Rise and Fall of Pseudogaps Throughout the Two-Band BCS-BEC Crossover

Abstract

We demonstrate the rise-and-fall of multiple pseudogaps in the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer-Bose-Einstein-condensation (BCS-BEC) crossover in two-band fermionic systems having different pairing strengths in the deep band and in the shallow band. The striking features of this phenomenon are an unusual many-body screening of pseudogap state and the importance of pair-exchange couplings, which induces multiple pseudogap formation in the two bands. The multi-band configuration suppresses pairing fluctuations and the pseudogap opening in the strongly-interacting shallow band at small pair-exchange couplings by screening effects, with possible connection to the pseudogap phenomenology in iron based superconductors. On the other hand, the multiple pseudogap mechanism accompanies with the emergence of binary preformed Cooper pairs originating from interplay between intra-band and pair-exchange couplings.

Hidden Pseudogap and Excitation Spectra in a Strongly Coupled Two-Band Superfluid/Superconductor

Hiroyuki Tajima, Pierbiagio Pieri, Andrea Perali

We investigate single-particle excitation properties in the normal state of a two-band superconductor or superfluid throughout the Bardeen–Cooper–Schrieffer (BCS) to Bose–Einstein-condensation (BEC) crossover, within the many-body T-matrix approximation for multichannel pairing fluctuations. We address the single-particle density of states and the spectral functions consisting of two contributions associated with a weakly interacting deep band and a strongly interacting shallow band, relevant for iron-based multiband superconductors and multicomponent fermionic superfluids. We show how the pseudogap state in the shallow band is hidden by the deep band contribution throughout the two-band BCS-BEC crossover. Our results could explain the missing pseudogap in recent scanning tunneling microscopy experiments in FeSe superconductors.

BCS-BEC Crossover and Pairing Fluctuations in a Two Band Superfluid/Superconductor: A T Matrix Approach

Hiroyuki Tajima, Andrea Perali, Pierbiagio Pieri

We investigate pairing fluctuation effects in a two band fermionic system, where a shallow band in the Bardeen–Cooper–Schrieffer–Bose–Einstein condensation (BCS-BEC) crossover regime is coupled with a weakly interacting deep band. Within a diagrammatic T matrix approach, we report how thermodynamic quantities such as the critical temperature, chemical potential, and momentum distributions undergo the crossover from the BCS to BEC regime by tuning the intraband coupling in the shallow band. We also generalize the definition of Tan’s contact to a two band system and report the two contacts for different pair-exchange couplings. The present results are compared with those obtained by the simpler Nozières–Schmitt–Rink approximation. We confirm a pronounced enhancement of the critical temperature due to the multiband configuration, as well as to the pair-exchange coupling.

Enhanced critical temperature, pairing fluctuation effects, and BCS-BEC crossover in a two-band Fermi gas

Hiroyuki Tajima, Yuriy Yerin, Andrea Perali +1 more

We study the superfluid critical temperature in a two-band attractive Fermi system with strong pairing fluctuations associated with both interband and intraband couplings. We focus specifically on a configuration where the intraband coupling is varied from weak to strong in a shallow band coupled to a weakly interacting deeper band. The whole crossover from the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) condensation of largely overlapping Cooper pairs to the Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of tightly bound molecules is covered by our analysis, which is based on the extension of the Nozi\`eres-Schmitt-Rink approach to a two-band system. In comparison with the single-band case, we find a strong enhancement of the critical temperature, a significant reduction of the preformed pair region where pseudogap effects are expected, and the entanglement of two kinds of composite bosons in the strong-coupling BEC regime.

Pseudogap formation in organic superconductors

Shusaku Imajo, Takuya Kobayashi, Y. Matsumura +4 more

The condensation of paired fermions into superfluid states changes progressively depending on the coupling strength. At the midpoint of the crossover between Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) weak-coupling and Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) strong-coupling limits, paired fermions condensate most robustly, thereby leading to the emergence of a pseudogap due to enhanced pairing fluctuations. In the case of electrons in solids, excessively strong interactions often induce competing electronic orders instead of strong-coupling superconductivity, and experimental comprehension of the pseudogap remains incomplete. In this study, we provide experimental evidence demonstrating the opening of a pseudogap, marking the incipient stage of the BCS-BEC crossover in the organic system $\ensuremath{\kappa}\text{\ensuremath{-}}(\mathrm{BEDT}\text{\ensuremath{-}}{\mathrm{TTF})}_{2}X$. By controlling electron correlations, we investigate the thermodynamic properties of the BCS-BEC crossover and pseudogap phase. Since the superconductivity of $\ensuremath{\kappa}\text{\ensuremath{-}}{(\text{BEDT}\text{\ensuremath{-}}\mathrm{TTF})}_{2}X$ arises from a simple Fermi liquid that does not exhibit any other electronic orders, our study sheds light on the inherent nature of the BCS-BEC crossover.

BCS-BEC crossover in a two-band superconductor with odd-parity hybridization

G. N. Bremm, M. A. Contínentino, Tobias Micklitz

We study the crossover from the weak coupling Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) state to Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) at strong coupling in a two-band superconductor with orbitals of opposite parity coexisting at a common Fermi surface in the metallic state. In such systems hybridization can play a role similar to spin-orbit interaction in fermionic spinor gases, enhancing interband pairing and opening the possibility for driving the BCS-BEC crossover. Building on a mean-field analysis, we investigate the BCS-BEC crossover induced by a variation of the hybridization strength. We show that the relevant scale for the crossover depends strongly on the ratio of effective masses, with the crossover favored in systems with one dispersive and one flat band. Including the effect of thermal pair fluctuations in a one-loop approximation, we calculate the dependence of the critical temperature on the microscopic parameters in the strong coupling regime.
