Abstract

The proposed 1 × 8 and 8 × 1 all-optical controllable switch arrays can switch an optical pulse from an input port to one of eight output ports or from one of the eight input ports to only one output port. Where, the switching wavelength can be controlled by control fields to use for different optical pulses. In this paper dipole induced transparency (DIT) effect is used in photonic crystal quantum electrodynamics (PC-QED) cavity doped with a type three-level nano crystal as an all-optical switch.

Proposal for all-optical controllable double state switch using dipole induced transparency (DIT)

Karim Abbasian, K. Eftekhari, Ali Rostami +1 more

In this work, we propose an all-optical controllable double state switch using the dipole induced transparency effect applied on multilevel nanocrystal doped to photonic crystal (PC) cavity. Using the proposed structure, with applying one control field the absorbing medium converted to transparent one and switching operation is obtained and then applying the second control field changes the transparent PC cavity to opaque one again. Analytical relation for the proposed switch is presented and studied by investigation of effects of parameters on switching characteristics.

All-optical switching by entangling quantum dot states in a photonic crystal cavity

Gianluca Manzacca, Kurt Hingerl, Gabriella Cincotti

We analyze the behaviour of a quantum dot embedded in a photonic crystal add-drop filter and in a direct coupled photonic crystal microcavity for optical signal processing applications. The joint effect of dipole induced transparency and electromagnetic induced transparency, considering a cascade configuration of the quantum dot, are used to modify the behaviour of the whole system. The mathematical model and a number of different conditions for tuning the frequency response of the filters are derived for application in all-optical switching and wavelength tunable devices.

All-optical switching based on the electromagnetically induced transparency effect of an active photonic crystal microcavity

Y. He, T. Wang, Wei Yan +4 more

We report a new all-optical switching in a two-dimensional photonic crystal microcavity made of semiconductor multiple quantum wells and realized based on the electromagnetically induced transparency effect with exciton and two-exciton energy levels. We use the quantum coherence effects to achieve small absorption of the probe field, and the absorption of the probe field can be adjusted by controlling the pump field and decay rate. We turn the control field into pulses of light field so that we can regulate the efficiency of the switch. Through selecting the appropriate control light field intensity, we can obtain a switching efficiency of 85% and a switching time is 10 ps. This result can be used for the development of new types of nanoelectronic devices for realizing the switching process.

Controlling photon absorption in photonic nanowires via dipole–dipole interaction

Mahi R. Singh

The effect of the dipole-dipole interaction (DDI) on absorption processes has been investigated in photonic nanowires. They are manufactured by embedding a photonic crystal into another crystal. The embedded crystal is doped with an ensemble of three-level quantum dots. A probe field is applied to monitor the absorption coefficient. A control field is applied to induce dipole moments in quantum dots. Owing to these fields dipoles are induced in quantum dots, and they interact with each other via the DDI. Quantum dots also interact with bound photon states of the nanowire via the electron-bound photon interaction. It is found that the system can be switched from a transparent state to an absorbing state through the DDI. The switching mechanism can be controlled by changing the location of a resonant energy in the quantum dots.
