Bistability, optical regenerative oscillations, and chaos in an integrated acoustooptic device

Optical bistability experiments have been performed using an integrated acoustooptic modulator by making use of a surface acoustic-wave delay line in the feedback loop. Different experimental results are reported, including optical hysteresis, differential gain, and oscillatory behaviour. Possible modifications of the acoustooptic integrated bistable device are also proposed.

The transition to chaos is of current interest throughout physics. Among systems exhibiting chaos, optically bistable devices merit special attention for basic simplicity–and they may be quantizable.

Bistability, instability and chaos in nonlinear optical systems

Ekpekpo

The main schemes of optical bistability and phase conjugation is review with particular emphasis on the instabilities and routes to chaos that occur there. Their impact on the performances of nonlinear optical devices is discussed.
