The spectroscopic correspondence principle for the time evolution of quantum transitions under the action of electromagnetic pulses

Abstract

Abstract This work is dedicated to the generalization of the spectroscopic correspondence principle to the time dependence of the evolution of a dipole-allowed quantum transition in a two-level system (TLS) under the action of an electromagnetic pulse (EMP). The formulas for the time dependence of the absorbed EMP energy for excitation of a classical oscillator and an oscillator of a transition in a TLS are derived within the framework of the first order of perturbation theory. It is shown that in the case of zero width of a transition line (or in case of zero damping constant γ for a classical oscillator) classical and quantum approaches give the same results for arbitrary EMP parameters (duration and carrier frequency). A noticeable distinction between the time dependences of the absorbed energy for a classical oscillator and a quantum TLS with a Lorentz spectral profile is observed for sufficiently long pulses.

Absorption of Ultrashort Electromagnetic Pulses on Broadened Dipole Transitions

S. Yu. Svita, Valery Alexandrovich Astapenko

The study is devoted to the theoretical analysis of ultrashort electromagnetic pulses (USP) absorption on broadened dipole transitions. Calculations are made in the frame of perturbation theory with the use of the basic formula for energy absorbed during all time of the action of USP on dipole transition. Dependences of absorbed energy upon pulse duration and carrier frequency are obtained and analyzed for different types of spectral line shape and USP parameters.

Dynamics of Time Evolution of Quantum Oscillator Excitation by Electromagnetic Pulses

Valery Alexandrovich Astapenko, FRANK B. ROSMEJ, Evgeniya V. Sakhno

Abstract The dynamics of time evolution of quantum oscillator excitation by electromagnetic pulses is investigated theoretically for an arbitrary field amplitude in a pulse. We consider a harmonic oscillator without damping and excitation between stationary states. The general formula for the excitation of quantum states as a function of time is derived in terms of instantaneous energy of an associated classical oscillator in the field of an electromagnetic pulse. The derived expression is used in detailed analysis of the time dependence of the quantum oscillator excitation probability beyond the range of perturbation theory for various pulse parameters including total excitation from the ground state, excitation from excited states, and excitation spectra.

Time-dependent theory of three-step absorption of three light pulses; pp. 54–63

Inna Rebane

The time-dependent theory of the three-step absorption of three different light pulses in the electronic four-level systems is considered using the time-dependent perturbation theory. The first, the second, and the third pulse are in resonance with transitions from level 0 to level 1, from level 1 to level 2, and from level 2 to level 3, respectively. The spectral and temporal behaviour of the probability that the fourth level is excited at the moment of time t depends on the energy relaxation constants of the excited electronic levels, the frequencies of the maxima, the spectral widths (and so the durations) of the light pulses, and the time delays between the pulses. To conclude, there are 12 parameters that affect the spectra in the simple model used. We calculate and analyse the case where the frequencies of the maxima of the first and the second pulse are fixed and the frequency of the maximum of the third pulse varies. On the whole, three lines may exist, one of which corresponds to the coherent contribution and the others do not.

Time dependence of quantum oscillator excitation by electromagnetic pulses

Valery Alexandrovich Astapenko, FRANK B. ROSMEJ, Evgeniya V. Sakhno

The paper is devoted to the theoretical investigation of time dependences of quantum oscillator excitation by electromagnetic pulses for arbitrary values of field amplitude in the pulse. We consider the harmonic oscillator without relaxation and excitation between stationary states. The general formula for excitation of quantum states as function of time is derived in terms of instant energy of associated classical oscillator in the field of electromagnetic pulse. Thus, it is established that time dependence of quantum oscillator excitation is completely determined by the energy of the associated classical oscillator at given moment of time. Using derived expression time dependence of quantum oscillator excitation is investigated in details including total excitation from ground state, excitation from excited states, total excitation probability and corresponding excitation spectra.

Pulsed excitation of a quantum oscillator: A model accounting for damping

Valery Alexandrovich Astapenko, Timur Bergaliyev, Sergey V. Sakhno

Abstract This article proposes a model that accounts for damping of a quantum oscillator (QO) during pulsed excitation. Our model is based on the Schwinger formula, which calculates oscillator’s excitation probability through the energy of an associated classical damped oscillator. We utilize this model to describe the influence of damping on temporal and spectral dependences of QO excitation, induced by electromagnetic pulses with exponential and double exponential envelopes. The oscillator excitation is analyzed in terms of transition probability between stationary states after pulse termination. Here, we present an analytical description of these dependences, along with numerical results. Specifically, we derive analytical expressions that depict the saturation effect during pulsed excitation, taking into account the damping of a QO. The evolution of the temporal dependence of the excitation probability with a change in the damping constant is numerically traced. We demonstrate that the number of maxima in this dependence is determined by the values of pulse parameters and the damping constant.

Time-dependent Spectrum in Quantum Theory of Stimulated Raman Scattering from a Two-level System

K. Grygiel, S. Kielich

The time-dependent (physical) spectrum of stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) from a two-level system is calculated, proving the influence of the spectral width Γ of the detector on the obtained spectral line shape. In addition, the time evolution of the process leading to the Raman line is investigated. For a partially excited system, the scattered field intensity exhibits oscillations in time, and Γ is found to affect the amplitude of the oscillations in the Raman line intensity. A numerical analysis of the result is performed for the case of monochromatic external fields.
