence of the atomic cooperation parameter on atomic OB behavior is also discussed.

Controlling Optical Bistability and Multistability in a Three-level ∧-type Atomic System Under the Nonresonant Condition

Zhiping Wang

Under nonresonant condition,we theoretically investigate the optical bistability(OB) and multistability(OM) behaviors in a three-level ∧-type system using a microwave field driving a hyperfine transition between two lower states inside the unidirectional ring cavity. The results show that the optical bistability behavior can be controlled by adjusting the intensity and the frequency detuning of the coupling field, respectively. It is also found that the microwave field plays an important role in achieving the multistability. The influence of the atomic cooperation parameter on the OM behavior is discussed at last.

Double-cavity optical bistability and all-optical switching in four-level N-type atomic system

Yu-Yuan Chen, Yanan Li, Ren-Gang Wan

We analyze the absorptive and hybrid absorptive–dispersive double-cavity optical bistability behavior in a four-level N-type atomic system driven by two optical fields circulating inside two independently unidirectional ring cavities and a trigger field outside the cavities. In this system, the two-photon absorption and cross Kerr nonlinearity play significant roles in the formation of bistability and can be controlled efficiently due to the quantum interference effect, and then the resulting nonlinear behavior exhibits different features from the two/three-level schemes. It is shown that the threshold values and hysteresis cycle width of the bistable curve can be manipulated via the adjustment of the system parameters. Meanwhile, we also obtain double-beam optical multistability. When adding positive and negative pulses to the cavity input, all-optical steady-state switching for the two cavity outputs can be achieved simultaneously. Therefore, the proposed scheme may have potential applications in all-optical communication and computing.

Dynamic all-optical memory switching based on atomic optical bistable behavior in a three level Λ-type atomic system

Haiqiang He, Bixuan Fan, Min Xie

Abstract We theoretically investigate the atomic optical bistability (AOB) in a three-level Λ-type atomic system confined in a unidirectional optical ring cavity. The role of the intensity or detuning of the control field on AOB is explored, and results show that absorption, dispersion, and nonlinearity can be modified significantly by the control field due to quantum coherence and interference in multilevel atomic systems. Thus, tuning the intensity or detuning of the control field can manipulate the switch-up and switch-down thresholds, as well as the area of the bistable hysteresis loop. According to the controllability of AOB, we design various schemes to realize dynamical all-optical switching between the high and low outputs of two bistable curves for a fixed cavity input. In addition, dynamical all-optical memory switching can be implemented by adding a pulse sequence for the intensity or detuning of the control field. For appropriate parameters, such as the cooperative coefficient, the extinction ratio of the switching can be improved dramatically.

Controllable optical bistability and multistability in a V-type three-level atomic system interacting with two broadband independent squeezed baths

Abstract In this study, we investigate the optical bistability (OB) and optical multistability (OM) phenomena within a V-type three-level atomic system interacting with two independent broadband squeezed baths confined in a unidirectional cavity. Our analysis reveals that the transition between OB and OM is influenced by the strength of the control field and the intensity of the squeezed vacuum. Notably, the impact of each of these factors on the transition exhibits distinct characteristics. Furthermore, we explore the effects of additional system parameters, such as the incoherent pumping rate and cooperation parameter. Our findings emphasize the crucial roles played by these parameters in shaping the observed results. Specifically, we observe that variations in the incoherent pumping rate and cooperation parameter contribute significantly to the system’s OB and OM behavior, further underscoring the multifaceted nature of the studied atomic system. This comprehensive investigation not only elucidates the intricate interplay between key parameters but also unveils the sensitivity of the system to variations in control field strength, intensity of the squeezed vacuum, incoherent pumping rate, and cooperation parameter.

Controllable Optical Bistability and Multistability in a Four-Level Atomic System with Closed-Loop Configuration

Xin‐You Lü, Jiahua Li, Ji-Bing Liu

We theoretically investigate optical bistability (OB) and multistability (OM) behaviour of a closed-loop configuration atomic system driven by a degenerate coupling field and a degenerate probe field inside a unidirectional ring cavity. It is found that the OB and OM behaviour can be controlled by adjusting the intensity and the frequency detuning of the coupling field, respectively. Interestingly, our numerical results show that it is easy to realize the transition from OB to OM or vice versa by adjusting the intensity of the coupling field under a appropriate frequency detuning. The effect of the atomic cooperation parameter on the OB behaviour is also discussed.
