Local field effects in multicomponent media

Michael E. Crenshaw, Charles M. Bowden

At densities that are typical of condensed matter, a propagating electromagnetic field mediates interactions between polarizable constituents of a material in what is known as the local-field effect. Previous investigations of the local-field effect have been limited to a single polarizable component of a nonlinear material. For multicomponent media, we have found that the interaction of laser radiation with an optically nonlinear component of condensed matter is fundamentally altered by the presence of another polarizable component as a result of the local-field effect. Novel effects include local-field enhancement effects, local cooperative decays, and coherence transfer and coherence exchange processes.© (1997) COPYRIGHT SPIE--The International Society for Optical Engineering. Nonlinear optical effects on the atom–field interaction based on the nonlinear coherent states approach

Mojgan Momeni-Demneh, Ali Mahdifar, R. Roknizadeh

In this paper, to study the effects of a nonlinear medium on the atom–field interaction, we use the nonlinear coherent states approach. For this purpose, we choose the two-mode cross-Kerr as our nonlinear optical phenomena, and with the use of its algebra, we show that it can be considered as a deformed oscillator as well as a deformed su(2) algebra. Then we construct the associated two-mode nonlinear coherent states and investigate their statistical properties. After that, as an example of applicability of the constructed coherent states, we investigate the nonlinear effects of the medium on the dynamics of atom–field interaction within the framework of the coherent states. By using the time-dependent Schrödinger equation, we study the effect of the nonlinear medium on the occupation probabilities of the atomic levels and consider the relation between the revival time of the atomic occupation probabilities and the nonlinear parameter of the medium. Then, to study the nonlinear effects on the dynamical properties of the cavity field, we consider the photon distribution, correlation function, Mandel parameters of the field, von Neumann entropy, and also the squeezing. Particularly, the nonlinearity of the media on the nonclassical properties of the two modes is clarified.

Ultraslow Group Velocity and Enhanced Nonlinear Optical Effects in a Coherently Driven Hot Atomic Gas

Michael M. Kash, Vladimir A. Sautenkov, Alexander S. Zibrov +6 more

We report the observation of small group velocities of order 90 m/s and large group delays of greater than 0.26 ms, in an optically dense hot rubidium gas ( $\ensuremath{\approx}360\mathrm{K}$). Media of this kind yield strong nonlinear interactions between very weak optical fields and very sharp spectral features. The result is in agreement with previous studies on nonlinear spectroscopy of dense coherent media.
