Abstract

Using finite-temperature determinantal quantum Monte Carlo calculations, we find that the dominant pairing symmetries in the standard Hubbard model on the honeycomb lattice depend on the electron filling. When the electron density $\ensuremath{\rho}$ is larger than around 0.25, the dominant pairing symmetry is the $d+id$-wave; when the electron density is low enough ($\ensuremath{\rho}\ensuremath{\lesssim}0.25$), the dominant pairing symmetry is the $p+ip$ wave. For two electron densities $\ensuremath{\rho}=0.1$ and $\ensuremath{\rho}=0.4$, where the dominant pairing symmetries are $p+ip$ wave and $d+id$ wave separately, we study the effect of two types of hopping inhomogeneities (the plaquette and the quasi-$1\mathrm{D}$ hopping inhomogeneities) on the pairing symmetries. For $\ensuremath{\rho}=0.1$, the plaquette hopping inhomogeneity drives the dominant $p+ip$-wave pairing symmetry into the $d+id$-wave; while the quasi-$1\mathrm{D}$ hopping inhomogeneity almost does not affect the $p+ip$ wave, and arises the $f$ wave, causing the coexistence of $p+ip$-wave and $f$-wave pairing. For $\ensuremath{\rho}=0.4$, both the plaquette and the quasi-$1\mathrm{D}$ hopping inhomogeneities destroy the $d+id$-wave pairing symmetry, without causing other pairing symmetry. Our results suggest that the effect of hopping inhomogeneity on the pairing symmetries is robust and depends on the electron filling. This finding may be useful for the design of artificial graphene superconductors with different kinds of pairing, especially for the realization of the $d+id$-wave, $p+ip$-wave, or $f$-wave superconductors at low filling.

Pairing and chiral spin density wave instabilities on the honeycomb lattice: A comparative quantum Monte Carlo study

Tao Ying, Stefan Weßel

Using finite-temperature determinantal quantum Monte Carlo calculations, we reexamine the pairing susceptibilities in the Hubbard model on the honeycomb lattice, focusing on doping levels onto and away from the Van Hove singularity (VHS) filling. For this purpose, electronic densities of 0.75 (at the hole-doping VHS) and 0.4 (well below the VHS) are considered in detail, where due to a severe sign problem at strong coupling strengths, we focus on the weak-interaction region of the Hubbard model Hamiltonian. By analyzing the temperature dependence of pairing susceptibilities in various symmetry channels, we find the singlet $d+id$ wave to be the dominant pairing channel both at and away from the VHS filling. We furthermore investigate the electronic susceptibility to a specific chiral spin density wave (SDW) order, which we find to be similarly relevant at the VHS, while it extenuates upon doping away from the VHS filling.

Quantum Monte Carlo study of the dominating pairing symmetry in doped honeycomb lattice*

Xingchuan Zhu, Tao Ying, Huaiming Guo +1 more

We perform a systematic determinant quantum Monte Carlo (DQMC) study of the dominating pairing symmetry in a doped honeycomb lattice. The Hubbard model is simulated over a full range of filling levels for both weak and strong interactions. For weak couplings, the d-wave state dominates. The effective susceptibility as a function of filling shows a peak, and its position moves toward half filling as the temperature is increased, from which the optimal filling of the superconducting ground state is estimated. Although the sign problem becomes severe for strong couplings, the simulations access the lowest temperature at which the DQMC method generates reliable results. As the coupling is strengthened, the d-wave state is enhanced in the high-filling region. Our systematic DQMC results provide new insights into the superconducting pairing symmetry in the doped honeycomb lattice.

Quantum Monte Carlo study of the Hubbard model with next-nearest-neighbor hopping t ′: pairing and magnetism

Shuhui Yang, Tao Ying, Weiqi Li +3 more

Using the finite-temperature determinant quantum Monte Carlo (DQMC) algorithm, we study the pairing symmetries of the Hubbard Hamiltonian with next-nearest-neighbor (NNN) hopping t' on square lattices. By varying the value of t', we find that the d-wave pairing is suppressed by the onset of t', while the p + ip-wave pairing tends to emerge for low electron density and t' around -0.7. Together with the calculation of the anti-ferromagnetic and ferromagnetic spin correlation function, we explore the relationship between anti-ferromagnetic order and the d-wave pairing symmetry, and the relationship between ferromagnetic order and the p + ip-wave pairing symmetry. Our results may be useful for the exploration of the mechanism of the electron pairing symmetries, and for the realization of the exotic p + ip-wave superconductivity.

Ground state superconducting pair correlations in twisted bilayer graphene

Lufeng Zhang, Tongyun Huang, Ying Liang +1 more

Motivated by the recent novel electronic features extracted from the magic-angle graphene superlattices, we studied the ground state superconducting pairing correlations within the Hubbard model on a twisted bilayer honeycomb lattice. Using Constrained-Path Quantum Monte Carlo method, we found that the [Formula: see text] pairing correlation dominates over other pairing patterns among various electron fillings and interaction strengths, and the effective pairing interaction was enhanced as the on-site Coulomb interaction increased. We further examined the effect of the nearest neighbor interaction [Formula: see text], and the effective pairing interaction with [Formula: see text] pairing symmetry was also enhanced by either a repulsive or attractive interaction. Our intensive numerical results confirm the interaction driven superconductivity with a dominant [Formula: see text] pairing symmetry in twisted bilayer graphene.

Attractive Hubbard model on a honeycomb lattice: Quantum Monte Carlo study

Kean Loon Lee, Karim Bouadim, G. G. Batrouni +4 more

We study the attractive fermionic Hubbard model on a honeycomb lattice using determinantal quantum Monte Carlo simulations. By increasing the interaction strength $U$ (relative to the hopping parameter $t$) at half filling and zero temperature, the system undergoes a quantum phase transition at $5.0<{U}_{c}/t<5.1$ from a semimetal to a phase displaying simultaneously superfluid behavior and density order. Doping away from half filling, and increasing the interaction strength at finite but low temperature $T$, the system always appears to be a superfluid exhibiting a crossover between a BCS and a molecular regime. These different regimes are analyzed by studying the spectral function. The formation of pairs and the emergence of phase coherence throughout the sample are studied as $U$ is increased and $T$ is lowered.

Pairing in graphene: A quantum Monte Carlo study

Tianxing Ma, Zhongbing Huang, Feiming Hu +1 more

To address the issue of electron correlation driven superconductivity in graphene, we perform a systematic quantum Monte Carlo study of the pairing correlation in the $t\ensuremath{-}U\ensuremath{-}V$ Hubbard model on a honeycomb lattice. For $V=0$ and close to half filling, we find that pairing with $d+id$ (${d}_{{x}^{2}\ensuremath{-}{y}^{2}}+i{d}_{xy}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ in its specific form) symmetry dominates pairing with extended-$s$ symmetry. However, as the system size or the on-site Coulomb interaction increases, the long-range part of the $d+id$ pairing correlation decreases and tends to vanish in the thermodynamic limit. An inclusion of nearest-neighbor interaction $V$, either repulsive or attractive, has a small effect on the extended-$s$ pairing correlation, but strongly suppresses the $d+id$ pairing correlation.
