Abstract

The main aim of this work is to build unitary phase operators and the corresponding temporally stable phase states for the [Formula: see text] Lie algebra. We first introduce an irreducible finite-dimensional Hilbertian representation of the [Formula: see text] Lie algebra which is suitable for our purpose. The phase operators obtained from the [Formula: see text] generators are defined and the phase states are derived as eigenstates associated to these unitary phase operators. The special cases of [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] Lie algebras are also explicitly investigated.

A fully consistent Lie algebraic representation of quantum phase and number operators

Mario Rasetti

A fully consistent realization of the quantum operators corresponding to the canonically conjugate phase and number variables is proposed, resorting to the positive discrete series of the irreducible unitary representation of the Lie algebra su (1, 1) of the double covering group of SO ↑ (1, 2). The realization holds in subspace , the system Fock space minus the vacuum state. A possible way to extend it to the full space of states based on recourse to a dilated extension of Hilbert space is discussed.

Coherent states for the harmonic series irreducible representations of U(p,q). I. Unitary operator coherent states

C. Quesne

Unitary operator coherent states, as defined by Klauder (1963), Perelomov (1972) and Gilmore (1974), are considered for the harmonic series irreducible representations of U(p,q). Various properties of these states are reviewed, including their reproducing kernel and measure explicit forms, as well as the representation they lead to for the U(p,q) generators. Starting from a contraction of the su(p,q) Lie algebra, both Dyson and Holstein-Primakoff boson realisations of u(p,q) are obtained in terms of pq pairs of boson creation, annihilation operators and of the generators of a U(p)*U(q) intrinsic group. Such boson realisations are applied to determine the matrix elements of the U(p,q) generators between discrete bases classified according to the chain U(p,q) contains/implies U(p)*U(q). Finally, the isomorphism between so(4,2) and su(2,2) is employed to derive the corresponding properties of the SO(4,2) unitary operator coherent states for application in atomic physics.

Phase operators for SU(1,1): Application to the squeezed vacuum

Christopher C. Gerry

A phase-operator formalism is constructed for the Lie algebra of SU(1,1). Uncertainty relations, analogous to the usual number-phase relations, are also constructed. These relations are then evaluated for SU(1,1) coherent states, of which the squeezed-vacuum state of the electromagnetic field is an example. We argue that the new phase, in the case of single-mode fields, may be interpreted as the phase associated with the square of the field amplitude.

SU(2) and SU(1,1) algebra eigenstates: A unified analytic approach to coherent and intelligent states

Brif, C

We introduce the concept of algebra eigenstates which are defined for an arbitrary Lie group as eigenstates of elements of the corresponding complex Lie algebra. We show that this concept unifies different definitions of coherent states associated with a dynamical symmetry group. On the one hand, algebra eigenstates include different sets of Perelomov's generalized coherent states. On the other hand, intelligent states (which are squeezed states for a system of general symmetry) also form a subset of algebra eigenstates. We develop the general formalism and apply it to the SU(2) and SU(1,1) simple Lie groups. Complete solutions to the general eigenvalue problem are found in the both cases, by a method that employs analytic representations of the algebra eigenstates. This analytic method also enables us to obtain exact closed expressions for quantum statistical properties of an arbitrary algebra eigenstate. Important special cases such as standard coherent states and intelligent states are examined and relations between them are studied by using their analytic representations.
