Abstract

Frequency-bin qudits constitute a promising tool for quantum information processing. Here we use compressive sensing to characterize the spectral correlations of entangled photon pairs in a quantum frequency comb, obtaining a 26-fold reduction in measurement time compared to raster scanning.

Efficient compressive and Bayesian characterization of biphoton frequency spectra

Emma M. Simmerman, H.-H. Lu, Andrew M. Weiner +1 more

Frequency-bin qudits constitute a promising tool for quantum information processing, but their high dimensionality can make for tedious characterization measurements. Here we introduce and compare compressive sensing and Bayesian mean estimation for recovering the spectral correlations of entangled photon pairs. Using a conventional compressive sensing algorithm, we reconstruct joint spectra with up to a 26-fold reduction in measurement time compared to the equivalent raster scan. Applying a custom Bayesian model to the same data, we then additionally realize reliable and consistent quantification of uncertainty. These efficient methods of biphoton characterization should advance our ability to use the high degree of parallelism and complexity afforded by frequency-bin encoding.

Toward quantum networking with frequency-bin qudits

Karthik V. Myilswamy, Suparna Seshadri, Hsuan‐Hao Lu +4 more

Quantum networking holds tremendous promise in transforming computation and communication. Entangled-photon sources are critical for quantum repeaters and networking, while photonic integrated circuits are vital for miniaturization and scalability. In this talk, we focus on generating and manipulating frequency-bin entangled states within integrated platforms. We encode quantum information as a coherent superposition of multiple optical frequencies; this approach is favorable due to its amenability to high-dimensional entanglement and compatibility with fiber transmission. We successfully generate and measure the density matrix of biphoton frequency combs from integrated silicon nitride microrings, fully reconstructing the state in an 8 × 8 two-qudit Hilbert space, the highest so far for frequency bins. Moreover, we employ Vernier electro-optic phase modulation methods to perform time-resolved measurements of biphoton correlation functions. Currently, we are exploring bidirectional pumping of microrings to generate indistinguishable entangled pairs in both directions, aiming to demonstrate key networking operations such as entanglement swapping and Greenberger–Horne–Zeilinger state generation in the frequency domain.

We propose and analyze the use of linear, time-variant cavities to spectrally compress broadband frequency-correlated photon pairs into combs of spectrally pure biphotons. Our approach relies on rapid switching of input coupling to the cavity.
