Collisional m(J) mixing in magnetically oriented 4(2)P(3/2) potassium atoms.

T. Shiner

The mj mixing cross section for disorientation of magnetically 2 oriented potassium atoms in the 4 ^2/2 state» induced by collisions with ground state helium atoms, was measured using a modified Zeeman scanning technique. The mj substates of potassium atoms, situated in a strong magnetic field, were selectively excited and the collisionally induced mixing manifested itself by the depolarization of the potassium resonance fluorescence. The depolarization measurements yielded mixing cross -14 2 -14 2 sections ranging from 0.77 x 10 cm to 1.4 x 10 cm .It is felt that this discrepancy may be due to a selection rule for transitions between the fine structure states such that £nij = 0 is preferred.

Coherent effects in He I under laser interaction

Emilia A. Alipieva, S.I. Karabasheva, Elena T. Taskova

Summary form only given. The resonance laser interaction with an atomic system with degenerate levels creates coherent properties in the medium. Depending on the laser polarization and the experimental geometry it could be alignment, orientation or optical pumping. This coherence could be destroyed by application of a magnetic field, which removes the level degeneracy. This process has an effect on the optical characteristics of the medium, such as absorption and fluorescence from the levels involved. They show the resonance dependence on the applied magnetic field with widths, depending on /spl gamma//sub a/, /spl gamma//sub b/, and /spl gamma//sub ab/, where /spl gamma//sub I/ is the width of the upper or lower state of the transition, resonant to the laser beam, /spl gamma//sub ab/ is the width of the optical transition a/spl rarr/b. Using different experimental geometry, /spl gamma//sub a/, /spl gamma//sub b/, and /spl gamma//sub ab/ could be measured, as well as some rate constants of these levels. We investigated the coherent properties of the 2/sup 3/ P/spl rarr/3/sup 3/ D transition of He I under resonant laser radiation. Due to the peculiarities of the coherent signals, registered in the lateral and forward direction the cross-section for velocity selective collisions for the 3/sup 3/ D He I level were obtained. The influence of the strong laser field on the widths and shapes of the signals was determined. The cross-section, for depolarizing collisions of the 3/sup 3/ D level was measured, too.

Disorientation of 42P1/2 potassium atoms, induced in resonant collisions

P. Skalinski, L. Krause

A (modified) Zeeman scanning method was used to determine the cross sections for disorientation of potassium atoms in the 42P1/2 resonance substate, induced in collisions with the ground-state atoms. Potassium vapor at densities of the order of 1011 cm−3 placed in a variable magnetic field was irradiated with σ+ polarized resonance radiation of wavelength 7699 Å emitted from a discharge lamp located in a constant field of 5.4 kG. The σ+ and σ− components of the resonance fluorescence emitted at right angles to the direction of excitation were monitored in relation to the vapor density as the variable field was scanned to make the σ+ resonance transition in the absorbing vapor coincide with the σ+ component present in the exciting light. As the vapor density increased, so did the admixture of the σ− component in the fluorescent light, which arises from collisional mixing between the mJ = 1/2 and mJ = −1/2 Zeeman substates. The resulting depolarization curve yielded the disorientation cross section σ1 = 4.0 × 10−11 cm2.
