Abstract

Rising concerns about the security of our data have made quantum cryptography a very active research field in recent years. Quantum cryptographic protocols promise everlasting security by exploiting distinctive quantum properties of nature. The most extensively implemented protocol is quantum key distribution (QKD), which enables secure communication between two users. The aim of this book is to introduce the reader to state-of-the-art QKD and illustrate its recent multi-user generalization: quantum conference key agreement. With its pedagogical approach that doesn’t disdain going into details, the book enables the reader to join in cutting-edge research on quantum cryptography.

Quantum Key Distribution in practice: The state of art

Mohamed Elboukhari, Abdelmalek Azizi, Mostafa Azizi

Since it was noted that quantum computers could break public key cryptosystems based on number theory, extensive studies have been undertaken on Quantum Key Distribution (QKD). QKD or Quantum Cryptography solves the key distribution problem by allowing the exchange of a cryptographic key between two remote parties with absolute security, guaranteed by the laws of physics. Actually, the progress of research in this field allows the implementation of Quantum Cryptography outside of laboratories. Efforts are made to exploit this technology in the existing communication networks and to improve the performance and reliability of the implemented technologies. The cryptosystems based on QKD are very promising and also the technology is improving more and more to fulfill requirements. In this paper, we provide a state-of-the-art of practical Quantum Cryptography by exposing the popular works and projects on QKD implementation.

Quantum key distribution protocols: A contemporary review

Priya C. Jaya, alias Jeyanthi K. Meena

Over the past few decades, cryptography has played a pivotal role in strengthening information security, introducing groundbreaking methods to safeguard data confidentiality and integrity. Among these innovations, quantum cryptography has emerged as a rapidly evolving discipline, addressing critical challenges associated with secure communication. One of its most significant contributions is Quantum Key Distribution (QKD), a robust framework for establishing secure cryptographic keys between legitimate parties. This paper offers a detailed technical review of QKD protocols developed over the last thirty years, analyzing the fundamental principles governing key generation through quantum mechanics and advanced encryption techniques. Furthermore, it explores the interdependencies among core QKD protocol elements, proposing enhancements to strengthen the cryptosystem. Quantitative evaluations of QKD protocols are presented, with particular emphasis on runtime performance. Additionally, this paper outlines a generalized model of each reviewed protocol, grounded in robust security principles.

Quantum Cryptography and Secret-Key Distillation

Gilles Van Assche

Quantum cryptography (or quantum key distribution) is a state-of-the-art technique that exploits properties of quantum mechanics to guarantee the secure exchange of secret keys. This 2006 text introduces the principles and techniques of quantum cryptography, setting it in the wider context of cryptography and security, with specific focus on secret-key distillation. The book starts with an overview chapter, progressing to classical cryptography, information theory (classical and quantum), and applications of quantum cryptography. The discussion moves to secret-key distillation, privacy amplification and reconciliation techniques, concluding with the security principles of quantum cryptography. The author explains the physical implementation and security of these systems, enabling engineers to gauge the suitability of quantum cryptography for securing transmission in their particular application. With its blend of fundamental theory, implementation techniques, and details of recent protocols, this book will be of interest to graduate students, researchers, and practitioners in electrical engineering, physics, and computer science.

Quantum Key Distribution for Secure Communications

Mahira Najeeb, Ammar Masood, Adnan Fazil

Data protection and information security have been the essence of communication in today's digital era. Authentication and secrecy of secure communication are achieved using key-based cryptographic primitives; the security of which significantly relies upon the underlying computationally complex mathematics. Moreover, these existing cryptographic primitives are considered to be non-deterministic on the basis of the existing computational capabilities. However, the considerable advancements in the development of quantum computers have significantly enhanced parallel computations; thereby, posing a great threat to these existing encryption primitives. Thus, in the future, the physical manifestation of a large successful quantum computer is likely to break all the existing public-key encryption algorithms in no time. This has led to a remarkable surge of interest in propelling quantum mechanics into existence; subsequently, leading cryptographers to research various viable domains to offer quantum-resistant secure communications. Resultantly, quantum cryptography/quantum key distribution has emerged as a futuristic replacement for classical cryptography as it offers unconditionally secure communication along with the inherent detection of any unintended user. Thus, keeping in view the significance of this relatively newer domain of cryptography, this research focuses on presenting a consolidated review of the various Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) protocols. A comparative analysis of the working mechanism of the prominent QKD protocols is presented along with an overview of the various emerging trends that have been proposed to optimize the implementational efficiency of the BB84 protocol.
