Phase transitions in the transverse-field Ising model

Abstract

Phase transitions in Ising models are a broadly studied subject within physics. In this thesis we will study the quantum mechanical transverse-field Ising model in order to determine analytical critical points for quantum phase transitions. This will be done by introducing the concept of fermionic operators and the Jordan-Wigner transformation.Hereafter it is possible to Fourier transform the transverse Ising Hamiltonian and derive an exact eigenenergy spectrum. With these eigenenergies it is possible to derive the condition(s) for which a phase transition can occur. This is done by looking when the eigenenergy solutions are equal to zero. This causes the system to become unstable and thus indicates a point of phase transition.Further in this thesis we will cover two different variations of the transverse-field Ising model which are the di-atomic transverse Ising chain and the frustrated Ising chain. The frustrated Ising chain will be a modification of the mono-atomic Ising chain where there is an extra interaction term introduced which will require an assumption of lowest order approximation of perturbation theory to solve analytically.I would like to thank Lars Fritz for the great learning experience as a physicist within my bachelor thesis.

Phase Transitions in the Transverse-field Ising Ladder

A.M. Rigas

In this thesis I have successfully recreated the results that describe the behavior of a transverse-field Ising chain. There is a phase transition when the parameter that controls the influence of the transverse field is one (that is: the factor in front of the transverse-field term and the interaction term are equally big). However, I could not determine exactly what the order parameter should be.\nThen for the transverse-field Ising ladder I have used perturbation theory in the parameter that controls the interaction between the chains. I have found that the phase transition doesn't change position, but that the ground state is a different state compared to the transverse-field Ising chain, when the transverse-field term is smaller than the interaction.

QUANTUM PHASE TRANSITIONS IN ALTERNATING TRANSVERSE ISING CHAINS

Oleg Derzhko

This chapter is devoted to a discussion of quantum phase transitions in regularly alternating spin-1/2 Ising chain in a transverse field. After recalling some generally-known topics of the classical (temperature-driven) phase transition theory and some basic concepts of the quantum phase transition theory I pass to the statistical mechanics calculations for a one-dimensional spin-1/2 Ising model in a transverse field, which is the simplest possible system exhibiting the continuous quantum phase transition. The essential tool for these calculations is the Jordan-Wigner fermionization. The latter technique being completed by the continued fraction approach permits to obtain analytically the thermodynamic quantities for a `slightly complicated' model in which the intersite exchange interactions and on-site fields vary regularly along a chain. Rigorous analytical results for the ground-state and thermodynamic quantities, as well as exact numerical data for the spin correlations computed for long chains (up to a few thousand sites) demonstrate how the regularly alternating bonds/fields effect the quantum phase transition. I discuss in detail the case of period 2, swiftly sketch the case of period 3 and finally summarize emphasizing the effects of periodically modulated Hamiltonian parameters on quantum phase transitions in the transverse Ising chain and in some related models.

Parity-Dependent Quantum Phase Transition in the Quantum Ising Chain in a Transverse Field

Daniel Sacco Shaikh, Maura Sassetti, Niccolò Traverso Ziani

Phase transitions- both in the classical and in the quantum version- are the perfect playground for appreciating universality at work. Indeed, the fine details become unimportant and a classification in very few universality classes is possible. Very recently, a striking deviation from this picture has been discovered: some antiferromagnetic spin chains with competing interactions show a different set of phase transitions depending on the parity of number of spins in the chain. The aim of this article is to demonstrate that the same behavior also characterizes the most simple quantum spin chain: the Ising model in a transverse field. By means of an exact solution based on a Wigner-Jordan transformation, we show that a first order quantum phase transition appears at zero applied field in the odd spin case, while it is not present in the even case. A hint of a possible physical interpretation is given by the combination of two fact: at the point of the phase transition, the degeneracy of the ground state in the even and the odd case substantially differ, being respectively 2 and 2N, with N the number of spins; the spin of the most favorable kink states changes at that point.

Analytical solutions of inhomogeneous transverse field Ising models

Abhijit P. Chaudhari, Rajeev Singh, S. K. Mishra

The inhomogeneous transverse field Ising models mainly impurity based and the joint chain are analysed analytically using Jordan-Wigner transformations. The effects of inhomogeneities on the phase transition have been discussed in detail. We constructed an ansatz to diagonalize the two models which are taken into consideration. The inhomogeneity is quantified by a coupling parameter, which can be tuned to control the occurrence of quantum phase transition in these models. We have shown a systematic setup using which we can generalise the solution to a system with an arbitrary number of impurity sites and junctions, which are separated by at least two lattice sites. We have analysed the quantum critical point by calculating the correlation functions, transverse magnetization and the gap between the ground state and the first excited state.

Critical behavior of random transverse-field Ising spin chains

Daniel S. Fisher

A real-space renormalization-group treatment of random transverse-field Ising spin chains that was introduced previously is developed and extensively analyzed. It yields results that are asymptotically exact in the critical region near the zero-temperature para-to-ferromagnetic quantum phase transition. In particular, the exact scaling function is obtained for the magnetization as a function of a uniform applied magnetic field and the distance to the critical point, and up to the solution of a linear ordinary differential equation whose solution can be exhaustively analyzed, the scaling function of the average spin-spin correlation function is also obtained. Thus more exact information is obtainable about the critical behavior for this random model than is known for the pure version which is equivalent to the two-dimensional Ising model. The basic reason for this is the extremely broad distribution of energy scales that occurs at low energies near the critical point of the random system. For the random chain the distribution of the magnetization of the first spin in a semi-infinite system is also studied and the results found to agree in the scaling limit with results of McCoy obtained from the exact solution of the closely related McCoy-Wu Ising model; this provides strong justification for the validity of the present approach. The singular properties of the weakly ordered and weakly disordered ``Griffiths' phases'' that occur at zero temperature near the critical point are also studied, as well as the behavior at low but nonzero temperature. Possible extensions of the results and general lessons drawn from them for other random systems are briefly discussed.

Quantum Ising Quasi-Crystal

Vincenzo Gino Benza

A quantum Ising spin chain with two-valued nearest-neighbour couplings arranged in a quasi-periodic sequence is considered, in the presence of a uniform transverse field. The scaling properties of the energy spectrum of the model are analytically determined. The system can undergo a phase transition both when the two couplings have equal sign (ferro- or antiferromagnetic couplings) and when they have opposite sign (frustrated system). The critical point is explicitly obtained; the critical behaviour is shown to be the same as in the periodic case.
