Abstract

In this paper, we shall establish the connection between the group theory and quantum mechanics by showing how the group theory helps us to construct the spin operators. We look to the group generators SU (3). From these generators, new spin 1 operators will be constructed. These operators S-x, S-y and S-z satisfy all the properties of Pauli spin operators S-x, S-y and S-z. We shall discuss the notion of spin squeezing and correlations for pure spin 1 system using our spin operators S-x, S-y and S-z.

Generalization of Spin Operators

Moeen Kh. Srour, Munther T. Al-Mokayed, Abdalkarim N. Sahmoud +1 more

The study shall look to the group of generators SU(4). From these generators, a new group spin operator will be constructed. We will classify these groups into right handed groups and left handed groups. These two groups will satisfy all the properties of Pauli spin operators Sx, Sy and Sz with respect to the frame xyz. The analysis shows that the number of groups spin operators depends on the order of the group. This leads us to construct the theorem which defines the number of the groups spin operators. The analysis also leads to two kinds of frames: left handed frame (LHF) and right handed frame (RHF). The right handed operators will act on the RHF, and left hand operators act on the LHF. The study shall discuss the notion of spin squeezing for pure spin 3/2 system by using our new frames and new spin operators. It will show that our calculation is equivalent to the calculation by using Pauli spin operators.

Classification of spin-nematic squeezing in spin-1 collective atomic systems

Emi Yukawa, Masahito Ueda, Kae Nemoto

In spin-1 collective atomic systems, the spin and nematic-tensor operators constitute the su(3) Lie algebra, whose su(2) subalgebras are shown to give two distinct classes of squeezing which are unitarily equivalent to spin squeezing and spin-nematic squeezing. We explicitly construct a unitary operator that generates an arbitrary squeezed spin-nematic state from an arbitrary spin-1 condensate state. In particular, we demonstrate that squeezed spin states can be generated from a polar state and that squeezed spin-nematic states can be generated from a fully spin-polarized state.

SU(1, 1) squeezed state

Yixiao Huang, Heng-Na Xiong, Wei Zhong +2 more

Abstract SU(1, 1) coherent and squeezed states have been widely studied in optical, hybrid atom–light, and spinor Bose–Einstein condensate experiments. Traditionally, the definition of SU(1, 1) squeezing refers to the uncertainty relationship, which implies that the SU(1, 1) coherent state is already squeezed if it is placed in an appropriate system of coordinates. In this report we investigate the basic concept of SU(1, 1) squeezing and discuss the principle for the generation of squeezed states. We establish a new definition of the squeezing criterion for the SU(1, 1) states. We study the dynamical properties in an atom–molecule system and show that the SU(1, 1) squeezed state can be generated with a nonlinear atomic interaction, which is similar to the one-axis twisting mechanism in spin squeezing. We also discuss the effect of the atomic number on squeezing, and show that the optimal squeezing and optimal squeezing angle exhibit a sudden transition at a fixed atomic number value.

The non-relativistic nature of spin in quantum mechanics: a historical and pedagogical perspective

Marco Giliberti, Luisa Lovisetti

Abstract Conventional methods for teaching spin at a university level generally follow four main approaches. The first introduces spin into the Schrödinger equation artificially, leaving its physical meaning unclear. The second connects spin to the representation of the rotation group, which clarifies its nature but requires knowledge of group theory. The third approach derives from field theory, separating angular momentum into orbital and intrinsic parts, the latter corresponding to spin; however, this cannot be done within quantum mechanics alone. The fourth derives electron spin from Dirac’s 1928 relativistic equation, which, though correct, has led to the misconception that spin is a purely relativistic effect. A detailed analysis of Dirac’s 1928 papers shows that the concept of spin arises from the need to construct an equation linear in both energy and momentum to preserve Born’s probabilistic interpretation. This linearization of the Klein–Gordon equation reveals that spin is conceptually independent of relativity. Historical and pedagogical perspectives can together clarify conceptual difficulties and promote a deeper understanding of fundamental ideas in physics. Drawing on selected passages from Dirac’s original work, the present discussion offers broader conceptual and cultural considerations that introduce the notion of spin with limited mathematical requirements and can be applied independently of the didactic approach adopted.

Canonical Transformations and Squeezing in Quantum Mechanics

José M. Cerveró, Rodriguez-Gonzalez, A.

In this Paper we present an approach to Quantum Mechanical Canonical Transformations. Our main result is that Time Dependent Quantum Canonical Transformations can always be cast in the form of Squeezing Operators. We revise the main properties of these operators in regard to its Lie group properties, how two of them can be combined to yield another operator of the same class and how can also be decomposed and fragmented. In the second part of the paper we show how this procedure works extremely well for the Time Dependent Quantum Harmonic Oscillator. The issue of the systematic construction of Quantum Canonical Transformations is also discussed along the lines of Dirac, Wigner and Schwinger ideas and to the more recent work by Lee. The main conclusion is that the Classical Phase Space Transformation can be maintained in the operator formalism but the construction of the Quantum Canonical Transformation is not clearly related to the Classical Generating Function of a Classical Canonical Transformation. We propose the road of Squeezing Operators rather than the old one attached to Quantum Operators constructed under the guideline of the exponential of the Classical Generating Function.

Bose Description of Pauli Spin Operators and Related Coherent States

Nian-Quan Jiang, Fan Hong‐Yi, Lu Hai-Liang

Using both the fermionic-like and the bosonic-like properties of the Pauli spin operators σ + , σ − , and σ z we discuss the derivation of Bose description of the Pauli spin operators originally proposed by Shigefumi Naka, and deduce another new bosonic representation of Pauli operators. The related coherent states, which are nonlinear coherent state and coherent spin states for two spins, respectively, are constructed.
